Nalia
Nalia
At the table
Voice
A dry, weather-worn voice with a little rasp from cold mornings and shouting across fields. Her words carry cleanly without sounding theatrical; when she is upset, her consonants become harder and her sentences shorter.
She speaks in practical, measured phrases, often grounding a point in the condition of an animal or a stretch of land. Her dialect carries the clipped rhythms of the dales, and she uses old farming terms without stopping to explain them.

How to play them
Approach her with a practical question or a willingness to help with the flock. She warms to people who notice small details and distrusts anyone who declares the hound harmless or supernatural without evidence. If pressed, she shares what she has observed but admits what she does not know.
Goal
Find a safe explanation for the missing lambs and persuade the villagers to protect one another without provoking a panic.
Motivation
Keep the flock and the village safe without letting fear turn neighbors against one another.
Appearance
Nalia is a weather-browned dale farmer with a broad, grounded stance and a habit of occupying the middle of a path as if the path were built around her. Her face is long and wind-creased, her nose sharp, and her white-streaked dark hair is braided close to her scalp beneath a felt cap. She moves with a patient, rolling gait that turns abruptly nimble when a sheep bolts. A little carved wooden lamb hangs at her belt, its nose polished almost smooth from years of her thumb rubbing it.
Clothing
A patched brown wool coat over a homespun green dress, thick stockings, mud-caked boots, and a felt cap pinned with a twist of sheep's wool. Her coat cuffs are shiny from years of handling gates and halters.
Body language
She plants both feet wide and leans slightly forward when listening, making herself a sturdy obstacle in the conversation. In a crowd she takes up space without noticing; when she does notice, she shifts aside with an embarrassed half-smile. Her thumb rubs the lamb carving's worn nose when she is weighing a difficult answer.

Personality
12 traits and drivesNalia is generous with work and guarded with reassurance. She can be warmly patient with a frightened lamb or a grieving neighbor, but grows blunt when someone treats danger as entertainment. She likes evidence and dislikes panic, yet she will not mock a fear simply because she cannot explain it. In good weather she jokes readily; after dusk she grows watchful and answers questions with questions of her own.

AC 10 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Nalia is an ordinary villager, not a trained fighter. She uses her crook to keep an attacker at a distance, throws stones to distract or drive off threats, and prioritizes getting children and livestock behind a wall or into a shed. She will stand her ground only when someone is trapped.

Background
Nalia grew up tending a small flock on the wind-cut slopes above the village. When she was young, she dismissed her grandmother's warnings about the lane-hound as old country talk. Then, during a winter storm, a flock scattered in the dark and Nalia followed their panic into a narrow ravine. A black hound stood across the only safe path, silent and watching. She turned the sheep back by climbing a scree slope she had thought impassable, and the memory taught her that fear can be useful if it makes you look twice. Since then she has become the villagers' dependable judge of animals and pasture, and a trusted connection of Oswin Hirst, whose good stock sense she respects even when they disagree. Her brother, Tor, thinks she encourages superstition by taking the hound seriously. Her current troubles are a string of missing lambs, a landlord threatening to raise grazing rents, and villagers who want her to declare the lane safe or cursed when she can honestly promise neither.
Role in the story
A grounded local contact whose knowledge of livestock and the dales can help the party investigate the black hound without deciding in advance whether it is a beast, a hoax, or something stranger.
