Iven
Iven
At the table
“a turn with bad footing.”
Voice
His voice has a dry, breathy edge from cold air and years of projecting over hand drums. Consonants land cleanly, as if he is calling steps to dancers; his laughter catches in quick little bursts. When angry, he speaks faster and more plainly, not softly, and makes each instruction sound like a count that must be obeyed.
His speech has the clipped clarity of someone used to calling directions over drums, wind, and market noise. He puts a little weight on the first beat of a phrase, then lets the rest run quickly, with occasional dry pauses for comic effect. When worried, he stops ornamenting his words and names exactly what needs doing.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet him with practical kindness rather than praise. He warms quickly to people who help without making a show of it. If asked for help, he will offer a useful service first and ask questions later; if confronted about the troupe's money, he becomes frank and accepts responsibility, but bristles if someone dismisses the villagers he helped.
Goal
Find the missing verse of his mother's composition, repay his former troupe, and earn a place among them again without asking them to forget what he did.
Motivation
He wants his art to make people safer and less alone, but he also wants the troupe that raised him to forgive him.
Appearance
Iven is a small, green-and-white feathered Avali with a long, expressive tail and a runner's compact balance. His white throat plumage breaks into layered, moss-green feathers over his shoulders and back, each with a fine, downy edge that catches dust like frost. He moves in little, exact weight shifts, as if every floor might be a stage and every stage might give way. He takes up less space than his bright costume suggests, then suddenly fills a room with turning arms and a tail that draws broad commas in the air. The detail people remember is his battered wooden practice spoon, tucked into his sash like a dancer's lucky charm, which he handles with the solemn care of a sacred relic.
Clothing
A traditional dancer's outfit: a sleeveless white top fitted close to his torso, with cyan piping repaired in three visibly different shades of thread, and a layered green skirt split for easy movement. Its hem is weighted with tiny bells, though he has removed several so he can move quietly when needed. A wide cyan sash holds his instrument picks, travel papers, and the wooden practice spoon. One shoulder is covered by a small, carefully mended white mantle that belonged to his mother.
Body language
He keeps his shoulders slightly folded in crowded rooms, tail curled close to his legs. On a stage or when taking charge, he opens his arms and uses his tail as a counterweight, making his small frame seem suddenly broad. His ears angle toward whoever is speaking, though his eyes often track doors and windows.

Personality
12 traits and drivesIven is generous but not selfless: he gives freely, then quietly resents being treated as if generosity costs him nothing. In familiar company he is quick with teasing observations and small acts of care; when danger rises, his humor falls away and he becomes brisk, exact, and difficult to distract. He craves an audience but dislikes being treated as a hero, and he can be stubbornly proud of choices he knows hurt people.

Combat
AC 14 · HP 33 · 30 ft.Iven avoids trading blows. He uses Dissonant Whispers or Thunderwave to break up clustered enemies, keeps allies moving with Bardic Inspiration, and retreats behind sturdier companions. He favors cover and uses his speed and dance-trained footwork to stay out of reach. He saves Healing Word for an ally who falls, rather than spending his action to approach them.

Background
Iven grew up among Avali caravan performers who crossed the high passes between market towns, dancing on packed snow and playing for innkeepers who paid in meals as often as coin. His mother, Saran, taught him the old turning steps; his uncle, Boro, taught him how to repair instruments and never trust a bridge that had not been tested by a mule. At nineteen, Iven performed at a winter treaty feast in the town of One Stove, named for the night a whole district crowded around a single surviving hearth during a blizzard. A panicked horse broke through the crowd. Iven abandoned his planned solo, used his bells and a sharp, steady rhythm to guide people toward an open passage, and learned that performance could be more than applause. A young courier, Dema, was injured in the crush and still walks with a limp; she remains his closest friend and the one person who can tell when his cheer is an act. Iven now travels between settlements, collecting songs and helping stranded people find safe routes. His troupe split after he spent their shared emergency fund on winter blankets for a pass village. His former partner, Ulan, calls that theft; Iven calls it the only choice he could live with. He is trying to repay the troupe while quietly searching for a missing verse from his mother's last composition, which she left unfinished before her death.
