Ruk Vae
Ruk Vae
At the table
“s conduct, she uses precise bureaucratic terms and avoids saying”
Voice
A clear, lightly rasped voice shaped by cold high-altitude air and years of projecting through lecture halls. Her breathing is usually controlled; when startled, two dry clicks interrupt it, and she has to restart her sentence. The name Ruk is short and blunt, with a hard initial consonant.
Her words have the crisp pacing of someone accustomed to lecturing over wind and rustling pages. She clips technical terms cleanly, but lets family names and personal questions take longer to leave her mouth. When rattled, her breath catches twice and she often begins her next sentence with a correction.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with useful information and sincere interest in the party's observations. She is especially attentive to anyone who has seen primal magic. If asked about the blocked letters, she admits what she knows, but first tries to learn whether the questioner will protect the message fragment and her family.
Goal
Find her parents, understand what they meant by 'the search,' and recover enough forbidden history to explain how Vamir's bow draws on primal Moonfire.
Motivation
She wants truth without turning her family into collateral damage, and still hopes the Academy can be made to repair its harm rather than simply destroyed.
Appearance
Vae looks composed until she moves: then the practiced stillness of a lecturer gives way to quick, angular steps, as if she is forever making room for an idea arriving late. Her hands are broad-palmed and stained at the fingertips with blue-black ink and powdered mica; fine calluses along her thumb and forefinger come from years of turning brittle pages, not swordwork. Her breath catches in two small, dry clicks when she is startled, an old habit from growing up in the thin air above High Garden. The unexpected detail is that she carries a tiny wooden spinning top and will set it whirring on a table while discussing dangerous magic.
Clothing
A deep moss-green scholar's coat with patched elbows, narrow sleeves, and a high collar sewn with tiny protective runes. A battered leather satchel crosses her chest; her cuffs are often dusted with chalk or mica.
Body language
She leans toward whoever is speaking, chin slightly raised, but her feet angle toward the nearest exit when a conversation turns institutional. When excited, she taps two ink-stained fingers against her palm as if counting invisible steps. Under sudden pressure, her breath catches in two dry clicks before she can speak.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 27 · 30 feetVae avoids trading blows. She opens with control magic, uses cover, and keeps a clear route to retreat. If Vamir or another companion is threatened, she becomes startlingly direct, spending her strongest spell to break the threat's position. She will not deliberately harm a creature that appears to be acting under primal influence.

Background
Vae grew up among the wind-cut terraces of High Garden, where her parents, a field naturalist and a wayfinder, taught her to read weather, plant growth, and old trails as carefully as books. She entered the Academy young and became one of its youngest Pro-arch Wizards, an honor she wears with genuine delight and private unease. Years ago, during a survey near a moonlit ravine, she watched her brother Vamir's bow flare with Moonfire. The light bent toward living roots rather than toward any arcane formula she knew. That discovery sent her into the Academy's sealed records. She found that the Beledron Conclave had forbidden references to primal tapping after the Suloise Cataclysm, leaving High Garden with no reliable account of how to access it. Now her parents have gone silent. A fragment of their last message mentions 'the search,' and Vae discovered the Academy had quietly blocked several of her letters. She is torn between protecting her brother and exposing the institution that made her career possible. Her former mentor, Shiori, insists the censorship was meant to prevent panic; Vae no longer knows whether that is a confession or a warning.
Role in the story
