Oskari
Oskari
At the table
Voice
A clear, slightly rasped voice with the dry edge of furnace air. Oskari projects from the chest and keeps a steady pace, shaped by years of speaking over tools and explaining measurements to tired workers. Excitement makes their sentences accelerate; anger makes them more direct and emphatic, not softer.
Oskari speaks in clear, work-worn phrases, often naming the object they are looking at before describing what it means. They interrupt themself to correct measurements, not to dominate a conversation. When urgency spikes, their words become clipped and command-like, carrying the rasp of years around hot furnaces and the habit of being heard over hammering.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet curiosity with warmth and practical demonstrations. Oskari shares reliable findings readily, but becomes evasive about private notes if asked to surrender them. Earn their trust by treating safety and urgency as compatible rather than opposing principles.
Goal
Build a practical warning method that lets armorers recognize dangerous void pressure before a breach begins.
Motivation
They want to turn frightening anomalies into measurable warnings without letting institutional caution become another name for inaction.
Appearance
Oskari has an alert, weathered face framed by wiry hair, and moves with the brisk, slightly forward-tilted gait of someone always trying to catch up with an idea. They smell unmistakably of hot iron, lamp oil, and the sharp mineral tang of void residue; Oskari knows, and keeps a little dish of crushed juniper at their desk that never quite wins. Their broad hands are mapped with tiny pale pressure marks from years of holding calipers and test plates, the nails permanently dark at the edges. Unexpectedly, they carry a pocketful of sugared fennel seeds and offer them to nervous visitors with grave ceremony.
Clothing
A charcoal work coat with a high collar, leather elbow patches, and a removable apron scored with measurement marks. A tidy scholar's sash is tucked under the apron, as if Oskari considers it a tool that gets in the way.
Body language
Oskari leans toward whoever is speaking, fingers sketching invisible measurements in the air. When impatient, they set objects down in a precise line and tap the smallest one twice. They rarely sit with their back to a workshop door.

Personality
11 traits and drivesWarm and genuinely curious in conversation, Oskari asks follow-up questions as if every person might reveal a missing piece of the world. They are generous with time when someone is learning, yet impatient with ritual when lives are at stake. In a quiet workshop they can be methodical to the point of fussiness; during an emergency they become brisk, directive, and surprisingly willing to break rules. Later, when the danger has passed, they revisit the rules and the harm their haste may have caused.

Background
Oskari grew up at a riverside forge where armor was repaired faster than it could be replaced. Their first lesson in void behavior came during the breach at the Silt Ford: a suit of plate folded inward around its wearer though nothing had struck it. Oskari ignored a supervisor's demand to wait for a sanctioned measuring rite, used a chain and a cracked pressure gauge to pull the injured smith clear, and saved a life. The rescue also left them convinced that delay dressed up as protocol can be fatal. They joined the Quiet Anvil as a researcher, became its senior scholar of void behavior, and now advise armorers who work near unstable sites. Oskari remains close to the rescued smith, now an old friend who distrusts Oskari's experiments, and to a former apprentice who left after being asked to test an unsafe plate. The council has forbidden unsupervised trials. Oskari keeps making them anyway, while trying to establish which void events are warnings and which are the first moments of a disaster.
Role in the story
A generous research contact whose observations can help the party anticipate void hazards. Their unsanctioned notes may also draw the characters into a conflict between urgent safety work and the Quiet Anvil's responsibility to prevent reckless experimentation.
“The rescue also left them convinced that delay dressed up as protocol can be fatal.”
- Faction
- Senior scholar of the Quiet Anvil, an independent order of armorers, researchers, and custodians.
