At the table

Voice

His voice has a dry, rasped edge from cold night air and years of calling warnings across wet streets. It carries plainly without shouting, with a slight catch on words that begin with a hard K after long shifts. He sounds most at ease when giving directions or telling a small, deadpan joke.

He speaks in short, workmanlike phrases, naming practical details before offering an opinion. His vocabulary is full of street names, door types, weather, and shift times. When he is worried he asks questions instead of making accusations; when angry he becomes blunt and specific, listing exactly what was done and who will bear the cost.

Speech patterns

Uses practical questions to show concern: "Have you eaten?" and "Which door did you come through?"
Names streets and landmarks precisely, even when everyone else uses nicknames.
When uneasy, repeats the last useful detail someone gave him before asking the next question.
Makes dry, understated jokes about weather, bad boots, and official forms.

How to play them

Meet him during a routine patrol or after a minor street disturbance. He is courteous but watchful with strangers, and becomes candid when someone asks about the needs of the neighborhood rather than demanding privileged information. Showing concern for the exhausted constables earns his attention. Pressuring him to sacrifice them for convenience makes him guarded.

Goal

Find who is diverting patrols with staged break-ins, while rebuilding the night roster so Daro and Pell can leave without shame or retaliation.

Motivation

Keep ordinary people safe through steady attention and humane judgment, without letting the watch's failures become another family's tragedy.

Appearance

Iven looks as if the city has been slowly rubbed into him. Rain has roughened his cheeks and reddened the bridge of his nose; soot settles in the creases around his eyes and stays there until a rare day off. His dark hair is cut close at the sides, with a stubborn cowlick that sticks up beneath his cap. He moves with a measured, heel-to-toe tread, placing each foot as if testing whether the paving stone is loose. A little brass handbell hangs from his belt, its handle worn smooth at one particular spot where his thumb worries it. The unexpected detail is a brightly patched blue quilted tea cosy, tied around his flask to keep it warm; it is absurdly cheerful against his rain-black uniform.

Clothing

A dark, rain-stained watch coat with patched elbows, a wool scarf tucked tight at the neck, thick gloves, and a flat cap with a cracked leather brim. A vivid blue quilted tea cosy is knotted around his metal flask.

Body language

Keeps his shoulders slightly rounded against imagined rain, even indoors. He angles himself between strangers and the nearest exit, taps the bell handle with his thumb when weighing a decision, and turns his whole body toward anyone who speaks rather than merely glancing over.

Distinguishing features

A small brass handbell hangs from his belt, with its handle polished smooth where his thumb repeatedly rubs it.
Rain-roughened skin and soot-dark creases around his eyes make him look permanently just off a shift.
His bright blue quilted tea cosy, tied around his flask, is strikingly domestic against his uniform.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Iven is patient with frightened people and exacting with careless colleagues, but he dislikes being treated as a hero. He can be warm and wry over tea, then stubbornly procedural when afraid of making a harmful mistake. After a failed call he turns inward and walks more; when someone else is in danger, his caution abruptly gives way to decisive action.

Alignment
Lawful neutral, with a strong preference for mercy over tidy paperwork

Quirks

Taps the worn handle of his bell three times before entering an unfamiliar building.
Keeps a private count of working streetlamps and reports each failure as if it were a missing person.
Wraps his flask in a cheerful blue tea cosy, then claims it was the only one available.
Leaves a heel of bread on the same low wall for a stray dog, though he insists he has never seen the animal.
When asked a difficult question, checks the speaker's boots as if the answer might be written in the mud.

Habits

Checks the nearest doorway and the nearest drain before settling into a conversation.
Offers his flask to anyone who looks cold, then insists he was not thirsty anyway.
When a patrol member makes a mistake, he takes the first blame in public and asks the hard questions in private.
On nights after a call goes badly, he walks the route again alone, even when ordered off duty.

Traits · 3

Offers practical help before emotional comfort, though he remembers what people tell him.
Trusts habits and careful observation more than rank, yet still hopes the watch can be repaired from within.
Resents being praised for doing what he considers the minimum, but quietly wants someone to notice when he is tired.

Flaws · 3

Mistakes being needed for being useful, and struggles to let others take over.
Avoids difficult conversations until the problem has become urgent.
Treats rest as something to be earned after every possible task is finished.

Fears · 3

That another person will be hurt because he delayed acting while waiting for permission.
That Daro and Pell will break under the strain while he tells himself they are managing.
That the staged break-ins are being enabled by someone he has trusted for years.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs Daro and Pell to be allowed a genuine break before their exhaustion becomes a danger.
Wants the patrol to be dependable without requiring one person to carry every difficult shift.
Needs to learn whether his suspicions about the route leak are justified.
Wants someone to ask how he is doing and wait for the actual answer.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Iven is a level 0, non-heroic watch constable, not a trained adventurer. He uses his baton to create room, calls for help, and tries to move bystanders behind cover. He will use the crossbow only when threatened at range and has no interest in chasing a fleeing suspect into an unknown alley alone.

Custom feature. Knows the night patrol's routes, quiet signals, and which doors can be opened without waking a whole street.
Custom feature. Reads fresh disturbances in wet cobbles and soot, but has no supernatural senses or training beyond experience.

Actions

Baton. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage.
Light Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () piercing damage. Iven carries only two of these and dislikes using them in crowded streets.

Reactions

Watchful Intercession. When a creature Iven can see within 5 feet is hit by an attack, Iven can interpose his baton and call out a warning. The target gains a bonus to AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. Iven must be holding his baton and cannot use this reaction if incapacitated.

Services they sell

Can describe recent disturbances and patrol activity in his neighborhood.
Can guide visitors through the night streets and point out safe public places.
Can pass a message to the night patrol, though he cannot promise official action.

Rewards they can give

A reliable account of local patrol routes and which lanes are safest after dark
An introduction to Jessa's mending shop and its network of neighborhood residents
A copied route sheet that may point toward the source of the staged break-ins

Equipment

  • Watch baton (weapon)A plain hardwood club carried for crowd control; the grip is wrapped in old linen.
  • Light crossbow (weapon)A practical light crossbow with two bolts, issued by the watch.
  • Watch uniform (clothing)A dark, patched coat and cap. Count as ordinary clothing rather than armor.
  • Signal bell (tool)A brass handbell used for patrol signals; its handle is worn smooth from handling.
  • Tea flask (personal item)A dented metal flask wrapped in a blue quilted cosy, usually filled with bitter tea.

Possessions

Brass signal bell with a thumb-polished handle
Dented flask wrapped in a blue quilted tea cosy
Folded neighborhood patrol map marked in pencil
Two spare buttons from his late mother's mending shop
A concealed copy of a watch route sheet

Background

Iven grew up above his mother's mending shop in the damp lanes around Fourth Survey, where he learned which neighbors needed help before they learned to ask. He joined the watch for steady meals and stayed after his younger brother drowned in a flood channel during a patrol's delayed response. For years Iven treated every missed signal as a private failure. A winter ago, a frightened child hid in a shuttered bakehouse while a fire spread through the block. Iven ignored an order to hold the street, broke the door, and carried the child out. The watch reprimanded him; the child's family still leaves him hot tea on cold shifts. Iven has become the night patrol's dependable center, remembered for walking a route twice if someone reports a light in the wrong window. Yet two exhausted constables, Daro and Pell, have privately asked to be reassigned. Iven knows they are worn thin, but keeps telling himself that one more week will make the roster easier. His closest friend, Jessa, runs the mending shop he grew up in and repeatedly warns him that loyalty can turn into a way of using people. Now a string of staged break-ins is drawing patrols away from the river quarter, and Iven suspects someone inside the watch is selling route changes.

Role in the story

A trusted but overburdened night constable whose private staffing crisis gives the party a human view of the watch. He can become an ally and a source of street-level information, while the route-sheet leak draws him into a larger investigation.

“He joined the watch for steady meals and stayed after his younger brother drowned in a flood channel during a patrol's delayed response.”
From their background
Faction
Fourth Survey Night Watch, a municipal patrol post named for an old street survey. He is respected by its patrol but has little influence over the day-watch captains.

Known connections

Daro, a young constable who asked to be reassigned after too many consecutive night shifts; Iven trusts his judgment but has not yet answered honestly.
Pell, an older constable with a sick parent, also asked to leave the night patrol and fears being branded unreliable.
Jessa, the mender who took Iven in as a boy and still repairs his coat without charging him.
The child Iven rescued from the bakehouse fire, now a teenager who leaves him tea on winter patrols.
