The High Mooring - AI-generated fantasy Tavern

The High Mooring

The High Mooring began as a ferry warehouse beside Meridian's harbor. The ferry trade dwindled, and the building was converted into a tavern rather than dismantled. Its name is a boast from the warehouse years: the old loading beams once held goods high above floodwater, though the tavern floor now slopes toward a perpetually troublesome drain. The tables bear generations of knife-game marks, some carefully repaired and most not.

Overview

History

The High Mooring began as a ferry warehouse beside Meridian's harbor. The ferry trade dwindled, and the building was converted into a tavern rather than dismantled. Its name is a boast from the warehouse years: the old loading beams once held goods high above floodwater, though the tavern floor now slopes toward a perpetually troublesome drain. The tables bear generations of knife-game marks, some carefully repaired and most not.

Quirks

The floor slopes toward a drain that works only when someone is singing. The regulars have developed a repertoire of work songs, drinking songs, and deliberately terrible ballads to keep puddles from spreading. When the singing stops, the water gathers around the legs of the knife-game tables. A loose loading ring in the wall also gives a hollow clang whenever a large wave strikes the harbor pilings.

What locals say

Meridian is a harbor settlement where ferries, coastal traders, and inland traffic meet. The High Mooring serves that constant turnover: sailors after a hot meal, teamsters waiting on cargo, and travelers looking for news. Its old warehouse fittings remain in place, including heavy beams, iron rings, and a broad loading door that opens toward the water. The tavern's customs and details are local creations, not claims of setting canon.

Plot hooks

3
1The strange clipped coins have begun turning up in the pockets of different patrons. The party can trace the marks to a chest recently brought ashore, but the stranger watching the coins may try to claim it first.
2After a heavy rain, the drain refuses to clear even when the patrons sing. Something solid is lodged beneath the floor, and its muffled knocks seem to answer certain songs.
3A courier asks the party to escort a sealed ledger to a ship before dawn. The ledger lists cargo that officially never passed through Meridian, and at least one name in it belongs to a regular at the tavern.
