At the table

Voice

A weathered, forward-thrown voice with a little rasp from years of calling across wet stone and wind. Her consonants are crisp enough to carry through a crowded passage, and she clips the ends of sentences when giving urgent instructions. When relaxed, her breath catches faintly on a laugh, like a reed rattling against glass.

She gives directions in clauses that sound like field instructions: identify the danger, name the route, then give the next action. Her humor is dry and often arrives as an afterthought. She uses precise phrases such as 'I saw' and 'I suspect' rather than claiming certainty she does not have.

Speech patterns

Gives directions in short, practical sequences: where to stand, what to carry, and when to move.
Uses water and weather as metaphors, but avoids grand mystical language.
When recalling an event, distinguishes carefully between what she saw, heard, and inferred.

How to play them

Saelith responds best to concrete plans, reliable signals, and people who help move civilians before debating blame. If the party has earned Sylvros's support, she treats them as capable allies but still asks them to verify the lower approach. If they have not, she offers directions and observations without claiming divine authority. She will share her testimony when convinced it will protect people rather than serve as a political weapon.

Goal

Keep the lower approach open long enough for the evacuation to pass, then bring the engineer's sister to safety without letting the leyline surge overtake the route.

Motivation

To turn hard-won knowledge into a safer passage for others, and to prove that a witness can admit uncertainty without being useless.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Saelith's long coat hangs a little too broadly at the shoulders, its hems patched in neat, visible squares of sailcloth. She moves with a careful side-step, as if every doorway might conceal a current. A bundle of thin reedglass tubes clicks softly at her belt; their cloudy interiors catch light like trapped river ice. She takes up more space than her slight frame suggests, planting herself across paths and speaking as though she expects to be obeyed. Unexpectedly, she keeps a tiny paper theater folded in her breast pocket and makes its cutout figures perform for frightened children.

Clothing

A weather-darkened, oversized river coat with carefully mended square patches, a high collar, and a faded blue scarf tied in a practical knot. Her boots are wrapped at the ankles with reed-fiber strips for grip. A small folded paper theater is protected in an oiled pocket.

Body language

She plants her feet across a route when she believes it is unsafe, shoulders angled like a human barricade. When listening, she leans toward the speaker but keeps her eyes on the nearest exit or waterline. Her hands are always busy: smoothing a map, testing a knot, or steadying a frightened person's elbow.

Distinguishing features

A bundle of cloudy reedglass tubes clicks softly against her belt when she walks.
Her coat is deliberately oversized and patched with tidy squares of mismatched sailcloth.
She carries a tiny paper theater and makes its cutout figures act out evacuation instructions for children.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Saelith is protective but not soft-spoken about danger: she will bark an order at a panicking crowd, then spend hours making sure the last child has dry socks. She distrusts confident assurances yet is quick to trust people who show their work. In calm moments she is wry and unexpectedly playful; under pressure she becomes rigid, exacting, and impatient with speculation.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Taps each reedglass tube against her thumb before entering a tunnel, as if asking it a question.
Names routes by the sound they make underfoot, such as 'the hollow stair' or 'the dry clack.'
Folds scraps of paper into tiny boats during tense conversations, then gives them to whoever is least able to sit still.
Counts people twice, once aloud and once silently, and insists the second count is the one that matters.

Habits

Counts heads whenever a group moves through a choke point.
Checks the nearest drain or channel before discussing any plan.
When anxious, touches the reedglass tubes in sequence, listening for a change in their clicks.

Traits · 3

Protective enough to put herself between danger and strangers, but uncomfortable accepting gratitude.
Skeptical of authority, yet capable of fierce loyalty to people who take responsibility.
Practical in a crisis, quietly playful when she has made sure everyone is safe.

Flaws · 3

Checks every claim against her own observations, even when there is no time.
Takes responsibility for routes and people she cannot realistically control.
Her blunt instructions can sound like accusations, especially when she is frightened.

Fears · 3

That a warning she gives too late will repeat the disaster that shaped her.
That Shesh will mistake her caution for cowardice and die trying to prove otherwise.
That the leyline surge will turn the lower approach into a channel before the last evacuees cross.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs enough time and willing hands to move the last evacuees out of the lower approach.
Wants Shesh to stop taking solo risks and come back within sight of the crossing.
Needs to know whether the leyline surge is following the natural channel or cutting across it.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Saelith is a noncombatant who prioritizes evacuation, cover, and escape routes. She uses Reedglass Surge to push danger away from a narrow passage or clear room for civilians, then retreats behind sturdier allies. She does not pursue fleeing enemies and will use her staff only to fend off an immediate attacker.

Custom feature. Tide-Caller. While standing within 30 feet of a connected natural watercourse, Saelith can use an action to redirect a surge of water into a 10-foot-wide channel she can see within 30 feet. The channel remains clear until the start of her next turn.
Custom feature. Reedglass Witness. Saelith can recall the sequence of events she personally observed with exceptional accuracy, including the order of spoken statements and visible actions.

Actions

Quarterstaff. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage. Saelith uses the staff defensively and avoids lethal blows whenever possible.
Reedglass Surge. Custom feature, 1/Day. Saelith calls a brief wall of water through a space she can see within 30 feet. Creatures in a 10-foot line must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet. The water then drains away. This is not a spell.

Reactions

Get Behind Me. When a creature Saelith can see within 5 feet is hit by an attack, she can use her reaction to shove that creature 5 feet toward cover or out of the attacker's immediate reach, if the destination is open. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks. Saelith must be able to move and the target must be willing.

Services they sell

Guides the party and evacuees through safe passages she has inspected.
Identifies likely changes in water pressure and flags unstable crossings.
Provides an eyewitness account, carefully separating observation from inference.

Rewards they can give

A reliable, annotated route through the lower approach.
Saelith's testimony about what she personally observed during the Shattering.
If the party earns her trust, access to her original sluice inquiry records.

Equipment

  • Walking staff (weapon)A plain ashwood staff with a flattened grip, used for balance on slick stone and as a last-resort weapon.
  • Reedglass tubes (tool)Hollow reeds sealed with cloudy glass at one end; used to test changes in pressure and water flow. Their responses are practical observations, not guaranteed magic.
  • Evacuation map (document)A grease-marked map of the lower approach, annotated with flood heights, weak bridges, and temporary shelter points.
  • Pocket paper theater (personal keepsake)A tiny theater of folded paper figures depicting boats, bridges, and flood channels.

Possessions

A flood-marked route map
Cloudy reedglass testing tubes
A pocket paper theater
The original signed testimony from the sluice inquiry, with one page concealed
A list of evacuees and their destination shelters

Background

Saelith was raised among the canal steps of Threshwater, where her family measured floods by the marks left on doorframes. She learned to read water from her aunt, an old Tide-Caller who taught that a current carries evidence as surely as a witness carries memory. At nineteen, Saelith guided a night evacuation during a sluice failure. She heard the warning bell, but believed the upstream gate was already open; dozens of people reached the lower crossing just as the water struck. She survived by hauling a child onto a roof and has never again trusted a signal she has not checked herself. Her testimony later exposed the engineer who had concealed the failing gate, but the inquiry was quietly buried. Now, during the Shattering at Dawn, she is trying to keep the lower approach passable while arranging safe passage for the same engineer's elderly sister, who lives in the evacuation district. She keeps contact with her former apprentice, Shesh, who sends route sketches from the far bank, and resents that Shesh has begun taking risks without her.

Role in the story

A local witness and Tide-Caller who organizes evacuation routes and works to keep the leyline surge from flooding the lower approach. If the party has earned Sylvros's support, she becomes a practical ally who can redirect water briefly and help civilians cross. She also offers an eyewitness account of the unfolding crisis and embodies the human cost of earlier failures.

From their background
Faction
Tide-Caller of Sylvros, when Sylvros's support has been earned; otherwise an independent local witness and evacuation guide.

Known connections

Shesh, her former apprentice, relays route sketches from across the lower canal and is increasingly reckless.
The elderly sister of the disgraced sluice engineer lives among the evacuees; Saelith has promised to get her out.
The engineer whose concealed negligence caused the old sluice disaster is alive, and Saelith still has the original testimony that helped prove it.
