Your walking speed is 30 feet. Choose Small or Medium when you create your character; this choice reflects your individual build, not a separate people.
Your sensory vanes detect subtle shifts in air and motion. You have an edge when trying to notice an approaching creature in a quiet environment, provided you are not deafened or overwhelmed by strong winds or noise.
When you fall, you can spread your flank membranes to steer. Once between rests, you may reduce damage from a fall and move a short distance horizontally as you descend, at the guide’s discretion. This does not let you fly or hover.
You can produce a brief pattern of clicks, colors, and gestures understood by other Veyri. With a willing creature that can see or hear you, you can communicate a simple emotional impression or warning even when you share no language.
Veyri, One local language
Veyri often develop strong endurance and alert, pattern-reading minds, but their varied lives produce no single physical or mental mold. Use whatever ability tendencies suit your character; no scores are fixed by ancestry.
Long, narrow vanes and a light frame suited to thin air.
Raised among wind-scoured plateaus and lofty settlements, Highwind Veyri are practiced at reading weather and navigating exposed terrain.
Veyri are travelers from another world, keen-eyed beast-folk whose sensory vanes read the air and whose family songs preserve routes across generations. They have made homes in strange lands without forgetting that every horizon is an invitation. A Veyri adventurer might be a scout seeking a safe road home, a curious envoy studying local customs, or simply someone who found that the next wonder was worth following.
Veyri are upright, warm-blooded beast-folk whose alien lineage shows in the fine sensory vanes framing their heads and shoulders.
Their faces combine a short muzzle, wide-set eyes, and a flexible mouth. Soft fur or close plumage covers the body, with longer patterned fibers along the neck, forearms, and tail. Membranous panels between the arms and flanks help them steer a fall, but do not allow powered flight. Their vanes flush with color and shift subtly with mood, temperature, and nearby motion. Individuals range from small and light-framed to tall and broad, and their colors run from dusky umber and silver to vivid blue-green.
Otherworldly; found in scattered enclaves on unfamiliar worlds, especially in highlands, open plains, and places with clear views of the sky.
Newly emerged from a leathery egg, a hatchling relies on kin to learn the calls and scents of its surroundings.
A young Veyri begins exploring beyond the family circle and chooses a personal name after a formative discovery.
An adult takes on communal responsibilities, though many leave their kin to seek knowledge or a new home.
An elder’s membranes lose some of their vivid color, while their memory of migrations and old sky-cycles becomes a treasured resource.
Veyri communities form around clutches, groups of hatchlings raised by relatives and chosen caretakers.
Their oldest traditions are carried in call-and-response songs that encode migration routes, warnings, and family histories. A person’s name may change after a defining journey, and sharing a trusted route is considered a serious act of generosity. Veyri are not naturally nomadic in every culture, but many feel a strong pull toward discovery and exchange.
Veyri traditions honor the cycles of migration, the bonds between generations, and the unknowable forces that carry life between worlds.
Some interpret these as ancestral spirits, others as natural laws or distant powers. No alignment is typical. Their communities prize mutual care, but individuals differ widely in how they balance loyalty, freedom, and duty.
Veyri tend to approach new peoples with careful curiosity, observing gestures and routines before deciding what is polite.
They value hospitality and reciprocal help, but do not assume that every culture shares their definition of kin. Their unusual appearance can attract curiosity, suspicion, or unwanted attention, and many become skilled at setting boundaries without turning every misunderstanding into a quarrel.
Veyri settlements are built to be read from the air as well as from the ground.
Their domed halls gather warmth, while open courtyards, wind-bells, and colored roof panels help travelers orient themselves. On worlds unlike their birthplace, they favor adaptable shelters assembled from local materials and arranged around shared gathering spaces.
