Nessa Root-Echo
Bard 3, Rootlistener Initiate
Nessa Root-Echo
Species
Forest Gnome
Appearance
Nessa Root-Echo is a slight forest gnome who moves with the careful quiet of a moth landing on paper. Her large expressive ears are fitted with delicate copper resonance hoops, each one etched with tiny root patterns that tremble when someone nearby lies. Her wide silver-grey eyes track invisible vibrations in the air rather than faces, giving the unsettling impression that she is watching the sound around a person. Earth-brown hair falls in narrow braids threaded with silver acoustic wire, and the wires click faintly against one another when she turns her head. Her hands are small, callused, and permanently darkened beneath the nails by conductive soil paste. She leaves behind an impression of stillness, yet tiny objects near her often quiver as if remembering a distant footstep. The unexpected contradiction is her smile: when genuine, it is broad, bright, and almost childlike, completely at odds with her grave, haunted manner.
“A low, gentle voice with unusually exact diction. She rarely raises it, yet her words carry through crowded rooms as if the air has been tuned to her frequency.”

Distinguishing Features
Copper resonance hoops etched with root patterns that tremble near strong emotions
Silver acoustic wire braided through earth-brown hair
Silver-grey eyes that track vibrations instead of eye contact
A listening horn lined with velvet and copper threading
Dark conductive soil permanently staining the skin beneath her fingernails
A faint rhythmic pulse that can sometimes be felt through objects she has recently touched
Voice
“A hushed contralto with a faint chiming overtone, as if each sentence passes through a hidden glass tube before reaching the listener.”
Clothing
A lightweight sound-absorbing canvas tunic layered over a moss-brown undershirt, fitted trousers reinforced at the knees, soft-soled boots, a weatherproof gray-green cloak, and a belt carrying tuning keys, wax plugs, chalk, and sealed soil paste. Her clothing is deliberately free of dangling metal except for her resonance equipment.
Body Language
Nessa keeps her shoulders slightly hunched and angles one ear toward whoever is speaking. Her fingers tap silent rhythms against her horn, and she often turns her head several degrees away from a person to hear the emotional resonance beneath their words. When she trusts someone, she stands unusually close and allows the copper hoops in her ears to touch their clothing.
