Gemma Iron-Valve
Artificer 6
Gemma Iron-Valve
Species
Rock Gnome
Appearance
A stout rock gnome with the restless energy of a kettle just before it whistles. Her bright hazel eyes are magnified by brass-rimmed lenses that are usually flipped onto her forehead, leaving faint red grooves above her brows. Dark hair is tied back with a loop of braided copper wire, though loose strands constantly escape and cling to the oil on her cheeks. Fine iron dust settles permanently into the creases of her knuckles, and her hands smell of hot metal, pine resin, and bitter lamp oil. She moves in abrupt bursts, crouching without warning, pivoting on one heel, or leaning so close to a machine that her nose nearly touches the gears. Her silhouette is stout and work-worn, yet her expression is almost delicately scholarly. The unexpected contradiction is that her battered utility belt contains a tiny porcelain teacup, kept spotless and wrapped in velvet.
“Fast, precise, and full of clipped technical comparisons. Her sentences become excited and richly descriptive when discussing mechanisms, but flatten into dry sarcasm when discussing authority.”

Distinguishing Features
Braided copper wire securing her dark hair
Permanent iron dust embedded in the lines of her hands
Brass magnifying lenses with one cracked glass pane
A soot-shaped birthmark beneath her left ear
A spotless porcelain teacup concealed inside her tool belt
One boot heel is fitted with a tiny spring that clicks when she walks
Voice
“A bright, rasping alto with a musical rhythm when excited and a dry metallic edge when tired. She can project over machinery without shouting, yet whispers whenever she suspects the walls are listening.”
Clothing
A heavy, multi-pocketed canvas work tunic reinforced with mismatched leather patches, soot-dark trousers, thick boots with copper toe caps, a sturdy utility belt loaded with pipe wrenches and oil flasks, fingerless gloves, a weatherproof hood, and brass magnifying lenses resting on her forehead.
Body Language
Gemma rarely stands still. Her fingers tap rhythms against metal, her head tilts toward distant clicks, and her shoulders hunch protectively around damaged machinery. When lying, she becomes unnaturally motionless and grips the porcelain teacup hidden in her belt.
