At the table

Voice

A dry, chest-resonant rasp shaped by forge heat and years of calling measurements over hammer noise. His words have the deliberate, clipped clarity of a smith checking a fit; names of awakened blades receive a more careful, almost reverent articulation.

His voice is a dry, chest-resonant rasp, with a slight catch of breath after years of working over a hot forge. He places consonants like tools on a bench, cleanly and without hurry. He draws out the name of a blade when honoring it, but clips commands short when danger starts.

Speech patterns

Uses a blade's name as though addressing a person, and corrects anyone who calls an awakened weapon merely a tool.
Explains difficult ideas through the sequence of a forging process: heat, strike, quench, listen.
When uncertain, asks a question precise enough to reveal what evidence he still needs.
Under pressure, replaces long explanations with short shop-floor commands.

How to play them

Wulfric responds best to concrete evidence, skilled workmanship, and honest accounts of consequences. He will happily discuss metallurgy with strangers who listen carefully, but shuts down anyone demanding access to Crucible secrets. A character who brings a strange magical item or a credible account of an awakened blade can earn his attention. If confronted about his theory, he admits enough to invite a serious discussion but initially withholds the sample's most disturbing tone.

Goal

Determine whether Steel Keeper blade metal carries souls, and establish a way to learn the truth without harming a living bearer.

Motivation

To make the Steel Keepers' weapons safer and more truthful, even if the truth undermines the tradition that gave his life meaning.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A stocky dwarf with a barrel torso and a forge-worker's planted, economical gait. His long, frazzled dark-grey hair escapes its leather ties in wiry tufts, while his immense braided beard is threaded with small steel rings that click against one another when he turns. His teeth are broad and slightly flattened from a lifetime of tasting hot metal by touching tools to them; when he laughs, his square jaw opens in a startlingly wide, unguarded grin. He keeps a thumb-sized tuning fork tucked into the beard braid over his left shoulder, its handle polished almost smooth where he worries it during thought. His presence suggests a furnace that has learned patience: heat held in reserve, never absent.

Clothing

A soot-darkened smith's apron over practical mail and a well-maintained breastplate, with a heavy wool coat for travel. His gloves are tucked through his belt rather than worn at the forge, and a stitched patch on the apron marks the place where a molten rivet once burned through.

Body language

He stands with his feet set as if bracing against a hammer blow, and turns his whole torso rather than craning his neck. When listening closely he presses the tuning fork through his beard braid and feels its vibration against his thumb. His jaw works once before he gives an answer he dislikes.

Distinguishing features

The tiny tuning fork woven into his beard braid, polished almost smooth at its handle from constant thumb-rubbing.
Small steel rings in his immense beard click softly whenever he turns his head.
Broad, flattened teeth show prominently when he laughs, and he habitually tests hot tools against them.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Wulfric is disciplined enough to count every hammer strike and curious enough to risk ruining a perfect ingot just to learn what lies beneath its surface. He is warm and wry with apprentices who admit mistakes, but formal and immovable when a keeper's safety is at stake. Praise makes him suspicious; practical criticism earns his respect. When ashamed, he turns brisk and technical, while grief makes him unusually patient.

Alignment
Lawful neutral

Quirks

Taps every new blade three times against his tuning fork, then waits through a long silence before judging the sound.
Keeps a running list of awakened blades' names on slate, but recites them from memory while working.
Bites a hot tool lightly against his flattened teeth to judge its temperature, a habit that alarms visitors.
When thinking, rubs the tuning fork's worn handle and unconsciously clicks the steel rings in his beard together.
Apologizes to a piece of metal before cutting or reshaping it, then insists this is not superstition.

Habits

Tests a room's acoustics with a fingernail tap on a metal fitting before settling into conversation.
In the forge, he gives exact instructions and expects them followed; among grieving keepers, he lets silences run without trying to repair them.
When excited by a technical puzzle, he interrupts himself to sketch diagrams on whatever scrap is handy.
After any blade is drawn, he checks whether its wielder has a clear retreat before considering the enemy.

Traits · 4

He honors procedure but questions traditions that cannot explain their own purpose.
He is generous with practical help and guarded with personal affection.
He speaks plainly about failure, yet hides his own doubts inside technical language.
He is proud of his innovations and genuinely willing to abandon them if evidence proves them harmful.

Flaws · 3

Treats a promising experiment as a moral exception until someone he trusts forces him to say the risks aloud.
Remembers every blade's name more readily than the living people who carry them.
Can mistake caution for a lack of imagination, especially when Ravaan Kiri challenges him.

Fears · 3

That the voices he hears in awakened steel are real souls held against their will.
That proving his theory will require sacrificing a keeper or destroying a blade that contains a person's last trace.
That his life's work has made the Steel Keepers more powerful while making them less honest.

Wants and needs · 4

A trustworthy way to test the alloy sample without endangering a bearer.
Ravaan Kiri's counsel, even when he resents hearing it.
A chance to make amends to Shesset without demanding that she forgive him.
Evidence that the Steel Keepers' tradition can face the truth without collapsing into fear.

Combat

AC 18 · HP 220 · 25 ft.

He plants himself between threats and vulnerable allies, then uses Ringer's reach and two measured strikes to force enemies away from his line. He saves Steel Resonance for a decisive item suppression, a dangerous burst of damage reduction, or a teleport that rescues an ally or puts him beside a caster. Against magic-item wielders he targets the item only when doing so will meaningfully change the fight. He will retreat if the party is endangered, but never abandons a fallen keeper.

Steel Keeper Training. Proficient with martial weapons, light and medium armor, and shields. Uses Strength for Ringer's attack and damage rolls.
Bonded Blade. Ringer is a magical bonded weapon and returns to Wulfric's hand as a Bonus Action. Other creatures cannot willingly use it.
Resonant Strike. Once on each of his turns when he hits with Ringer, Wulfric deals an extra thunder damage.
Adaptive Fighting Style. Defense. Wulfric gains a bonus to AC while wearing armor.
Extra Attack. When Wulfric takes the Attack action with Ringer, he attacks twice.
Awakened Edge. Ringer scores a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20. After a critical hit, Wulfric can move up to half his Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
Steel Resonance. Wulfric has 6 uses, regains all uses on a Long Rest, and regains 1 use when he rolls Initiative with none remaining.
Manifestations, custom. Ringer has the Null Bell, Guarding Chime, and Step Between Notes manifestations. He can change one chosen manifestation after a Long Rest.
Null Bell, custom manifestation. When Wulfric hits a creature or object with Ringer, he can spend 1 Steel Resonance to suppress one magical property of a non-artifact magic item he can see until the start of his next turn. The item makes a Charisma saving throw to resist. This does not end spells or dispel ongoing spell effects.
Guarding Chime, custom manifestation. When Wulfric spends 1 Steel Resonance after taking damage, reduce that damage by .
Step Between Notes, custom manifestation. When Wulfric spends 1 Steel Resonance immediately after hitting with Ringer, he teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space he can see.
Greater Resonant Strike. Once per turn when Wulfric hits with Ringer, he can apply one additional effect from a manifestation he knows without spending Steel Resonance.
Blade-Sworn Resolve. When Wulfric fails a saving throw, he can spend 1 Steel Resonance to reroll it, adding his Strength modifier to the new roll. He must use the new roll.
Mythic Edge. Ringer's magical abilities ignore resistance to their damage types and Ringer counts as an artifact for overcoming magical barriers and protections.
Perfect Awakening, custom. Once per Long Rest, Wulfric can use an action to awaken Ringer fully for 1 minute. Its Null Bell can suppress a non-artifact magic item's properties without a saving throw when he hits it, and the target cannot regain those properties until the awakening ends. This does not destroy artifacts, end spells, or suppress a creature's innate magical abilities.
Crucible Order feature, custom. When Wulfric uses Guarding Chime to reduce damage, one creature of his choice within 10 feet also gains resistance to that instance of damage.
Dwarven Resilience. Advantage on saving throws against poison and resistance to poison damage.

Actions

Multiattack. Wulfric makes two attacks with Ringer. Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: bludgeoning damage, plus thunder damage from Resonant Strike once per turn. Ringer scores a critical hit on a 19 or 20.
Ringer. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: bludgeoning damage. Once on each of Wulfric's turns, the hit deals an additional thunder damage. On a hit, he can spend 1 Steel Resonance to use Null Bell, or teleport up to 30 feet using Step Between Notes. At level 20, Mythic Edge lets Ringer's magical abilities ignore resistance to their damage types.
Null Bell. Wulfric strikes a non-artifact magic item he can reach with Ringer. The item is suppressed until the start of Wulfric's next turn, with no saving throw. This suppresses the item's magical properties only. It does not destroy the item, end a spell, or affect an artifact. Once per Long Rest, Wulfric can instead use Perfect Awakening to make this suppression last for the awakening's 1-minute duration.
Perfect Awakening. Wulfric releases Ringer's perfect awakening, choosing its Null Bell effect. For 1 minute, once on each of his turns when he hits a non-artifact magic item with Ringer, its magical properties are suppressed until the awakening ends. This requires no saving throw, but does not end spells, affect artifacts, or suppress innate magical abilities. Once per Long Rest.

Reactions

Guarding Chime. When Wulfric or a creature he can see within 10 feet takes damage, he can spend 1 Steel Resonance to reduce that damage by . With his custom Crucible Order feature, one creature he chooses within 10 feet also gains resistance to that instance of damage.
Blade-Sworn Resolve. When Wulfric fails a saving throw, he can spend 1 Steel Resonance to reroll it, adding +5 to the new roll. He must use the new roll.

Background

Wulfric Ironhand is the oldest of the nine High Blade Captains and the ninth captain of the Steel Keepers, a rank he took after decades at the Crucible brigade's forge. He began as a smith's apprentice whose first commission was a plain utility knife, but his life changed during the Ashfall breach: a keeper's blade shattered while shielding a retreating squad, and Wulfric heard a clear, human note continue from the broken fragments after the wielder had died. He gathered the pieces and spent years learning to make a blade awaken rather than merely hold an edge. His experiments advanced the Crucible's closely guarded forging tradition, though Master Ravaan Kiri respects his brilliance and regularly warns him that discovery is not permission. Wulfric remembers every awakened blade's name and the hands that first carried it. Now a new alloy sample produces overlapping tones when struck, including one that matches the dead keeper from Ashfall. He suspects Steel Keeper blades are infused with souls, a theory that could explain their awakenings or expose an unforgivable practice. He has not told the full council. His former apprentice, Shesset, left the forge after Wulfric refused to let her test a blade on a living bearer; she still sends him precise, angry letters, and he keeps every one.

Role in the story

A formidable ally and moral fault line within the Steel Keepers. Wulfric can provide the party with repairs, insight into awakened weapons, or access to Crucible knowledge, while his theory about souls in steel raises the stakes of using, breaking, or claiming a Steel Keeper Blade.
