Carp
Carp
At the table
Voice
His voice has a soft, dry rasp, like reeds brushed together, with a rounded catch from his beak. Years of speaking to skittish wildlife taught him to articulate patiently; the memory of shouting over floodwater gives his warnings a sudden, carrying edge. His laughter begins as a low cluck and ends in a surprised snort.
Carp speaks in plain, carefully chosen sentences, shaped by a lifetime of explaining water, weather, and nesting grounds. He pauses to let others finish and often frames opinions as practical questions. His speech has the rounded consonants of someone who talks around a blunt beak; when excited, a soft clicking sound catches between words.

How to play them
Carp begins with concern rather than threats, asking what visitors want from the marsh and explaining what is at risk. If treated respectfully, he offers safe routes, local knowledge, and a chance to help repair damage. If attacked, he fights defensively. When defeated in Verdigris, he accepts the result without rancor, calls the victors great warriors, and offers to join them with the mech, provided they agree not to use it to harm the swamp.
Goal
Keep the nesting marsh intact and find a way to repair Verdigris without draining or dismantling the pools around its buried workshop.
Motivation
Carp wants to protect the living marsh without becoming its self-appointed ruler. He hopes to convince the surveyors that the swamp can be preserved, but also longs for companionship beyond the creatures he guards.
Appearance
A painted turtle barely reaches a human knee, but inside Verdigris he rises to the height of a draft horse. Carp's moss-green skin has the pebbled texture of river stones, with bright orange-red stripes painted naturally along his cheeks and neck. His blunt beak and square jaw make his smile look stern until he laughs, when his lower jaw juts forward and a tiny piece of watercress often sticks between his beak and chin. His shell is dark olive, ridged like old roof shingles, with pale rings dulled by generations of swamp water. He moves with deliberate, rocking steps; Verdigris answers with slow, weighty strides that send ripples through the bog. A neat, carefully mended yellow scarf is tied around his neck, wildly sunny against the mud-smeared machine. He leaves the impression of an ancient shrine that has decided to offer you tea.
Clothing
A faded yellow scarf with three precise patches, a reed-fiber harness, and a small pouch of dried pond herbs. The scarf is clean and carefully folded even when everything else is caked in swamp mud.
Body language
Carp angles his shell toward whoever seems most vulnerable. When weighing a decision, he rubs one foreclaw along the yellow scarf's repaired hem. Inside Verdigris, his hands move in small, careful circles over the controls, while the mech's head follows his gaze a moment later.

Combat
AC 16 · HP 22 · 20 ft.; swim 20 ft. while piloting VerdigrisCarp tries to block routes toward nests and avoid lethal force. He uses Verdigris's shell and limbs to control space, shoving intruders away from fragile ground and hurling nearby debris only when threatened. He warns opponents before fighting and stops as soon as they yield. If overwhelmed, he backs into deep water rather than pursuing.

Background
Carp hatched in the reed beds of Siltcut, a stretch of marsh left behind when an old canal project failed. His mother, Sibil, taught him the safe channels by tapping shell against submerged roots; his older clutchmate, Tham, left to guide boats and still sends him messages in bottles. As a young turtle, Carp found Verdigris sunk upright in a drowned workshop, its cockpit full of blue-black water and its bronze limbs tangled in eelgrass. When a spring flood carried a burning barge toward the nesting banks, Carp crawled inside the machine and, terrified, shoved the barge sideways with a force he did not know he possessed. The wreck still marks the place where the hatchlings survived. That rescue changed him: he decided that protecting the swamp was his responsibility, but learned to fear how easily protection can become control. Now Verdigris's old seals are failing, and a group of surveyors plans to reopen the canal through the nesting marsh. Carp has warned them away, frightened their workers, and wrecked their measuring stakes. He would rather persuade them, but each week the water grows shallower.
