The shop stands where a cooper’s yard once met the old smithy, and the two businesses were joined when their owners’ heirs combined the properties. The faded sign still shows a barrel stave crossed with a hammer. The forge breathes heat through the open front, and every surface carries a fine film of soot. The owner, Varka, is a broad-shouldered dwarf with a clipped beard and a precise, unhurried manner. She checks every edge with her thumb, refuses to sell a blade she considers poorly balanced, and keeps a battered shield beside the back door. An apprentice works the bellows and sweeps the floor, while the shop’s hanging ironwork clinks whenever someone enters.

The shop’s valuables are split between the till beneath the counter and a locked chest under the smith’s workbench. The cramped rear room doubles as the owner’s office and has a bell line tied to its door.

Security check: DC 13Dexterity (Stealth) to enter unnoticed; Dexterity (Thieves’ Tools) to open the locked drawer or chest
If they fail: A slipped tool rings against the forge or a tripwire rattles the bell above the back door. The apprentice calls for help while the smith blocks the front exit with a barred shield rack. If the party is caught, the town watch is summoned and the shopkeeper demands restitution before considering any apology.
