Dessa Farrow
Dessa Farrow
At the table
Voice
A dry, carrying voice with a grainy edge from years of calling over wind, wagon creak, and animal noise. She punches the first word of an instruction so it carries, then clips the rest into a rhythm her drivers can follow. Laughter comes out as a sudden bark, followed by a broad, tooth-showing grin.
She speaks in compact, workmanlike sentences shaped by giving directions over creaking wheels and frightened animals. Her vocabulary is full of road terms, but when she speaks to a child she uses theatrical flourishes and gives every paper character a different voice.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Dessa sizes up whether visitors are useful, frightened, or trying to sell her a story. She is direct with practical people and patient with the scared, but has little tolerance for anyone treating her crew as disposable. Earn her trust by offering specific help and accepting a fair share of risk.
Goal
Keep the Coalition's southern routes open without sacrificing her crew to political pressure or an impossible rescue.
Motivation
She believes a road is only worth keeping open if ordinary people can travel it and return. Protecting her crew is both a responsibility and a way to make amends for the people she could not save in the past.
Appearance
Dessa has the compact, weather-shaped look of someone who has spent decades outdoors: wind has roughened her cheeks and stippled her nose with fine red capillaries, while dust has settled permanently into the creases around her eyes. Her broad jaw shifts visibly when she chews, and her small, squared teeth show in a surprisingly delighted grin whenever a wagon finally rolls free of mud. She walks with a rolling, measured gait that keeps her balance on a moving deck or bucking cart. Her unexpected detail is a habit of carrying a tiny, immaculate folding paper theatre, which she unfolds for children during long halts.
Clothing
A sun-faded clay-red coat with reinforced elbows, a pale scarf wrapped against grit, fingerless work gloves, and a broad-brimmed hat weighted at the edges with little lead washers. Her boots are patched with mismatched leather and polished smooth at the toes.
Body language
She plants her feet as if the ground might shift under her, keeps one hand near a wagon rail or reins, and turns her whole torso toward whoever speaks. When calculating a risk, she rolls her jaw from side to side and taps two fingers against her thigh in the rhythm of a trotting team.

Background
Dessa grew up hauling salt and salvaged timber along the Coalition's southern trade roads. At nineteen, she was the youngest driver in a caravan that attempted the Glasswash, a dry basin where heat makes distant landmarks shimmer like water. A sudden sand squall scattered the wagons. Her mentor, Edda, ordered her to abandon a stalled cart and save the remaining teams; Dessa instead doubled back for the trapped passengers. They all survived, but the delay cost the caravan its contract and left Edda with a crushed leg. Edda never blamed her, though Dessa has never stopped wondering whether she risked everyone for one wagon too many. She eventually built her own crew by hiring people other masters dismissed as unreliable, and now leads a modest caravan through routes threatened by toll gangs, shifting dunes, and Coalition politics. Her closest confidante is Oona, a veteran outrider who thinks Dessa's loyalty can become recklessness. Dessa is currently trying to keep the route open while a rival coalition official presses her to divert her wagons and leave a remote settlement without supplies.
