Grandmother Kesh
Grandmother Kesh
At the table
Voice
A dry, chest-resonant voice with a faint rasp, like breath moving through a clay flute packed with dust. When she speaks a name correctly, its last syllable seems to carry a second voice behind hers.
Her words have the clipped, deliberate rhythm of someone who once called names over wind and battle noise. She leaves a small pause before every important name, giving listeners time to recognize it. Her vocabulary is practical, full of terms for burial, witness, and obligation.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Ask the characters to state exactly what they intend to do to the tomb and why. Kesh listens carefully to evidence, especially old testimony, ritual wording, or proof that the ward protects the living without compelling the dead. She responds poorly to flattery and threats, but recognizes patience, accurate names, and a willingness to accept limits.
Goal
Convince the ancestral spirits that consecrating the tomb renews their intended ward rather than violating it.
Motivation
She wants the dead to be honored as people with choices, not treated as a weapon that can be reclaimed by the living.
Appearance
Grandmother Kesh has the compact outline of an elderly Goroth woman, but her body is made of soot-colored translucence threaded with pale lines like cracks in fired clay. Her jaw is broad and squared, and her teeth are unusually large, flat, and worn smooth; when she laughs, she works her mouth as if chewing tough dried meat. She keeps her silver hair combed into a severe coil even though the wind passes through it, and her ghostly silhouette moves with the measured, planted steps of someone used to crossing a battlefield without looking down. Her unexpected distinction is a tiny, precise braid tied around one strand of hair with a bright red thread, a fastidious touch amid her ash and ancient war gear.
Clothing
A faded wool robe under a ghostly vest of overlapping hide scales, all dulled by ash. Its seams bear the shapes of old repairs, and a small red thread is tied into her hair with almost ceremonial neatness.
Body language
She stands with her feet set as if braced against a shield wall. Her hands rest palm-down when listening, a signal that she will not reach for a weapon. When angered, she bares her worn, broad teeth and leans forward rather than raising her voice.

Background
In life, Grandmother Kesh was a keeper of war-dead names and a practical witness to the Goroth clan's treaties. When raiders threatened the valley, she argued that the ancestral totem should guard the living as well as the dead. The war-captain rejected her counsel and ordered the totem sealed in a tomb, believing its spirits should never be called to war again. Kesh helped bury the totem, then died during the retreat from the valley, leaving her testimony bound to it. Generations later, the tomb's ward is failing. Kesh believes consecrating it may renew the spirits' intended protection, but the dead remember the sealing as a promise that they would never again be used. She is divided between honoring that promise and correcting the living's dangerous misunderstanding. She still watches over the tomb's descendants and has been quietly guiding a young caretaker toward the truth, though the caretaker thinks the strange dreams are their own.
Role in the story
A witness and negotiator at the center of the quest The Brass Mirage. Kesh is a potential ally whose testimony can help the characters persuade the ancestral spirits that consecrating the tomb renews their intended ward rather than violating it.
