Rocc and Elara Meet Over the Stolen Ledger
Read Aloud
Rain drums on the ferry roof as Rocc reaches the landing from one side and Elara steps out of the harbormaster's office from the other. Both stop when they see the other holding the same sealed ledger. The river gate groans behind them, and neither has time for a second meeting.
The Scene
NEUTRALNegotiation under pressureBase DC 4Stakes The ledger can break a powerful ferry monopoly, but only if Rocc and Elara stop treating each other as the enemy.
20 to 30 minutes
NPC Goal
Rocc wants the ledger intact and wants to learn whether Elara is a witness, a thief, or bait.
Leverage
The ledger proves both parties were deceived, but each knows only half the truth.
Player Approaches
- Offer the ledger for public release instead of private payment.
- Name the person who hired Rocc.
- Show proof that the ferry company caused the shortages.
- Use the river gate or ferry horn to delay the waiting contact.
- Admit one secret before demanding the other person's trust.
NPC Gambits
- Trade one page of the ledger for one answer.
- Separate the two parties by taking one speaker onto the winch platform.
- Force a choice: save the landing from flooding or protect the ledger.
- Call for a witness before the contact arrives.
- Promise a shared escape route, then test whether the promise is kept.
NPC Reactions
- Rocc answers practical questions but refuses names until someone risks something first.
- Elara jokes when frightened, then becomes blunt when accused of selling out the river towns.
- A sincere admission earns one immediate success.
- A threat makes the speaker lose the next opportunity to ask a question.
- Protecting bystanders shifts the next reaction one step toward FRIENDLY.
