Princess
Princess
At the table
Voice
Her voice is a physical sound rather than speech: dry, hard jaw-clicks, low vibrations that carry through packed soil, and vent-hisses shaped by the pressure of her heated gills. A strong rumble can be felt underfoot before it is heard.
Princess does not speak in words. She communicates with jaw-clicks, resonant rumbles, changes in her vent pressure, and deliberate fin and tail gestures.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Let Rynalynn introduce visitors when possible. Approach from the front, keep movements deliberate, and do not touch the flower wreath or her vents. She accepts calm presence and familiar farm scents more readily than commands. If she blocks a path, treating the threat she has sensed as real is more effective than trying to force past her.
Goal
Discover the source of the new tremors and keep it from reaching Leafwhorl Farm.
Motivation
Keep Rynalynn and the farm safe, while understanding the growing disturbance beneath the fields.
Appearance
Princess is a massive, shark-shaped Shup, low and rolling through water with the ease of a landslide. Her hide is pebbled and slick as wet basalt, charcoal along the back and fading to a furnace-orange glow across her belly. Heated vents run in a row behind her gills; they exhale brief white plumes that smell of mineral springs and struck stone. Her rib plates flare when she is alarmed, while electric pulses flicker at the tips of her broad fins. She carries her blunt, powerful tail like a piledriver, but turns with startling precision. An unexpected touch of vanity: she keeps a tiny wreath of farm-grown flowers looped around one dorsal fin, replacing it whenever it wilts.
Clothing
Body language
Her tail makes a measured side-to-side sweep when she is assessing someone. A vent-puff signals impatience; flared rib plates mean danger is close. She lowers her head and angles one fin toward Rynalynn when asking for reassurance, then plants herself broadside across the path if she means to protect someone.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesPrincess is fiercely protective but not blindly obedient: she will disobey Rynalynn if she believes danger is near, then sulk when she is proved wrong. She is patient with familiar people and surprisingly attentive to their routines, but sudden noise or unfamiliar movement can turn her from placid sentinel to explosive defender. At ease, she is curious and vain about her flower wreath; under pressure, she becomes stubbornly practical and treats every obstacle as something to shove aside.
- Alignment
- Protective and loyal, but not tame in the ordinary sense.

Aquatic.Princess puts herself between danger and Rynalynn, using her bulk to block approaches before striking. She opens with a steam burst or a warning flare of her vents, then uses her bite and close-range attacks against the most immediate threat. Against a crowd, she uses Shockwave Roar to disrupt enemies within 10 m. She avoids chasing distant foes if it would leave the farm or Rynalynn exposed.

Background
Princess began as a scaled pup, a Scorchling, near the steam vents of Kryllara. She bonded with Rynalynn Leafwhorl during a vent flare, when Rynalynn stayed beside the frightened creature instead of fleeing the boiling spray. Years later, Princess survived an unstable-ground discharge and matured into a Flashvent. Her defining change came at Hearthroot: a steamquake buckled the ground beneath Leafwhorl Farm, and Princess braced her body across a collapsing irrigation trench long enough for Rynalynn and the farmhands to escape. Defending them from the surge brought her into her adult Volcraze form. Now she guards the farm in the Perma Day, patrols its hot springs and drainage cuts, and drives off anything that threatens the people she has chosen. She is not merely a guard: she recognizes the farmhands, remembers who has fed her, and has a long-running rivalry with a stubborn pump that rattles at night. Her current problem is that deep, unfamiliar tremors have begun traveling beneath the fields. She senses them before anyone else, but cannot tell whether they mean a new eruption or something moving underground.
Role in the story
A memorable, formidable companion and sentinel at Leafwhorl Farm. Princess can warn the party of underground danger, protect the farm during a crisis, or become an obstacle if the party appears to threaten Rynalynn.
