Tamu
Tamu
At the table
Voice
A clear, slightly rough voice shaped by cold air and years of shouting warnings across stone. Tamu's words carry a faint breathy rasp after a long climb, and they often pause mid-sentence to listen for movement overhead.
Tamu speaks in plain, work-worn phrases, often naming the next practical step before explaining why it matters. They use clipped consonants learned from calling warnings across ravines and pause to listen before answering personal questions.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Tamu responds best to practical honesty and shared work. They are initially guarded about the ravine and their rescuer, but will open up if someone helps repair a path or takes their fears seriously without treating them as fragile.
Goal
Find the person who carried them out of the ravine and learn what happened to them.
Motivation
To discover who saved them, understand why the memory still feels unfinished, and become someone capable of saving others in turn.
Appearance
Tamu is a lean young adult with a steady, economical way of moving, placing each foot as if the ground might shift beneath it. Their dark hair is cut unevenly with a small knife and often catches flecks of pale ravine dust. They smell faintly of wet stone, smoke, and the bitter leaf oil they rub into their boots, a scent they have stopped noticing. Their work coat is too large at the shoulders and patched with careful, close stitches; its frayed red lining is kept improbably clean. Tamu's shadow sometimes seems to lag a heartbeat behind their movements, most noticeable in lamplight.
Clothing
An oversized, smoke-brown work coat with a carefully mended red lining, a faded shirt, sturdy trousers, and boots treated with bitter leaf oil. A length of cord is looped around one wrist.
Body language
Tamu leans slightly forward as though listening for loose rock. They turn their whole body toward a speaker rather than just their head, and rest one hand on their walking stick when uncertain. In a crowd, they unconsciously leave a clear route to the nearest exit.

Background
As a child, Tamu was trapped in a ravine after a sudden rockfall buried the old goat path. A stranger found them and carried them out through a narrow cleft while the slope continued to break apart. Tamu remembers the stranger's coat, the rasp of his breathing, and a promise to come back; they were too feverish to remember his face. The rescuer was later reported dead, and Tamu grew up believing that the promise belonged to a ghostly kindness rather than a living person. Tamu now repairs footbridges and guides travelers through the ravine country. Their adoptive aunt, Nara, worries that Tamu takes needless risks trying to repay an unnamed debt. Lately, Tamu has seen a familiar silhouette in places where nobody stands, and has begun asking after the stranger. The rescuer has returned to life, but Tamu has not yet learned it.
Role in the story
A grounded, living connection to the person who returned from death. Tamu can lead the party toward the ravine and its unresolved history, while their ignorance of the rescuer's return creates an emotionally charged reunion.
“A stranger found them and carried them out through a narrow cleft while the slope continued to break apart.”
