Nelo Amaro
Nelo Amaro
At the table
Voice
A weathered, grainy voice that carries well across a yard without becoming a bark. The sound catches slightly after long periods of shouting, and his words land in measured units, like instructions called across a line of shields.
His voice is roughened by cold watches, shouting over horses, and years of speaking through a mail coif. He articulates carefully, with the clipped timing of someone used to giving instructions that must be understood the first time. His border-country vowels round out when he speaks to family. Anger makes him more literal and more specific, not softer: he names the consequence he expects and who will pay for it.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Nelo responds best to direct questions and practical offers. He is wary of flattery, but respects people who notice the consequences of a decision for ordinary families. If approached as a fellow professional, he shares useful information about patrols and the baron's household. If pressed to betray his oath, he asks what will happen to the people left exposed.
Goal
Persuade Baron Iago to reduce the new levy and secure winter stores for the boundary villages without abandoning his post.
Motivation
He wants his oath to mean protection rather than obedience for its own sake, and hopes to leave the baron's villages safer than he found them.
Appearance
Nelo has a weather-browned face, a blunt nose, and a close-cropped dark beard threaded with gray. He moves with a slight, deliberate favoring of his left leg, as if every step were placed on a narrow stair; in a fight, that careful pace turns into a sudden, braced lunge. He smells strongly of beeswax, damp wool, and the pear vinegar he uses to clean his mail. The scent follows him into warm rooms, and he knows it. For a man-at-arms who spends his days among horse sweat and iron, he is unexpectedly particular about keeping a little bundle of dried pear leaves in his helmet to freshen the air.
Clothing
A knee-length wool surcoat over a riveted mail hauberk, with a mail coif and chausses for battle. Off duty he wears a faded linen shirt, a patched brown wool cloak, and stout boots. His belt is practical and plain, with no ornamental sword knot.
Body language
He stands square, shoulders slightly forward under the remembered weight of armor. His left leg stays planted when others shift; his right hand rests near his belt, never quite gripping it. He watches faces and exits in turns, and when listening closely he tips his head as if measuring the speaker's words for balance.

Personality
13 traits and drivesNelo is patient with frightened people and exacting with careless ones. He dislikes grand claims but will stand behind a promise long after its maker has forgotten it. In calm company he is dryly funny and observant; under pressure he becomes brisk and controlling, then feels ashamed if he has treated a frightened recruit like a disobedient soldier. He can admire the baron and still refuse an order he believes will harm the people the baron is meant to protect.
- Alignment
- Lawful, though his loyalty is to people and promises before written orders.

Background
Nelo was born to a tenant family near the baron's boundary ford and learned early that a full granary mattered more than a grand speech. He entered household service as a teenager, first carrying messages and tending horses, then earning his place in the baron's armed retinue. During a winter crossing at Bent Ford, a panicked levy broke formation under pressure. Nelo held the ford long enough for villagers to escape, but his younger brother drowned in the floodwater while trying to bring back a trapped child. Nelo has never forgiven himself for surviving, though he refuses to let anyone call the dead boy a fool. He later became a steady escort for Baron Iago's household and a patient trainer of recruits. His sister Dalia runs their family's small holding and wants him to leave service before another campaign takes him away. Meanwhile, the baron expects Nelo to help enforce a new levy on the same villages he once defended. Nelo is weighing loyalty against the knowledge that the demand may ruin people who have already paid too much.
