The Low Red Steps
The Low Red Steps began as a chandlery's supper room, built beside a set of brick steps that stained the harbor water red with dust after heavy rain. When the chandlery failed, its cook kept the doors open and began serving crews waiting for their ships to unload. The place has since changed hands twice, but the steps remain, worn smooth by generations of boots and crates.

Quirks
The floor slopes slightly toward the harbor, so loose dice roll seaward unless guests wedge them with bread crusts. The speaking tube in the Chart Nook carries kitchen orders clearly, but occasionally returns a whispered phrase nobody remembers saying. On exceptionally high tides, the red steps glimmer as if damp even when they are dry.
Rooms and services6
- Tide StepsDock accessA narrow covered landing lets crews come ashore at most tides. At low tide, guests use the broad stone steps that give the pub its name.
- Crew RoomsLodgingSix plain rooms with sea chests, shutters, and sturdy bolts. The upper rooms are quieter, though none are entirely free of harbor noise.
- Harbor YardStableA fenced yard with a roofed rack for drying tack and tarpaulins. It has space for pack animals, but not enough depth for a cart.
- The Chart NookPrivate diningA curtained alcove with a scarred table, two chairs, and a speaking tube that carries orders to the kitchen. The tube also carries gossip.
- Sailor's TablesGamblingA pair of tables host dice and cards after supper. The house takes no cut, but the keeper will stop play if tempers turn into drawn steel.
- The BoardsPerformance spaceA low platform by the western wall serves for sea shanties, traveling storytellers, and announcements from ship crews seeking hands.

Intrigue
What locals say
The Low Red Steps is a working dockside pub rather than a haven for grand adventurers. Sailors, porters, fishers, and ship's officers share its benches, and news travels quickly from its tables to the wharves. Its keeper buys fresh catch from local boats and keeps a few basic supplies for travelers. Custom feature: the old brick steps sometimes seem to hold a little warmth after sunset, even in cold weather; locals blame the kiln that once stood nearby.
