At the table

Voice

A weather-roughened voice with a little breath behind each hard consonant, shaped by calling orders over harbor noise. It has an even, practical cadence when he is calm; when irritated, his words become faster and more sharply separated, as if he is marking steps on a patrol route.

His words carry the clipped rhythm of someone accustomed to being heard over wind, gulls, and rope creak. He ends instructions cleanly and rarely repeats himself unless he thinks the listener is frightened. Years of calling across piers have left a faint rasp at the edges of his consonants.

Speech patterns

Asks people to repeat a statement in a different order, watching for details that change.
Uses dock and weather comparisons when explaining a difficult choice.
Avoids grand speeches; he gives short instructions, then explains his reasoning if someone stays to listen.
Calls people by their trade or neighborhood when he cannot remember their names, then apologizes if they correct him.

How to play them

Geddik is direct with people who appear frightened and formal with people who appear powerful. He listens carefully before making an accusation, but he does not promise that listening will erase consequences. A character who offers specific evidence, protects a witness, or accepts responsibility for a risky choice earns his respect. Threats make him procedural and stubborn.

Goal

Keep the waterfront safe without making innocent people pay for the council's desire to appear decisive.

Motivation

He wants to prove that a watchman can be effective without becoming an instrument of whoever shouts loudest.

Appearance

Geddik stands with his weight settled on the balls of his feet, as if the boards beneath him might suddenly become a gangplank. He walks with a compact, heel-light stride and pauses so abruptly that people sometimes continue past him before noticing. His face is broad and wind-chapped, his nose blunt, and his eyebrows thick enough to catch rain. His coat has the salt-stiff texture of old sailcloth, and the brass buttons are polished only where his thumb worries them. The unexpected detail is a tiny hand-painted paper moth pinned inside his watch collar, its wings carefully folded and bright with blue ink.

Clothing

A salt-stiff dark green watch coat over a patched wool vest, heavy trousers, scuffed boots with quiet soles, and a narrow leather belt for his baton, whistle, and cuffs. His collar hides the blue paper moth.

Body language

He balances forward on the balls of his feet and keeps his shoulders angled toward the nearest exit. His thumb rubs one brass button when he is weighing a lie. When he is angry, he plants both feet squarely and looks directly at the person, as if bracing a door against a storm.

A forward-leaning, heel-light gait that makes him seem perpetually ready to catch someone.
His brass buttons are polished in thumb-sized circles from anxious rubbing.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Geddik is firm enough to hold a line and humane enough to notice who is being pushed behind it. In public he favors rules, plain questions, and visible procedure; among people he trusts, he admits how often procedure fails those without influence. When tired, he becomes suspicious of everyone. When someone is frightened rather than defiant, his patience returns.

Alignment
Lawful neutral, with a stubborn preference for the law as written over the law as demanded.

Quirks

Counts doorways by tapping the inside of his wrist with his thumb.
Turns his whistle around in his fingers whenever someone mentions a council meeting.
Collects scraps of bright paper and folds them into crude moths, then leaves them on windowsills.
Tests a chair with one hand before sitting, even when it looks perfectly sound.

Habits

Counts exits whenever he enters a crowded room, then deliberately stands where he can see the most people.
When a complaint sounds rehearsed, asks the witness to tell it again starting from the middle.
During quiet patrols, checks that dockside doors are latched, even when they are not in his assigned ward.
If a frightened person begins to panic, he gives them a small task such as holding his lantern or naming nearby sounds.

Traits · 4

He distrusts easy confessions but respects people who admit uncertainty.
He is protective of ordinary workers and unusually careful around children.
He uses dry humor to release tension, though his timing is often a beat late.
He will challenge an order in private before he risks embarrassing a colleague in public.

Flaws · 3

He can mistake caution for fairness and delay action while trying to hear every side.
He is too willing to take personal responsibility for failures that belong to the whole watch.
Under pressure from his captain, he sometimes questions poor suspects more harshly than powerful ones.

Fears · 3

Being made to stand aside while someone is in danger, as he did during the warehouse fire.
Turning into an officer who mistakes a full arrest wagon for proof of good work.
Iven Broch being hurt because Geddik chose not to reveal their connection.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs the council to stop measuring safety by arrest totals.
Wants a reliable way to protect witnesses from pressure.
Needs to decide whether keeping his falsified record hidden is still protecting anyone.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 11 · 30 ft.

Geddik tries to control distance and stop an escape rather than win a prolonged fight. He uses the environment, calls for help early, and targets a weapon hand or knee with his baton. If civilians are present, he positions himself between them and the threat. He retreats if outnumbered rather than turning a street arrest into a killing.

Actions

Nightstick. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () bludgeoning damage. Geddik usually strikes hands, knees, or weapon arms rather than aiming to kill.
Watch Dart. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 4 () piercing damage. Geddik carries only three darts and uses them to pin clothing or discourage a chase.
Call the Watch. Geddik raises his whistle and gives a pattern of two short blasts and one long blast. Nearby Greyhook watch members who can hear it recognize a request for immediate assistance. This has no effect if no allies are within hearing.

Background

Geddik grew up hauling nets and messages along Greyhook's rain-dark piers. During a winter storm, a warehouse fire trapped several dockhands behind a jammed gate. Geddik was young, frightened, and ordered to hold the street instead of breaking rank. He watched the smoke climb over the roofs while the watch waited for permission. Afterward, he joined the watch because he wanted someone on the ground to make the next decision quickly. Years later, he helped Iven Broch through a dangerous night on the waterfront, and their connection has endured as a wary, practical friendship. Now his watch captain pressures him to make arrests that will satisfy Greyhook's council, especially before council meetings. Geddik is trying to distinguish genuine suspects from convenient ones while keeping his patrol partners employed and his own temper in check.

Role in the story

A pressured local officer whose choices can expose the divide between public safety and political theater. He can become an uneasy ally, a procedural obstacle, or a witness to the party's conduct.
