Sigrid Hakonardottir
Sigrid Hakonardottir
At the table
Voice
A dry, weathered rasp shaped by years of cold air, smoke, and long hearings in crowded rooms. Her consonants are crisp from the habit of making testimony legible; the ends of sentences often carry a faint catch, as if she is weighing whether to add one more fact.
She speaks in carefully built clauses, separating what is known from what is inferred. She often pauses before a name, as if giving the person room to enter the record. When the room grows heated, she does not lower her voice; she makes each word more sharply articulated and uses plain, concrete consequences instead of threats.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Sigrid offers a private first hearing to anyone with information, then explains exactly how she will use it. She rewards precision, not confidence. If the party presses for immediate judgment, she asks what evidence they can produce and who will be endangered by waiting. She will cooperate with investigators who protect witnesses and keep household loyalties out of their questioning.
Goal
Establish what happened in Twelve for One before anyone is executed, then secure a resolution that neither household can turn into a license for retaliation.
Motivation
To make the law useful to living people rather than a polished justification for whatever the strongest household already intends to do.
Appearance
Sigrid has the weathered, steady look of someone accustomed to hearing bad news before breakfast. Her face is broad and mobile, with deep creases beside her mouth from years of holding back comments until witnesses finish. She moves carefully, planting each step as if testing ice, then turns with unexpected speed when someone tries to leave before answering. Her wool layers are patched in precise squares, but the cuffs are conspicuously mismatched, one folded twice and the other hanging loose. Within a minute, most people notice her habit of checking the small bone toggle at her throat whenever a dispute turns personal. Despite her severe public role, she keeps a tiny carved seal pup tucked into her belt, its snout polished smooth by her thumb.
Clothing
A smoke-grey wool dress under a weatherproof brown overcoat, both mended with neat, visible patches. A braided sash carries a wax tablet, charcoal, and the settlement's carved hearing token. Her left cuff is folded twice to keep it clear of ink; her right cuff is frayed and left untouched.
Body language
She stands square to the person speaking and keeps both hands visible. When someone threatens a feud, she touches the bone toggle at her throat, then deliberately rests her hands flat on the table. She does not loom; she makes people come to her side of the room to be heard.

Personality
13 traits and drivesSigrid is patient with confused witnesses but has little patience for people who use certainty as a weapon. She wants to be fair and fears being fooled, so she can cross-examine a grieving person with an unnerving lack of warmth. In private she is generous with food, practical help, and second chances. Under pressure she becomes brisk and procedural; when she feels safe, a dry, almost mischievous humor emerges.

Background
Sigrid was raised between two households that shared winter stores and distrusted one another over an old boundary dispute. As a young woman she served as a witness and record-keeper at local hearings, believing that a carefully remembered fact could prevent any quarrel from becoming violence. Then, during the famine winter remembered as the Long Melt, her younger brother confessed to taking a neighbor's barley. Sigrid repeated his confession at a hearing, expecting a restitution agreement. Instead, the injured household's kin dragged him outside and beat him badly before anyone could intervene. He survived, but left the settlement and has not returned. Sigrid learned that a judgment can be just in wording and disastrous in consequence. She became law-speaker after the previous judge died, and now works to make testimony credible without letting procedure become an excuse for vengeance. Her current case, Twelve for One, threatens to repeat the old pattern: a group stands accused, executions are demanded, and every hour of delay is being called an insult by one household or another. Sigrid is quietly consulting her former apprentice, Olan, while trying to keep her estranged brother's name out of the proceedings.
Role in the story
Questgiver and settlement authority in Twelve for One. Sigrid wants an independent, credible investigation before the accused are executed, while preventing the dispute from hardening into a feud between households.
