Voice

A dry, carrying voice with a slight rasp from years of shouting over steam and working in soot. Their consonants are crisp, their vowels plainly shaped, and a faint mechanical buzz enters their words when they are tired. Their name, Jessa, lands on an unexpected second-beat stress.

Jessa speaks with clipped clarity, like someone accustomed to being heard over steam, wheels, and alarms. Their phrasing is precise and practical, threaded with railway terminology learned from a mechanic's family. They favor direct instructions over grand declarations, and their humor arrives dry and well-timed.

Speech patterns

Uses precise terms for doors, routes, and procedures, even when discussing emotional matters.
Addresses passengers as 'traveler' until they learn a name, then remembers it.
Gives commands as short, complete instructions: 'Hands clear. Step back. Tell me what you saw.'
Uses dry humor to defuse fear, but becomes blunt when someone endangers the crew.

How to play them

Jessa offers help readily when it serves passenger safety, but expects people to follow clear instructions aboard the train. They respect competence and honest admissions of risk. To earn their trust, explain what you need, what it could endanger, and how you intend to help. Threats to passengers end the negotiation immediately.

Goal

Discover the source of the signal from the abandoned spur and decide whether the Rookery can safely follow it.

Motivation

Keep the Rookery and everyone aboard it safe, while proving that a railway can move people without reducing them to cargo.

Appearance

Jessa stands with the balanced stillness of someone accustomed to a floor that lurches beneath them. Their warm umber skin is finely stippled with soot that never quite washes from the creases around their knuckles, and their blunt, strong jaw shifts slightly when they listen, as if measuring a mechanism by its vibration. Their teeth are unusually even and pale; when they laugh, they show them all at once, a startlingly open expression from someone so exacting. Two ridged horns sweep back from their temples, polished smooth where a lifetime of hats and doorframes have rubbed them. Their tail curls around a brass whistle when they need both hands free. They move in brisk, economical steps, then stop so completely that passengers sometimes mistake them for a posted sign. The unexpected detail: every few weeks they quietly mend and repaint the train's little collection of chipped toy animals, which they keep in a locked desk drawer.

Clothing

A deep green conductor's coat with reinforced elbows, brass toggles, and a high collar that clears their horns. They wear soot-dark trousers, insulated gloves tucked into the belt, and a battered cap fitted with a sliding lens for reading the engine's gauges.

Body language

They stand squarely in doorways, claiming the space without raising their voice. Their tail hooks around a rail during jolts, their thumb taps a steady four-count on the wrench handle, and their jaw tightens when someone calls a passenger a fare or a number. When pleased, they lean forward as if inviting the other person to inspect a clever piece of engineering.

Their tail curls around a brass whistle when both hands are occupied.
They habitually listen to machinery with one palm resting against its casing.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Jessa is exacting about safety and unexpectedly tender toward people who feel stranded. They enjoy a clever argument when the stakes are low, but become procedural and immovable when lives are at risk. With their crew they are brisk, teasing, and protective; with officials they are formally courteous until a rule threatens a passenger, then they stop pretending the rule is reasonable. They crave companionship yet keep their grief and guilt locked away as if both were dangerous components.

Alignment
Lawful neutral, with a stubbornly humane streak

Quirks

Taps four beats on any surface before opening a door, even in buildings nowhere near a train.
Keeps a pocketful of mismatched buttons and uses them to explain complicated routes on a table.
Apologizes to machines before taking them apart, then scolds them while repairing them.
Counts passengers by touch on the brass beads sewn inside their coat cuff.
Collects children's drawings of the train and pretends not to know where they are displayed.

Habits

Checks door latches, window catches, and passenger counts whenever a conversation becomes uncomfortable.
Will stop the train for a single frightened child, but makes no exceptions for smugglers who endanger other passengers.
Keeps a private tally of promises made aboard the train and follows up on them at later stations.
When exhausted, polishes the brass signal lantern until it reflects their face clearly.

Traits · 4

Treats a timetable as a promise to the people waiting at the station, not as a suggestion.
Enjoys wordplay and mechanical puzzles, but dislikes being praised for doing what they consider their duty.
Gives people a second chance more readily than a second warning.
When anxious, becomes exceptionally kind in practical ways while refusing to discuss why.

Flaws · 3

Treats uncertainty as a maintenance problem and can become controlling when events cannot be scheduled.
Carries old guilt alone rather than letting the people affected by their choices speak for themselves.
Can mistake disobedience for danger, especially when someone acts without telling them.

Fears · 3

Having to choose which passengers deserve saving when the train is in danger.
That the mysterious signal from the abandoned spur is coming from someone they left behind.
Becoming so devoted to order that they stop noticing who their rules hurt.

Wants and needs · 4

Find out who or what is sending the signal from the abandoned spur.
Keep the arcane drive from being seized or dismantled before its nature is understood.
Hear their former mentor's honest judgment without turning it into an argument about procedure.
Learn to ask the crew for help before a problem becomes an emergency.

Combat

AC 20 · HP 123 · 30 ft.

Jessa first uses cover and the train's layout to separate threats from passengers. They protect allies with shield or absorb elements, restrain clustered enemies with web, and use the Lantern Cannon from behind the Steel Defender. They avoid lethal force when a target can be disarmed or contained, but will use Arcane Jolt decisively to stop anyone threatening the train's crew.

Background

Jessa learned the railway by crawling under it. Their mother, a tiefling brake mechanic, brought them up in the cramped service compartments of the long-distance locomotive called the Rookery, where Jessa learned to identify faults by smell and vibration before they could read a timetable. At nineteen, a sabotaged coupling failed during a night crossing. Jessa had seconds to choose between stopping the train in a ravine or diverting it through an abandoned mining spur. They chose the spur, saving the passengers but wrecking the engine and leaving the settlement at its end without its only winter supply shipment. The blame became a scar on their conscience, not their face. Years later they rebuilt the Rookery with an experimental arcane drive and became its conductor, insisting that nobody aboard would ever again be treated as expendable cargo. Their former mentor, Sesa, now runs a repair shed at the far end of the route and believes Jessa's strict rules have become another kind of cage. Jessa's younger sibling, Tzel, works as a courier and keeps asking for passage to places the railway authorities have forbidden. Now the drive has begun responding to a signal from the abandoned spur, though no telegraph line reaches it.

Role in the story

A powerful ally, gatekeeper, or antagonist whose authority over the train is real and immediate. Jessa can transport the party into dangerous regions, impose consequences for putting passengers at risk, and draw them into the mystery of the abandoned spur.
