At the table

Voice

Dry, steady, and work-worn, with the slight rasp of someone long accustomed to talking beside a brazier. He gives instructions with crisp consonants and lets memory take its time; the name Wulko alone has a gentle, rounded sound.

His voice sounds dry and grounded, shaped by years of speaking over a working fire and giving instructions through stone rooms. Consonants land with the firm clarity of a tool set on a bench; long pauses follow when he searches old memories. The name Wulko itself is soft and rounded, unlike the practical, clipped cadence of most of his sentences.

Speech patterns

Begins advice with a practical question: who is present, what is at risk, and what can be carried out?
Uses hearth and masonry metaphors, but explains them plainly when a listener looks confused.
Repeats a warning once, in slightly different words, then leaves the listener to choose.
Refers to his home as if he might return to ordinary chores there tomorrow.

How to play them

Wulko is most forthcoming with visitors who show respect for the home and ask concrete questions. He offers warnings and context rather than commands, and he admits when a memory has blurred. If treated as a servant or a source of convenient answers, he withdraws into the stonework until the visitor apologizes or leaves.

Goal

Help the living recover the temple staff and face the corruption beyond the Demon Gate without turning the Stone of Fire into a tool of conquest.

Motivation

Protect the living from a careless use of sacred fire, and make amends for dying before he could deal with the threat linked to the Demon Gate.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Wulko appears as a broad, elderly orc whose body has the softened, translucent look of smoke trapped in cloudy glass. Tiny orange flecks drift beneath his skin like sparks under ash, brightening whenever he recalls a name. He stands with his weight carefully centered and moves in short, deliberate steps, as if testing the floor for heat. His hands are large and blunt, their spectral palms blackened with soot; he rubs them together when thinking, leaving a smell of warm stone and charred rosemary. Visitors expect a fierce old priest to loom over them, but Wulko has an unexpectedly practical fondness for neatly folded napkins and will straighten one even in the middle of a haunting.

Clothing

A smoke-faded priest's wrap layered over a workman's apron, both ghostly and worn at the hems. The apron bears faint stitched outlines where tools once hung. A loop of plain cord at his waist holds a cracked clay token.

Body language

He stands squarely, almost too still, then makes small, exact movements with his hands as if arranging tools on a workbench. His gaze follows flames rather than faces. When unsettled, he rubs his palms together until soot-like sparks drift between them.

About 6 feet 4 inches in life; his manifested spirit can seem taller when angered

Deep amber, with tiny sparks moving in the irises
Hair
Sparse charcoal-gray hair, drifting slightly as if stirred by a draft

Smoky gray made translucent by death, with shifting ember-specks beneath the surface

Distinguishing features

Orange flecks drift beneath his translucent skin and gather around his eyes when he remembers something clearly.
His movements have the cautious precision of a mason setting a stone in place.
His broad soot-stained hands are always rubbing together or arranging invisible tools.
Despite his severe priestly appearance, he habitually straightens crooked napkins and folded cloth.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Wulko is welcoming in the manner of someone who has spent a lifetime feeding strangers, yet he does not confuse kindness with trust. He will patiently explain a rite to a frightened novice, then bluntly challenge a confident warrior who treats its price as an inconvenience. In calm moments he is wry and domestic, fussing over the brazier and folded cloth; when the Stone of Fire or the corrupted fey are mentioned, his warmth hardens into a careful, unsentimental focus.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Straightens napkins, sleeves, or loose papers before discussing a tragedy.
Counts three slow breaths before answering a question about the Stone of Fire.
Taps the brazier rim with his thumb as if checking the thickness of a wall.
Calls a flame 'well behaved' when it burns steadily.
Tries to offer visitors a seat, then remembers he cannot move the furniture.

Habits

When asked about a dangerous choice, he first asks who will bear the cost if it goes wrong.
He checks the brazier's rim with his palm before speaking about Aurantheus.
He offers practical comforts, such as a place to sit or a warm cup, even though he can no longer provide either himself.
If a visitor mocks the dead or the protective runes, he becomes immovably formal and stops volunteering information.

Traits · 3

He wants frightened people to feel welcome, but dislikes being treated as harmless.
He is generous with practical help and guarded with dangerous knowledge.
He accepts that the living must choose their own path, yet finds it difficult not to warn them again.

Flaws · 3

He withholds details until he believes a listener understands the stakes, which can make urgent advice arrive too late.
He assumes that everyone values hospitality and sacred obligations as highly as he does.
His memories are vivid but incomplete, and he can be stubborn about admitting uncertainty.

Fears · 3

That the staff beneath the temple has been found by the corrupted fey.
That the party will mistake Aurantheus's willingness to consider aid for a promise of obedience.
That his warnings have become confused through time and will lead someone into danger.

Wants and needs · 3

The party to understand the price Aurantheus may demand before bargaining for the Stone of Fire.
Someone living to determine whether the staff beneath the temple remains safe.
The incomplete rune to be understood as a safeguard, not careless workmanship.

Combat

AC 13 · HP 45 · 0 ft., fly 30 ft. (hover)

Wulko avoids fighting unless someone threatens the brazier, the runes, or a visitor under his protection. He opens with a warning and uses Cinder Palm to drive a foe away from the hearth. If pressed by several enemies, he uses Hearth-Breath to break their advance, then withdraws through walls to draw danger away from the brazier. His spirit form is a custom NPC feature, not a claim about a canonical stat block.

Custom Spirit of the Hearth. Wulko is incorporeal and can pass through ordinary objects, but cannot cross a boundary marked with his own protective runes unless invited.
Custom Ember Memory. Within his former home, Wulko can kindle or extinguish unattended flames and make the brazier replay a brief image of an event it witnessed.
Custom Firewise Counsel. Wulko recognizes signs of elemental fire and can explain the old rites associated with the Stone of Fire, though he cannot command its guardian.

Spells

Hearthspark (cantrip, evocation). Custom cantrip. Produces a small, harmless flame or warms a palm-sized object. Wulko uses it for demonstration and ritual work, not as a combat attack.
Keeper's Mark (level 1, abjuration). Custom 1st-level rite. Inscribes or renews a simple protective mark on a doorway, brazier, or hearth. The mark gives a faint warning glow when an elemental or fey creature crosses the threshold, but does not prevent entry.

Actions

Cinder Palm. Melee Spell Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 () fire damage. Wulko's hands leave a brief, soot-black palmprint in the air.
Hearth-Breath. Custom, Recharge 5-6. Wulko exhales a narrow stream of spectral flame in a 15-foot line. Each creature in the line makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking 14 () fire damage on a failure or half as much on a success. The flame does not ignite objects he considers part of his home.
Coal of Remembrance. Wulko touches a willing creature or a written message, leaving a thumb-sized ember that remains warm but gives no light for 24 hours. It can be used to carry one short whispered message to a creature Wulko knows within a mile, provided that creature is also willing.

Reactions

Hearthward Rebuke. When a creature within 5 feet damages the brazier or a protective rune, Wulko releases a burst of heat. The creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take 5 () fire damage and be pushed 5 feet away.

Background

Before his death, Wulko was the priest and keeper of a stone-built home in Bloodleaf Valley, a place where travelers could warm themselves without being asked what they had done to deserve shelter. He carved protective runes into its lintels and tended the brazier whose inscriptions summon Aurantheus, guardian of the Stone of Fire. He believed fire was a witness, not a weapon, and taught that a hearth's duty was to keep people alive long enough to choose what they would become. That faith was tested when the blood trees began to spread and reports of corruption beyond the Demon Gate reached the valley. Wulko learned that the Gate and the trees were bound by a shared old power, but the temple's staff, the one tool he believed could help confront the corrupted fey, had already been hidden beneath the temple. He died before he could retrieve it. His last act was to seal his home with runes and leave the brazier ready for someone who might summon the guardian. Death did not make him omniscient. He remembers the people and warnings he cared for, but the years have worn away the exact order of some events. When Draak made contact, Wulko served as an informant and warned the Avengers of Crumble that Aurantheus would demand a heavy price before yielding the Stone of Fire. He knows the staff is beneath the temple, but not whether it remains there. He still worries over the living, especially anyone who treats Emberwood Boughs as mere payment rather than a dangerous promise.

Role in the story

A deceased informant whose counsel connects the Stone of Fire, Aurantheus, the temple staff, and the corrupted fey beyond the Demon Gate. Wulko cannot solve the party's problems for them, but his incomplete memories and clear moral warnings can steer their choices.
