At the table

Voice

Her voice is dry-edged and steady, shaped by years of projecting over forge noise, road wind, and courtroom murmurs. A slight rasp catches on long sentences, but her consonants remain crisp. When angry, she speaks more plainly and directly, not more softly; when moved, she pauses to find exact words rather than reaching for grand ones.

She speaks in carefully separated clauses, as if every statement might later be entered into testimony. Her vocabulary blends courthouse procedure with theological language, and she often explains an idea by setting Mercy and Law beside one another. When tired, she drops formal phrasing and speaks in short, blunt sentences.

Speech patterns

Frames questions as distinctions: "What did you see, and what did you decide it meant?"
Uses the creation story to explain practical choices, especially the tension between mercy and law.
When frustrated, names the specific rule at issue instead of insulting the person who broke it.
Offers a person a clear chance to correct an account before she records it as a formal statement.

How to play them

She begins with courteous, direct questions and makes clear whether she is speaking personally or under church authority. She gives people room to correct themselves, records claims carefully, and is more receptive to concrete evidence than to appeals to rank. Treat Helman kindly and do not obstruct her investigation, and she is willing to share what she knows about church doctrine and local procedure. Threats against witnesses or attempts to conceal evidence end the informal conversation immediately.

Goal

Prove whether civic oaths are being unlawfully imposed on newcomers, protect those targeted by the inquiry, and force the church to correct any abuses without abandoning its promise of shared law.

Motivation

To make the church's teaching that Breath is Mercy and Flame is Law true in practice, even when doing so embarrasses the institution she serves.

Appearance

Skye is short and compact, with long brown hair usually braided tightly and looped through the back of her breastplate. Her narrow hazel eyes do not linger on faces; they travel to hands, doorways, windows, and the space behind a speaker, mapping exits and possible weapons before she answers. She moves with a deliberate, slightly stiff economy, as if every step has been measured against a rule. Her breastplate is polished but visibly worked, its gold emblem of a spear wrapped by three cords dulled where her thumb repeatedly rubs it. The impression she leaves is of a small, immovable checkpoint: not imposing by size, but difficult to pass without being examined. Unexpectedly, she carries a tiny bundle of dried wildflowers tucked inside her armor, replacing them whenever they crumble.

Clothing

A well-fitted breastplate marked in gold with the inquisitor squad's spear wrapped by three cords, over a dark, practical riding coat. Her gloves are repaired at the seams, her boots are caked with road dust, and a plain wool scarf protects her throat on cold rides.

Body language

She keeps her shoulders square and her weight planted, with one hand often resting near the whip's handle. While listening, her eyes make quiet circuits of the room instead of holding a speaker's gaze. She rubs the gold cords on her breastplate when uncertain, then catches herself and folds both hands behind her back.

Distinguishing features

Her eyes check hands, exits, and windows before settling on a face.
She unconsciously rubs the three gold cords on her breastplate when weighing a difficult choice.
She keeps brittle wildflowers inside her armor, an incongruous keepsake among official insignia and weapons.

Personality

15 traits and drives

Skye is rigorous but not naturally suspicious: she wants to believe people, then works hard to prove that belief safe. In a calm conversation she is patient and surprisingly open to questions about theology; when a witness is frightened she becomes gentler, but when an official stonewalls her she grows procedural and relentless. She can be compassionate toward individuals while defending rules that have harmed them, and she knows this contradiction is not resolved merely by good intentions.

Alignment
Lawful good, though she is increasingly troubled by the gap between law and justice.

Quirks

She touches the three gold cords on her breastplate before crossing a threshold, without noticing she does it.
She counts a room's exits on her fingers below the edge of a table.
She tucks wildflowers inside her armor and replaces them even when the old ones have become dust.
She asks Helman for his opinion in a low voice, then sometimes pauses as if considering his answer.
She turns a cup so its handle points toward the person she expects to speak next.

Habits

Before entering a room, she checks the threshold, then the hands of whoever is waiting inside.
When reading a religious text, she traces the margin with one finger as if following a road.
She talks to Helman while grooming him, especially when she is trying to decide whether to trust someone.
When forced to wait, she tests the buckle on her left gauntlet three times, then begins again if interrupted.

Traits · 4

She asks precise questions because she wants to understand, not because she enjoys catching people out.
She offers kindness in practical forms, such as arranging a safe ride or making sure a witness has eaten.
She is proud of her command of the creation story but welcomes thoughtful disagreement about its interpretation.
Under pressure, she becomes more formal and exacting, even with people she trusts.

Flaws · 4

Her low agility makes her slow to react to sudden physical danger and poor at escaping restraints.
She can turn careful verification into delay, even when someone needs immediate help.
She assumes that a well-structured argument deserves more time than an emotional appeal.
She takes responsibility for failures that belong to an entire institution.

Fears · 3

That she will mistake institutional authority for proof of righteousness again.
That Helman will be injured because she chose to stand her ground.
That the church's ideal of civic unity will be used to erase the people it claims to welcome.

Wants and needs · 4

A protected route for witnesses willing to speak against officials.
A fair hearing for the families affected by the disputed oaths.
Reliable records that cannot be quietly altered or destroyed.
Someone she trusts to challenge her conclusions without treating her as an enemy.

Combat

AC 13 · HP 38 · 30 ft.

Skye keeps Helman between herself and the most dangerous enemy, using the whip's reach to control space and pull a foe away from a vulnerable ally. She prefers to identify a combatant's purpose before committing a spell slot, then uses Divine Smite against a clear threat rather than as a display. She relies on her aura to steady companions and reserves healing for someone who would otherwise fall. She is a poor dodger, so she avoids precarious footing and refuses to make acrobatic leaps. If a fight can be ended by a clear order and a credible chance to surrender, she offers that before striking.

Background

Skye Dowe was raised among the crowded river wards of Cambridgere, where her mother, Nessa, repaired harness and her father, Geth, carried messages for the local courthouse. She learned the Accord of Breath and Flame by reciting it beside the forge, and became fascinated by the church's account of Arlyurl: Breath as Mercy, Flame as Law. At nineteen she joined the Divine Collegium in Newces, where master inquisitor Cormac Faoláin taught her how to investigate doctrinal disputes without confusing suspicion for proof. Her defining failure came during a dockside inquiry: she accepted a frightened witness's coerced testimony too quickly, and a family was driven from its home before the lie came to light. Since then, she has made herself slow to accuse, but her caution can become stubbornness. She was assigned to the Brasterdenese inquisitor squad and partnered with Helman, a bay warhorse she helped nurse through a fever. She now investigates reports that local officials are using divine law to force newcomers into unequal civic oaths. The evidence points toward a respected magistrate, but the magistrate's office has quietly restricted her access to records. Skye's mother still sends her bundles of tack-repair thread, and Cormac's terse letters remind her that a just inquiry must be willing to indict the institution conducting it.

Role in the story

A principled investigator who can become an ally, an obstacle, or a witness to the church's internal conflict. She offers access to doctrine and official procedure, but her investigation may put the party in danger if they uncover evidence before she can protect its source.
