At the table

Voice

A dry, papery rasp pushed from a body that does not breathe, with the carrying projection of someone accustomed to shouting orders across a ravine. His voice catches slightly on names of the dead, but anger makes him faster and more blunt, not softer.

His words have the clipped cadence of a soldier used to making himself heard over wind and steel. He places consonants firmly, leaves little space for interruption, and occasionally slips into old marching commands. His breath never fogs, and his voice has a dry, papery rasp, as if it has passed through smoke.

Speech patterns

Uses short, practical sentences shaped by military habit.
Refers to living people as 'the breathing' when tired, then catches himself.
Answers personal questions with a question about the other person's safety or plans.
Uses old unit commands under stress, even when nobody present knows what they mean.

How to play them

He offers practical help before trust, such as standing watch or repairing gear. He responds well to calm honesty and clear choices. Threats framed as orders may trigger the pact's compulsion, while kindness toward frightened civilians earns his regard faster than flattery.

Goal

Find the other returned soldiers, free them from Ketu's contract, and eventually tell Tamu what happened in the ravine.

Motivation

He wants his second life to belong to him, not to the demon that bought it.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A lean, human-shaped soldier whose edges seem to drink in nearby darkness. His skin has the matte texture of cooled candle soot, but faint blue-black veins show through when he moves. He walks with the measured heel-to-toe placement of someone crossing a battlefield strewn with sleeping wounded. His hands are the first thing most people notice: broad, cracked across the knuckles, and permanently stained with black pitch from maintaining his old unit's weapons. He smells strongly of wet iron and extinguished lamp oil, an odor he knows about and tries to cover with crushed mint. The unexpected detail is that he carries a tiny, neatly mended child's mitten tucked into his belt, wrapped in clean linen.

Clothing

A patched soldier's coat beneath a dark, scuffed leather harness, with a weather-stained gray scarf wrapped around his neck. He keeps his old company badge turned inward and wears a belt of practical pouches, a whetstone, and the linen-wrapped mitten.

Body language

He stands as if braced against a shield line, shoulders angled toward the greatest threat. His fingers constantly test the edges of his equipment. When someone mentions the dead, he rubs his thumb over the mitten at his belt; when someone gives an order, his whole body briefly stills before he decides whether to obey.

Distinguishing features

His outline feathers into smoke at the edge of torchlight.
His hands are cracked and pitch-stained from years of weapon maintenance, despite being unable to feel ordinary warmth.
He carries a tiny child's mitten, meticulously mended with faded blue thread.
The smell of wet iron and dead lamp oil follows him, and he makes a visible effort to mask it with mint.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Shadow blood is disciplined enough to follow a plan through miserable conditions, yet stubbornly disobedient when an order endangers the helpless. Around strangers he is guarded and dryly observant; among fellow soldiers he becomes unexpectedly patient, teaching without condescension. When ashamed, he grows formal and distant. When frightened, he becomes more active, checking straps, counting ammunition, and finding work for everyone nearby.

Alignment
Neutral, with a hard-won loyalty to people who keep faith.

Quirks

He tests a cup's shadow with one finger before drinking from it.
He turns his company badge inward whenever someone praises soldiers.
He folds spare bandages into tiny squares, then unfolds and refolds them when thinking.
He leaves a small pinch of crushed mint beside every lamp he extinguishes.

Habits

Counts exits and sources of light as soon as he enters a room.
Takes the outside watch even when someone else volunteers.
Covers lamps before discussing the pact, as though darkness might be listening.
When afraid, becomes precise and practical rather than openly panicked.

Traits · 3

He prizes discipline, but believes a command that abandons the helpless is already broken.
He distrusts affection offered too quickly, yet quietly remembers every kindness.
He speaks like a veteran giving a report, but has a soft spot for children and frightened animals.

Flaws · 3

He treats any clear command as an irresistible pressure, even when he knows he can refuse.
He conceals urgent problems until he has a plan, which can leave allies dangerously uninformed.
He is willing to endanger himself to protect civilians, even when retreat would save the whole group.

Fears · 3

Being compelled to kill someone by the demon's command.
Discovering that the other returned soldiers have become willing servants.
Meeting Tamu and seeing fear or disgust in her face.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs a way to resist Ketu's command phrase.
Wants proof that the other returned soldiers can still choose their own actions.
Needs to tell someone trustworthy about the prisoner he killed.

Combat

AC 14 · HP 11 · 30 ft.

He favors cover, darkness, and disciplined withdrawal over a glorious stand. He opens with his crossbow, then closes on isolated foes with his shortsword. He uses Umbral Step to reach cover or escape a grapple, and avoids bright open spaces. If allies are endangered, he will break his own careful formation to draw attackers away.

Background

Before he was Shadow blood, he was Oruyo, a rank-and-file infantryman in the border company called the Last Mile, named with bitter humor because its posts were always the furthest from help. During a winter retreat, his company was cut off in a ravine while escorting civilians away from a collapsing frontier. Their captain, Gak, ordered the soldiers to hold the pass. When the wounded began to freeze, Oruyo disobeyed and carried a child named Tamu toward shelter. He was killed before he reached it. In the ravine's darkness, a demon called Ketu offered the dying soldiers their bodies back in exchange for their service. Oruyo accepted, and the company rose as shadow-touched soldiers. The bargain restored his life but not his pulse, and the demon marked each survivor with a craving to obey commands spoken in its name. Oruyo now hides among caravan guards, trying to find the others and learn how to break their pact. He still searches for Tamu, who survived and is now old enough to have a family of her own. He sends her money anonymously, but has never dared to meet her.

Role in the story

A wary ally, potential antagonist under supernatural compulsion, or guide to the hidden network of soldiers who returned from death. His choices can reveal whether a pact-made life can become a freely chosen one.
