Shen Qi
Shen Qi
At the table
“s tribal markings, she says,”
Voice
A dry, lightly rasping voice with a faint hiss at the edges of sibilants, as though her words have brushed past scales and dried reeds. She speaks at an even pace and articulates like someone accustomed to giving instructions over the clatter of a mortar. Anger makes her more exact and more forceful, not softer: she names the consequence, then gives the listener one chance to choose differently.
She speaks in measured, compact phrases shaped by years of explaining treatments to frightened people and negotiating across cultural divides. Her consonants are dry and lightly rasped, as if each word has passed over a reed. She uses little slang, remembers precise symptom descriptions, and delivers uncomfortable facts without theatrical emphasis.

How to play them
Offer a useful observation or small treatment before asking anything personal. Shen Qi warms to people who respect consent and admit uncertainty. She responds to pressure with precise questions and a calm refusal, but will bargain if the spring or a patient's life is at stake. She recognizes Glenn's tribal markings before he speaks and waits to see whether he chooses to acknowledge the connection.
Goal
Find and neutralize the source contaminating the shrine-spring before the next dry season, without surrendering control of the remedy to anyone seeking a weapon.
Motivation
To preserve life without pretending that every life can be saved, and to make sure powerful people do not turn healing into another form of control.
Appearance
Shen Qi has the dry, fine-scaled face of an old serpent, with faint jade stippling at her temples and folds of skin that gather like pressed leaves at her throat. Her long neck inclines toward whoever is speaking, as if she is listening for a pulse beneath their words. She stands with her weight balanced over the balls of her feet, utterly still until she moves; then she glides in short, exact steps that make her seem to have crossed a room without traversing it. Her hands are broad and scale-smooth, usually stained with the brown-green residue of crushed herbs. The unexpected detail is that she wears a tiny child's wooden toy, a lopsided painted duck, tied to her belt with medicinal twine. Fully oxidised verdigris clasps secure her satchel and cloak, their green crust polished only where her fingers habitually touch them. She leaves the impression of a kindly physician who has already decided which of your symptoms are worth saving.
Clothing
Layered linen and weather-darkened robes, patched at the elbows and hem. A waxed herb apron hangs beneath a travel cloak fastened with fully oxidised verdigris clasps. The fabric smells of dried mint, damp earth, and smoke.
Body language
She balances lightly on the balls of her feet, shoulders rounded as though sheltering a small flame. While listening, she tilts her head and presses one thumb to the nearest verdigris clasp. Her stillness feels attentive rather than relaxed.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesShen Qi is genuinely patient with pain, but impatient with self-deception. She can make a frightened stranger feel carefully attended to, then unsettle them by naming the exact thing they are avoiding. In a crisis she becomes brisk and decisive; in private she is sentimental about small, useless objects and embarrassed by the fact. She distrusts grand promises but quietly keeps her own.
- Alignment
- Neutral, guided by practical compassion and a conviction that nature's remedies and poisons are two faces of the same truth.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 38 · 30 ft.Shen Qi avoids a fair fight. She begins with entangle or spike growth to divide opponents, uses healing word to keep an ally standing, and relies on thorn whip or produce flame at range. If cornered, she uses barkskin, takes cover, and shifts into a sturdy beast. She will use poison only when someone has already made lethal intent plain, and will try to disable rather than kill.

Background
Shen Qi was raised among yuan-ti who prized useful knowledge more than tenderness. She learned to identify plants by scent and to measure remedies by the tremor in a patient's hand. In her middle years she left her kin after a dispute over a captive village: she secretly treated the villagers rather than let a fever become a convenient purge. Her mentor, an old healer called Nadezh, helped her flee and later died in a flood that carried away their first traveling dispensary. Shen Qi still trades remedies and preserved roots with Glenn's tribe. Years ago, she treated a wounded scout from the tribe and learned to recognize their distinctive markings. She recognizes those markings on Glenn before he says a word, though she does not expose how much she knows about his people. These days she is trying to keep a local spring from being poisoned by runoff from an abandoned serpent shrine, while an impatient herb-gatherer named Pavo wants her to sell a potent sleeping draught to a caravan guard captain. Shen Qi refuses to let the draught become a weapon, but the spring's failing water supply makes every refusal costly.
Role in the story
A wary healer, source of practical knowledge, and potential guide to the spring's contamination. Shen Qi can connect the party to Glenn's tribe, but her discretion and unresolved past may complicate that alliance.
“She learned to identify plants by scent and to measure remedies by the tremor in a patient's hand.”
- Faction
- An independent apothecary who trades with Glenn's tribe and maintains cordial, wary ties with nearby settlements. She has no formal allegiance to her former yuan-ti community.
