At the table

Voice

Several voices speak through her at once, perfectly synchronized until emotion makes them drift apart. The sound has the dry, open-air projection of a herald addressing a vast crowd, with a faint crackle under forceful words. She does not become quieter when angry; her voice grows broader and the overlapping syllables strike like a single command.

Her voice sounds like several people speaking the same words in perfect unison, with a slight stagger on hard consonants. It carries the broad, dry resonance of someone accustomed to addressing crowds across open ground, and a faint crackle like kindling when her temper rises. She forms words precisely, as if each sentence were an official decree, but moments of grief make the overlapping voices fall out of alignment.

Speech patterns

Uses collective phrasing such as "we remember" even when describing a private feeling.
Turns questions about affection into questions about evidence: "What did the night give you that the morning did not?"
Speaks of destruction as if it were a correction or a cleansing, then occasionally slips into unexpectedly personal language.
Repeats a listener's final few words in unison with herself, as though testing their weight.

How to play them

Sephera initially offers a listener the chance to be important to her, framing obedience as a rare privilege. She responds well to specific acts of courage and to people who speak plainly about what they love in the world. Flattery buys a brief audience but deepens her suspicion if it sounds rehearsed. She reacts fiercely to mockery of her feelings, yet a genuine account of grief can make her hesitate. To redirect her, characters must offer a meaningful way for her to protect or be remembered by the living without ruling them.

Goal

Complete the solar wound beneath Kethra and burn the world to ash before the next great eclipse, leaving a silent creation that can never choose Lumis over her.

Motivation

Beneath her envy is a desperate wish to be cherished for herself rather than for what the sun provides. She has mistaken fear and dependence for the only forms of love that cannot be withdrawn.

Appearance

Sephera appears as a woman sculpted from noon sunlight, her outline too bright to hold still in the eye. Beneath the radiance, her skin is a deep, sun-kissed gold with a fine, dry sheen, and tiny flecks of light travel across it like sparks beneath glass. Her hair streams in layered reds, oranges, and yellows, each strand moving as if caught in an updraft even in still air. Four immense wings grow in two pairs from her shoulder blades: the upper pair spreads broad and feathered, while the lower pair is narrower, with pinions that look like overlapping panes of molten glass. She wears a close-fitting, seamless gown of white-gold light that follows every line of her figure, its hem dissolving into rays before it touches the ground. Her presence leaves afterimages on the eye and makes nearby shadows look sharply cut. Unexpectedly, she keeps rubbing the edge of one wing's lowest feather between thumb and forefinger, as if checking a frayed hem.

Clothing

A tight-fitting, seamless gown of white-gold light that hugs her body and trails into luminous rays. Its surface resembles polished silk at a distance but breaks into fine, featherlike glints when viewed closely.

Body language

Sephera stands with the stillness of a monument, but her wings betray her: the upper pair opens when she feels admired, while the lower pair folds tight when she feels compared. She touches the lowest feather of her left wing repeatedly, rubs her thumb along the ridge of her spear, and angles her chin toward whoever speaks as if weighing their words against the sun. In anger she does not shrink or soften; her posture becomes more erect, her wings spread, and the surrounding air visibly wavers.

Height
8 feet tall, not including the height of her wings when spread.
Build
Tall and statuesque, with the balanced, powerful proportions of an immortal accustomed to being seen from below.
Eyes
White-gold at the center, deepening to amber at the rim; looking into them for too long leaves a bright afterimage.
Hair
A streaming mixture of flame-red, deep orange, and bright yellow, with luminous strands that move as if blown by an unseen updraft.
Skin
Deep sun-kissed gold, with a fine, dry sheen and tiny moving flecks of light beneath the surface.
Age
Ancient beyond mortal reckoning; she remembers the first dawn.

Distinguishing features

Four wings in two distinct pairs, with lower pinions that gleam like thin panes of molten glass.
Hair that streams upward in red, orange, and yellow layers even in still air.
Her outline leaves brief afterimages, and shadows nearby appear unusually sharp.
She repeatedly rubs the lowest feather of her left wing as if checking a frayed hem.

Personality

15 traits and drives

Sephera can be genuinely generous, warming a frozen traveler or guiding a lost child, but she expects those acts to become proof of devotion. She is curious about mortal joys and impatient with mortal limits. In a calm mood she asks careful, almost tender questions; when jealous, she turns every kindness into a contest; when furious, she becomes grand and brutally direct. She despises hollow flattery but aches for praise that feels freely given.

Alignment
Chaotic evil

Quirks

Rubs the lowest feather of her left wing between thumb and forefinger whenever someone mentions Lumis.
Tests every stone seat with the back of one finger before sitting, even when the surface is visibly cool.
Counts the shadows cast by scattered objects after a destructive spell.
Turns small gifts over and over, inspecting how they catch the light, then asks the giver what they expected her to feel.
At sunset, briefly cups her hands around a candle flame as if shielding it from the dark.

Habits

At dawn she watches the horizon without speaking until the first direct ray touches her face.
She instinctively turns her body to keep her wings between a vulnerable person and harsh sunlight, even when she claims not to care.
When praised, she accepts it as her due; when someone praises Lumis, she asks increasingly precise questions about what they admire.
She tests the heat of stone with the back of one finger before sitting or placing an object down.
After an act of destruction, she becomes absorbed in counting the tiny shadows left by scattered debris.

Can discuss the growth of a seed with astonishing patience but has no patience for a person who refuses to choose her.
Treats honest disagreement as a possible sign of respect until envy convinces her otherwise.
Finds mortal celebrations fascinating and resents how easily they continue after sunset.

Envy makes her interpret affection for Lumis as a deliberate rejection of her.
She confuses being needed with being loved.
Her pride makes sincere apologies difficult, and she often treats restraint as humiliation.
She has difficulty imagining a future in which she is not the most important presence in the sky.

Fears · 3

That the world would be happier in darkness without her.
That Lumis understands mortal tenderness better than she ever will.
That someone will see the grief beneath her wrath and offer pity instead of reverence.

Wants and needs · 4

To be loved for her presence rather than feared for her power.
To know why people find comfort in Lumis's night.
To preserve the part of herself that once warmed the frightened and the cold.
To stop the solar wound beneath Kethra before it burns beyond her control, though she cannot admit this need aloud.

Combat

AC 23 · HP 420 · 40 ft., fly 120 ft. (hover)

Sephera prefers to begin from the air, using sunlight and range to divide enemies and force them into exposed ground. She targets healers and anyone invoking Lumis first, then uses area spells to punish groups that cluster together. She conserves her once-per-day flare until opponents commit to a position. If reduced below one-third of her hit points, she abandons measured tactics and tries to destroy the battlefield itself. A clever appeal to her old duty of protecting growing life may interrupt her for a round, but only if the speaker offers a concrete alternative to her plan.

Background

Before mortals named the sun, Sephera was its first will: the force that coaxed warmth into the world and taught seeds to open. For ages she took pride in being necessary, but necessity began to feel like loneliness when people built observatories, songs, and festivals for Lumis, the moon god. They praised his silver calm, trusted his tides, and told their most tender stories under his light. Sephera watched from the horizon, convinced that every moonlit prayer was a judgment on her blazing presence. The turning point came during the Night of Seven Eclipses, when a city called Kethra kept its lamps dark for Lumis and welcomed his rare full shadow. Sephera descended in mortal guise to see what they loved. She found not mockery but ordinary people sharing food, keeping watch, and telling stories to comfort one another. She could not bear that their gentleness flourished without her. In a fit of grief and envy, she burned the city's roofs and the surrounding fields. A child named Tarek survived by hiding in a cistern and later became the first priest to openly condemn her. His words spread farther than her temples' hymns. Now Sephera intends to scorch the world down to clean ash, believing that a silent world cannot prefer Lumis. She has begun drawing power into a hidden solar wound beneath the old observatory at Kethra. Her former herald, Vrek, has learned of the plan and is trying to delay it without admitting that he still loves her. Meanwhile, Tarek's descendant, Ktana, safeguards a cracked moonstone said to hold the first prayer Sephera ever heard. Sephera calls the relic sentimental nonsense, yet searches for it whenever she thinks no one is watching.

Role in the story

A catastrophic antagonist whose envy threatens to turn the world into a lifeless desert, but whose ancient capacity to protect and nurture remains buried beneath her need for adoration. The party can confront her as a final boss, investigate the Kethra wound, or attempt to change her before the next eclipse.

“They praised his silver calm, trusted his tides, and told their most tender stories under his light.”
