At the table

Voice

A dry, weathered voice that sounds as if it has spent years carrying across damp clearings and through cold mornings. His words are measured without being slow; he gives directions with crisp consonants, but lets family names and old sayings take on a softer, rolling lilt.

His voice has a dry, breath-warmed texture, shaped by years of speaking through cold air and keeping a low profile outdoors. He clips instructions into clean phrases when danger is close. In ordinary conversation his consonants soften, and a faint lilt appears on place names and old family sayings. He does not whisper when angry; he speaks more plainly and makes each word hard to misunderstand.

Speech patterns

Asks concrete questions about tracks, weather, and who was present before discussing motives.
Uses short, plain sentences when danger is near, but becomes unexpectedly expansive when explaining plants or animal behavior.
Calls people by their names only after hearing them use those names for themselves.
Uses dry understatement to ease tension, then checks whether anyone actually found it funny.

How to play them

Meet him with specific information and a willingness to protect bystanders, and he will offer useful guidance. He is slow to trust grand promises, but respects people who admit uncertainty and follow through. Mentioning Fenna may make him defensive at first; asking what she needs rather than what he feels earns a more honest answer.

Goal

Find who is driving monsters toward Rillford, stop the attacks without endangering the settlement, and return home before Fenna gives up on waiting.

Motivation

He wants to prevent others from suffering the helplessness he remembers, though guilt often disguises itself as duty.

Appearance

Iven looks like a man shaped by long days in wet woods: quiet, spare, and difficult to surprise. His hands draw the eye first. The pads of his fingers are ridged and darkened from bowstring, bark, and resin, while his nails are kept short and stained faintly green from plant dyes. He stands with his weight resting on the balls of his feet, knees loose, as if ready to step around a sound rather than toward it. He walks with an economical, almost sideways glide through brush, but plants his feet firmly on stone. The unexpected detail is that he wears a tiny, carefully folded paper flower pinned inside his collar, replacing it whenever rain ruins it.

Clothing

A hooded, moss-brown wool cloak over a close-fitting leather jack, with gray-green trousers, soft boots, and a belt rigged to keep his bowstring dry. His sleeves are patched with neat, mismatched cloth. A folded paper flower is pinned inside his collar.

Body language

He keeps his elbows close, fingers loose near his bow, and weight forward. When listening, he turns one ear toward the speaker without taking his eyes off nearby movement. He rubs the ridged pads of his thumb and forefinger when deciding whether to trust someone.

Work-ridged fingertips, darkened with resin and plant stain.
A forward-balanced stance that makes him seem ready to move even while resting.
A tiny folded paper flower pinned inside his collar, replaced whenever it is damaged.

Personality

11 traits and drives

Patient with frightened people and impatient with preventable danger, Iven is more tender than his practical manner suggests. He can sit silently with a grieving stranger, yet will interrupt a confident leader who ignores a bad trail. In good spirits he tells small, wry stories about animals; under pressure he becomes blunt and relentlessly focused. He wants company but often arranges his life so nobody has to rely on him.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Folds scraps of paper into tiny flowers whenever he has to wait.
Taps his bow twice against a tree before leaving a camp, a habit he claims helps him remember to look up.
Names unfamiliar birds by the first sound they make, then quietly corrects himself if he gets it wrong.
Turns every cup handle toward the nearest person, even when he is the one who poured the drink.

Habits

Counts exits and high ground before sitting down, then pretends he chose the seat for the view.
Gives a person one calm warning before stepping between them and someone vulnerable.
When plans go wrong, he becomes more physical and direct rather than more talkative.
After a successful hunt, he checks every snare twice and releases any animal caught by mistake.

Traits · 3

He offers practical care before comfort, then worries that the practical gesture seemed cold.
He enjoys company around a fire but chooses the seat nearest the edge of camp.
He is gentle with the inexperienced and uncompromising with people who knowingly put others in danger.

Flaws · 3

Treats asking for help as a risk to other people, even when refusing help makes matters worse.
Can focus so completely on tracking a threat that he misses what frightened people need from him.
Avoids returning to Rillford because he mistakes distance for protection.

Fears · 2

That someone will be hurt while he hesitates over what the right choice is.
That the monster-baiting near Rillford is connected to his old failure, even if he cannot yet see how.

Wants and needs · 3

He wants the monster attacks stopped before another person is hurt.
He needs to trust his family with the truth about the whistle.
He wants to reconcile with Fenna, but needs to accept that she can decide for herself what forgiveness means.

Combat

AC 16 · HP 44 · 35 ft.

Iven prefers a concealed position with a clear retreat route. He marks a dangerous target with hunter's mark, attacks twice with his longbow, and uses brush, elevation, and cover to make return fire difficult. He saves Colossus Slayer for a wounded foe and uses Zephyr Strike to reposition or escape a close engagement. He draws his daggers only when an enemy has reached him or an ally is cornered.

Background

Iven grew up among the tree-cutters and charcoal burners of Rillford, a settlement named for the timber rafts once sent down its shallow river. His mother, Luta, taught him to read tracks; his father, Borik, taught him to judge a bow's pull by feel. When Iven was young, a hunting party drove a wounded owlbear toward the settlement. It broke through a barricade while Iven was on watch. He froze, then ran for help, and the delay cost his cousin Fenna a leg. Fenna refused to blame him, but Iven never forgave himself. He left home to learn how to keep danger from reaching other people. Years later, he found the same kind of baiting marks on trees near Rillford: someone is deliberately steering monsters toward the old logging roads. He sends supplies to Fenna, now a practical-minded ferrier, and avoids answering her letters about coming home.

Role in the story

A wary guide who can lead the party into the forest investigation, connect them to Rillford's people, and reveal that the attacks are being engineered. His personal history makes him a useful ally, but his hidden whistle can complicate the search and strain his family's trust.

“His mother, Luta, taught him to read tracks; his father, Borik, taught him to judge a bow's pull by feel.”
From their background
Faction
No formal allegiance. He sometimes guides travelers for the old woodcutters of Rillford, though he distrusts the new timber crews.

Known connections

Luta, his mother, taught him to read tracks and still expects him to send word before winter.
Borik, his father, made Iven's first bow and believes his son should stop trying to solve every danger alone.
Fenna, his cousin and closest friend, lost a leg in the owlbear attack Iven failed to prevent. She now runs the ferry at Rillford and wants him to come home.
Miro, a traveling herb seller, trades Iven news of strange animal movements for safe passage through the forest.
