Voice

A dry, weathered voice with a little rasp at the ends of long sentences, shaped by cold roads and years of calling instructions across wind. Her breath stays steady when she is calm; under pressure, one sharp catch breaks through before she sets her jaw and speaks with deliberate precision.

She speaks in short, sturdy sentences with the clipped clarity of someone used to being heard over rain, wagons, and frightened horses. She uses road and workshop vocabulary, and often asks a question before offering an opinion. When rattled, her breath catches high once, and her consonants become harder and more precise.

Speech patterns

Uses plain, practical questions: "How many doors? How many children? Which way does the wind carry smoke?"
Names the cost of a plan before its glory.
Uses old road and workshop sayings, usually to puncture a boast rather than to comfort.
When she is fond of someone, she gives them a task instead of a compliment.

How to play them

Treat Cwenna as a capable neighbor, not a legend. She responds to specific plans, honest uncertainty, and concern for ordinary people. Offer to help investigate the quarry and she will test the party with practical questions before trusting them.

Goal

Determine what is in the quarry and protect the settlement without repeating the mistakes that made her famous.

Motivation

To prove that caution and courage can coexist, and that protecting people does not always mean killing what frightens them.

Appearance

Cwenna is a compact, broad-backed old woman whose movements are economical rather than slow. Her hands are wide and ridged with pale calluses, the knuckles swollen from decades of sword hilt, reins, and cold-weather work; when she counts something, she taps each thumb joint with the opposite forefinger. Her iron-gray hair is braided close to her scalp and pinned with a small copper dragon scale. The unexpected detail is a pair of bright yellow knitted socks, visible above her boots, which she made herself and insists are warmer than any enchanted gear. She gives the impression of a door that has been shut against a storm for a very long time.

Clothing

A dark green wool coat patched at both elbows, a boiled-leather cuirass beneath it, sturdy brown trousers, scuffed knee-high boots, and unmistakably cheerful yellow knitted socks. Her sword belt is old but carefully maintained.

Body language

She stands with her weight evenly placed and her chin tipped slightly forward, as though listening for movement through stone. Her hands are rarely still: they test a seam, roll a coin, or feel the edge of a tool. When frightened, her breath catches once high in her chest, then she deliberately exhales through pursed lips and becomes very still.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Cwenna is blunt about danger but tender with the people who have to live through it. She hates being treated as a monument, yet misses the clarity of a road where the next task was obvious. In a crisis she becomes brisk and commanding; in a quiet room she is self-conscious, funny, and prone to changing the subject when thanked.

Quirks

Taps each thumb joint while counting, even when there is nothing to count.
Names tools after the people who taught her to use them, then argues with the tools aloud.
Leaves a saucer of water outside the workshop door for any animal passing through, including dragons in theory.
Turns every chair so she can see both the entrance and the nearest window.

Habits

Checks the exits and the ceiling before sitting down, a habit from years of fighting creatures larger than buildings.
Repairs straps, hems, and loose buckles during conversations, especially when she is worried.
If someone boasts about killing a monster, she asks what happened to the people who lived nearby.
Avoids drawing her sword in a crowded room, even when insulted.

Traits · 3

Practical to the point of seeming grim, but secretly delighted by small comforts.
Skeptical of grand promises, yet willing to risk herself for a stranger who has no better option.
Protective of young people, though she resents being expected to become their parent.

Flaws · 3

She takes responsibility for danger even when others are better placed to decide.
She can mistake hesitation for cowardice when frightened.
She withholds painful history until it becomes relevant at the worst possible time.

Fears · 3

That her judgment will fail at the one moment someone trusts it.
That the quarry eggs are harmless and she will help turn fear into another needless killing.
That retirement has made her brave only in stories.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants the truth about the quarry eggs before fear decides their fate.
Needs to trust someone else with a dangerous decision.
Wants Tegan to choose a life freely, even if it is not the one she imagined for them.

Combat

AC 17 · HP 68 · 30 feet

She keeps a shield between danger and the least protected person, studies a foe's rhythm, and attacks joints, eyes, or wings only when she has a clear opening. Against a dragon-sized enemy she seeks cover, uses terrain, and prioritizes breaking line of sight over looking heroic. She withdraws if the fight risks bystanders.

Custom feature. Dragonwise patience. After studying a creature for a round, Cwenna can identify one practical weakness in its habits, such as a favored approach or a tell before it attacks.
Custom feature. Retired, not rusty. Once per short rest, when reduced to 0 hit points, she can drop to 1 hit point instead, then immediately move up to half her speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Actions

Old Dragon-Slayer's Sword. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 () slashing damage, or 10 () if wielded with two hands.
Heavy Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 80/320 ft., one target. Hit: 7 () piercing damage. She keeps the bow close, but dislikes wasting arrows.
Multiattack. Cwenna makes two attacks with her sword. She uses this only when the fight is serious, or when someone threatens a person under her protection.

Reactions

Shield Deflection. When a creature Cwenna can see hits her with a melee attack, she adds 2 to her AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. She must be wielding her shield.
Opportunity Attack. When an enemy moves out of her reach, Cwenna may make one melee weapon attack against it.

A bundle of yellow yarn and unfinished socks.

Background

Cwenna grew up mending harness and cooking for drovers, until a young red dragon burned the summer road and killed her older brother. She joined a band of adventurers not from a taste for glory, but because she could not bear to wait for someone else to act. Over the next thirty years she helped bring down three dragons: a red that terrorized the road, a green that poisoned a valley's wells, and a white that nested above a mining settlement. The work cost her friends and left her with a distrust of celebratory songs about violence. After the third dragon fell, she retired to repair tack and sharpen tools in a small workshop. Her former companion, the cartographer Brial, still sends maps and increasingly worried letters; Cwenna's apprentice, Tegan, wants to inherit the shop but not the sword. Now a clutch of eggs has been found in a collapsed quarry, and the village council is arguing over whether to destroy them or wait for proof of danger. Cwenna has begun packing her old kit again, though she tells everyone she is only going to look.

Role in the story

A retired legend who can offer hard-won expertise, practical help, and a moral counterweight to easy solutions. She may become an ally in the quarry investigation, but will not let the party mistake age for helplessness.
