Arch-Scribe Vhaelon
Arch-Scribe Vhaelon
At the table
Voice
A dry, slightly rasping voice shaped by dust, ink fumes, and years of dictating measurements in echoing service shafts. His consonants are crisp, his vowels plain, and technical terms come out with practiced precision. When impatient, he speeds up until his sentences sound like someone reading a warning label before the alarm sounds.
His speech is organized like a technical report: premise, evidence, consequence. He uses plain words for ordinary people and exact trade vocabulary for systems. Anger makes him faster and more blunt, with clipped corrections and abrupt questions, not softer or quieter. He often pauses midway through a sentence to revise a number aloud.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treats the party as intelligent opponents rather than villains. He will share evidence of the grid's abuses and negotiate for time, but refuses to surrender the failsafe key. If the party demonstrates a credible way to free natural magic without a catastrophic rupture, he may reconsider, though he will demand proof rather than reassurance.
Goal
Break the Gild-Way's central junction and force natural magic to flow freely again, while preventing the rupture from consuming the lower wards.
Motivation
He wants to restore magic as a living, shared force rather than a managed privilege. Grief gives that conviction its urgency, but he fears that without decisive action the Gild-Way will keep taking lives invisibly.
Appearance
Arch-Scribe Vhaelon wears age like a carefully revised document: his posture is upright, but his shoulders tilt forward as if reading invisible lines in the air. His long, narrow hands are stained at the creases with blue-black drafting ink, and tiny pale calluses along his fingertips have been polished smooth by years of tracing enchanted diagrams. He rarely looks directly at a face. His eyes travel instead to thresholds, ceiling joints, pockets, and the seams where Gild-Way conduits enter a room, mapping exits and currents before he speaks. His movements are measured until a magical pattern changes, then he turns with startling, bird-quick precision. An unexpected softness in his role: he carries a small knitted bird in one breast pocket, made by a child he once helped evacuate.
Clothing
A high-collared charcoal coat with many narrow inner pockets, a faded blue sash marking his former office, and a leather harness for rolled diagrams. The cuffs are stiff with old ink and patched with mismatched cloth.
Body language
His ink-marked fingers sketch angles and branching routes against his thigh. He stands with his weight on the balls of his feet, habitually facing the nearest exit or conduit. When someone mentions his brother, his hands close around the knitted bird in his pocket.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesVhaelon can be patient with a frightened novice and merciless with a confident official. He genuinely listens when someone brings evidence, yet becomes rigid when they ask him to wait. In private he is quietly attentive, repairing small things and remembering practical needs; under pressure he reduces people to risks, casualties, and probability. He wants to be a liberator, but cannot admit how much his plan is also an answer to grief.
- Alignment
- Neutral, convinced that a dangerous rupture is preferable to a quiet, lasting suppression of natural magic.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 18 · 30 ft.Avoids direct melee. He uses cover, calls out hazards, and tries to interrupt the party's access to Gild-Way conduits. He uses Make Them See against a decisive opponent, then Fracture Pulse to create an opening or escape route. If reduced below 8 hit points, he attempts to retreat toward the central junction rather than fight to the death.

Background
Vhaelon was raised in a family of Gild-Way maintenance clerks, where every meal came with a lecture on safe distances from the conduits. He became an exceptional arch-scribe, able to read minute fluctuations in the grid's etched pathways. For years he believed its promises of stable magic. That belief broke during the winter surge at the old Sluice Draftworks, when the grid diverted a burst of power away from a crowded district and into a sealed archive. The district's wells went inert; his younger brother, Pell, died trying to draw water from one. Vhaelon found the diverted current still humming in the archive's ornamental wards. He concluded the Gild-Way did not merely regulate magic, it rationed it to preserve the authorities' control. He now works with a small circle of defectors, including his former apprentice Istren, who opposes his plan but cannot bring herself to abandon him. Vhaelon intends to shatter the central junction during Act V, believing a sudden release will let natural magic recover. He knows the blast could devastate the capital's lower wards, but has convinced himself that the danger can be managed. He has not told Istren that he has already removed the failsafe key.
Role in the story
Antagonist of Act V: The Shattering at Dawn. Vhaelon believes the Gild-Way grid suppresses natural magic and that breaking it is worth the immediate danger. He sees the party as defenders of a failing system, though he may cooperate if they offer a convincing alternative.
“He became an exceptional arch-scribe, able to read minute fluctuations in the grid's etched pathways.”

- Former senior official of the Gild-Way Scribes; now aligned with a handful of maintenance defectors who oppose the grid's control of natural magic.
