Tiffany
Tiffany
At the table
Voice
A dry, forward voice shaped by calling warnings across wet roads and working near rushing water. It has a breathy edge and crisp sibilants, but no theatrical hush. When he is alarmed, his breathing catches before his voice does, and his next words come out fast and blunt.
He speaks in clipped, workmanlike sentences, with a soft hiss on s sounds and a faint rasp from years of calling directions over rain and river noise. His words come steadily until he is rattled, when he takes one sharp inhale and rushes the next sentence as if trying to catch up with his own breath.

How to play them
Tiffany begins cautious and useful, offering practical assistance rather than demanding trust. He warms to people who keep their word and protect those with less power. Direct questions about Cadan make him guarded, but evidence that the missing guard may be alive earns his full attention.
Goal
Find out what happened to Cadan and secure enough help to repair the floodgates before the next heavy rains.
Motivation
He wants to be useful without letting duty turn him into someone who measures lives by orders and numbers.
Appearance
Tiffany is a weathered human man with a broad, patient face and a watchman's habit of seeming to occupy less space than his frame suggests. He waits with his weight balanced on the balls of his feet, heels barely settled, as if the ground might suddenly ask him to move. His breath is normally slow and measured, but when startled he takes one sharp, dry inhale through his nose and holds it. His dark hair is clipped short at the sides and left uneven on top, with pale threads at the temples. People remember the contradiction between his guarded stance and the small, careful way he handles breakable things.
Clothing
A patched dark-green wool coat over a riveted breastplate, with a weatherproof hood, sturdy trousers, and mud-dark boots. His cuffs are stitched with plain, careful repairs.
Body language
He stands balanced forward, knees loose, hands away from his belt unless danger is near. When listening, he turns his whole body toward the speaker rather than merely his head. He taps one boot twice before committing to a risky move.

Personality
12 traits and drivesTiffany is vigilant but not suspicious of everyone, and he is capable of warmth without being easy to persuade. Among strangers he is economical with words and notices small risks; with children or frightened travelers he becomes patient and unexpectedly playful. When angry, he does not go still or gentle: he plants his feet, speaks plainly, and makes his objections hard to ignore. Praise embarrasses him, while a clear request for help can disarm him.

Background
Tiffany grew up at the edge of the drained marsh called the Herons' Rest, a boastful old name for a settlement where the birds vanished generations ago. His mother, Nessa, kept the floodgates; his father, Oren, repaired carts and taught him that a promise was only as good as the work behind it. At nineteen, Tiffany joined a road patrol. During a spring flood, his captain ordered him to hold a bridge while villagers were still crossing. The bridge gave way, and Tiffany disobeyed to pull three people from the water. A fourth, a fellow guard named Cadan, was swept away. Tiffany never learned whether Cadan drowned or escaped downstream. He left the patrol, carrying the blame and the conviction that orders matter less than the people trapped beneath them. Now he escorts travelers and quietly searches the marsh roads for any sign of Cadan. His mother needs help keeping the floodgates working, while a local reeve wants Tiffany to identify smugglers using the abandoned channels.
Role in the story
A capable, grounded ally who can guide characters through flooded backroads and introduce them to the failing defenses at Herons' Rest. His search for Cadan can lead into a patrol cover-up, a smuggling route, or a rescue mission.
“His mother, Nessa, kept the floodgates; his father, Oren, repaired carts and taught him that a promise was only as good as the work behind it.”
- Faction
- Formerly served with the local road patrol. He has no current formal allegiance and distrusts the reeve's agents.
