Appearance
Elias is a compact, weather-hardened human with the stillness of someone accustomed to standing beside frightened animals and impatient soldiers. His face is narrow and sun-browned, with a soft crease between his brows from years of reading maps in bad light. His black hair is cut close at the sides but left longer on top, where it forms stubborn, wind-tossed ridges that he repeatedly presses flat with two fingers. His hands are broad, dry, and meticulously clean despite his work, with ink caught permanently in the creases around his nails. He moves with economical precision, stepping around puddles and wagon wheels without seeming to look down. The unexpected contradiction is that his stern, almost clerical appearance is interrupted by a tiny brass bell tied inside his left sleeve, which gives a delicate chime whenever he gestures sharply.
“Measured and low, with clipped consonants and a faint northern rhythm. Before difficult answers he draws a thin breath through his teeth.”

Distinguishing Features
A delicate brass bell is sewn inside his left sleeve and chimes whenever he makes a sharp gesture.
His fingernails are scrubbed clean, but black mapmaker's ink permanently stains the creases around them.
He wears a blue thread bracelet knotted with exactly thirty-eight knots, one for each person he has failed to bring safely home.
He smells faintly of pine tar, wet wool, and crushed juniper.
Before answering a difficult question, he inhales through his teeth in a quiet, papery hiss.
Voice
“A quiet baritone with a dry rasp, like rope sliding over wet wood. His voice becomes softer when he is most dangerous.”
Clothing
A rain-darkened wool coat fastened with bone toggles, a faded blue undershirt, layered linen trousers tucked into cracked riding boots, and a broad leather belt crowded with keys, chalk, wax, twine, and tiny inventory tags. He wears a gray scarf wound twice around his neck, even in mild weather, because he dislikes the feeling of damp air on his throat.
Body Language
Elias stands with his thumbs hooked beneath his belt and his shoulders slightly forward, as if leaning into an unseen wind. He rarely points with a finger, preferring a whole-hand gesture toward routes or supplies. When someone mentions Asher or Amelia, his right hand closes around his left wrist. When lying, he becomes perfectly still except for the faint movement of his jaw.
