Janko
Janko
At the table
Voice
Janko's voice has a dry, slightly rasping edge from years of calling across windy terraces and breathing orchard dust. He projects without shouting, with the sturdy rhythm of someone used to giving instructions while carrying a load. His words sometimes catch on a rough chuckle when he is amused; when frightened, he speaks faster and repeats practical details.
He speaks in practical clauses shaped by years of giving instructions over wind, water, and work: short enough to carry across a terrace, but often followed by a more thoughtful explanation. His vocabulary is full of grafts, roots, weather, and timing. When embarrassed, he overexplains the simplest point.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Janko is wary of strangers who treat the grove as scenery or a resource to be taken. He warms quickly to anyone who offers useful labor, asks before cutting, or admits they do not know something. Earn his trust by helping investigate the winter fruit or by speaking honestly with Tovin about the risks of the lower orchard.
Goal
Discover why the lower orchard is bearing black-seeded fruit in winter and stop the change without destroying the trees.
Motivation
To keep the grove alive without repeating the stubborn, solitary choices that once harmed the whole settlement.
Appearance
Janko is tall and slightly stooped, with long, jointed fingers that move delicately among young shoots but curl into blunt hooks when he is worried. His uneven mustache looks as if he trimmed one side with a pruning knife and forgot the other. He smells plainly of damp loam, crushed leaves, and the sharp green scent of sap, and makes no effort to hide it. His coat is patched at both elbows with mismatched cloth, but a small brass watering nozzle at his collar is polished every morning. He walks with a careful, heel-first tread, testing the ground before trusting it. People remember him as someone who seems to be listening to the trees even while answering them.
Clothing
A faded brown work coat with badly matched elbow patches, a moss-green scarf tucked into the collar, mud-stiff trousers, and boots resoled with pale leather. The brass watering nozzle pinned at his collar is conspicuously cared for.
Body language
He angles his long fingers toward whatever he is discussing, as though indicating where a branch should grow. When troubled, he rubs the polished nozzle at his collar and plants both feet as if bracing against wind.

Personality
12 traits and drivesJanko wants to be generous and patient, but takes every failure of the grove as a personal accusation. In a calm season he is wry and attentive, happy to teach a stranger how to prune a branch. Under pressure he becomes stubbornly practical, cutting off debate to make a decision; once the danger passes, he is often ashamed of how little he listened. He is tender toward children and seedlings, yet distrustful of anyone who treats either as incapable of choosing for themselves.

Background
Janko was born in Veyra's Ladder, a settlement built along steep terraces where fruit trees cling to the hillside. His mother taught him to graft branches; his father taught him to brace a trunk before a storm rather than mourn it afterward. At seventeen, during the harvest remembered as the Long Frost, he tried to save an old pear grove by burning its roots for warmth. The trees survived, but the smoke ruined the valley's stores and several families went hungry. A patient neighbor, Eirwen, showed him how to ask for help before making a desperate choice. Janko has tended the groves ever since, and ties a red thread around his wrist for every harvest he survives. He has not explained why the threads are counted as harvests rather than years. He is close to his former mentor, Eirwen, and to her grandson, Tovin, a curious child who keeps sneaking into the forbidden lower orchard. A new problem shadows his work: one row of trees is fruiting in midwinter, and their black-seeded apples seem to draw small animals into a sleep from which they wake confused and hungry.
Role in the story
A grounded local guide and keeper of the settlement's food supply, Janko can draw the party into the mystery of the winter-fruiting trees. His past mistake gives the investigation personal stakes, while his connection to Tovin creates an urgent reason to act before the danger spreads.
