Species

Forest Gnome

Appearance

Pip Silt-Walker is a small, soft-spoken forest gnome with warm earth-toned skin, gentle amber eyes, and faint worry lines etched beneath them like tiny dried riverbeds. His unkempt brown hair escapes in damp curls from beneath a practical felt cap, whose brim has been repaired with green thread and a fishhook. He moves with a careful, rolling gait that seems slow until the ground becomes treacherous, at which point he glides over roots, rubble, and slick clay with startling confidence. His hands are broad-knuckled and permanently dark beneath the nails from years of handling wet soil. He leaves an impression of harmless domesticity, like a kindly groundskeeper, but his gaze constantly measures distances, shadows, and the load-bearing strength of every ceiling. The unexpected contradiction is his smile, which is bright, almost boyish, even when he is discussing cave-ins, corpses, or the names of people he failed.

Distinguishing Features

A cluster of heavy brass keys that jingle softly with every step, except when Pip is frightened, when he grips them tightly and makes no sound.

A thin white scar along his left cheek from a splintered burrow support.

Permanent reddish-brown clay stains around his fingertips and the edges of his ears.

A felt cap repaired with a fishhook and green thread.

His left boot contains a hidden compartment for a single emergency map.

Voice

Soft and dry, like a lantern wick burning low. His laughter is surprisingly bright and brief, while his angry voice becomes quieter rather than louder.

Clothing

A well-worn dust-caked canvas coat lined with secret map-pockets, a patched ochre shirt, reinforced trousers, sturdy boots caked in damp clay, fingerless gloves, a green felt cap, and several heavy brass key-rings hanging from his belt. His coat smells faintly of smoke, wet leaves, lamp oil, and mushrooms.

Body Language

Pip keeps his shoulders slightly hunched as if expecting a low ceiling. He touches his brass keys when anxious, angles his body toward exits, and frequently crouches to inspect footprints or disturbed soil. When relaxed, he rocks gently on his heels and cups both hands around a mug. When ashamed, he becomes almost unnaturally still.
