When you or a creature you can see within 30 feet makes an ability check or saving throw to navigate, avoid a hazard, or resist being moved, you can expend one Bearing to add your Trail Die, a d6, to the roll; you can do so after seeing the d20 but before the outcome is announced.

Playing one
What it is
Pathwardens turn knowledge of terrain, timing, and human movement into a martial art.
They guide allies through danger, expose weak approaches, and make seemingly impossible routes usable. A Pathwarden is a mobile combatant and practical support specialist, less focused on raw damage than a Fighter and less dependent on magic than a Ranger.
How to play one
Stay mobile and keep allies within reach.
Use Bearings when a crucial roll or an ally's survival is at stake, and remember that your movement and positioning can prevent trouble as effectively as damage can. You are at your best when you anticipate danger and help the whole group respond together.

In the world
Training
Most Pathwardens begin as scouts, caravan guards, wilderness guides, or soldiers.
A mentor teaches them to read terrain, anticipate how people move through it, and guide others under pressure; initiation often requires leading a real group through a dangerous passage without abandoning anyone.
How others see them
Travelers often regard Pathwardens as reassuring necessities, while rulers and generals prize or fear their ability to make a route safe—or to reveal how it can be attacked.
In isolated communities, one may be welcomed as a rescuer or suspected of scouting for outsiders.
Famous practitioners
PathwardenSella VennA veteran guide credited with leading three rival armies through a blizzard without losing a single civilian.
PathwardenOrik of the Nine BridgesA quiet pathfinder whose hand-drawn maps are prized for showing where a journey is likely to go wrong.
Factions
The Open Mile
A loose network of guides who publish safe routes and escort displaced communities without demanding allegiance.
The Brass Compass
A mercenary surveyors' society that sells military route intelligence and trains its members to protect valuable clients.
Keepers of the Last Road
A secluded fellowship that preserves routes to fragile or dangerous places, sharing them only with trusted travelers.
Regions
The High Switchbacks
Mountain passes and high plateaus, where a mistaken turn can strand a caravan for weeks.
The Thousand Reaches
Floodplains and braided rivers where channels shift, bridges vanish, and local knowledge is essential.
The Far Marches
Frontier roads connecting isolated towns, where Pathwardens are valued as guides and watched as potential spies.
Character hooks
You charted a safe road through a deadly wilderness, but the people who followed it vanished.
Your former company sold a route to an occupying army, and you are hunting down every copy of the map.
A natural disaster destroyed your home. You now guide refugees toward a place where they can begin again.
You inherited a map whose roads shift whenever someone lies about their destination.
A ruler hired you to find a pass that your order deliberately erased from its records.
