Wensai
Wensai
At the table
Voice
A dry, slightly rasped voice shaped by calling across windy roads and working among wagons. She speaks with irregular, surprising emphasis, often stressing the last useful detail. Her voice becomes brisk and clipped during danger, but she does not lower it when angry; instead, her consonants grow sharply defined.
Her voice has a dry, slightly rasped edge from years of calling over wind and wagon wheels. She places stress unexpectedly, often landing on the practical word at the end of a sentence. Her work makes her concrete: she compares fear to smoke, a promise to a seed, and a lie to dye that has not taken. In the field she gives clipped instructions; among trusted company, her speech loosens into long, meandering accounts of plants and people.

How to play them
Approach Wensai with a specific account of what happened and what help is wanted. She responds well to practical cooperation and people who acknowledge uncertainty. Do not demand that she choose between a person and an animal as a test; she will notice the manipulation. If the party helps Qadira or investigates the blight without rushing to burn the affected grove, Wensai becomes a committed ally.
Goal
Find the source of the orchard blight and stop it without repeating the reckless, unilateral choice that cost Qadira her storehouse.
Motivation
Wensai wants to be useful without mistaking urgency for wisdom. She is driven by care for the living things of the woodland, but also by a need to prove that one terrible choice does not define every choice after it.
Appearance
A lean, spring-muscled young woman stands as if the clearing might ask her to move at any moment. Warm, weather-browned skin is freckled across her nose and shoulders, and pollen has caught along her jaw-length black hairline. Her dark hazel eyes scan first, then settle on a person with unnerving attention. She wears travel-worn ivory robes over practical leather armor, their hems muddied and leaf-stained, their cuffs embroidered with careful blush-pink vines. One sleeve has been patched with a square of blue sailcloth, another with rough brown linen. She holds a lacquered ivory fox mask whose left ear has been mended with conspicuous pink stitches. Rather than clutching it, she turns it gently by the snout, as though checking the repair. Her steps land softly on the balls of her feet; she leaves an impression of alertness held in check, like a bow not yet drawn.
Clothing
Travel-worn ivory-white robes with restrained blush-pink piping and intricate cuff embroidery, layered over fitted leather armor. The hems are stained with mud and leaf tannins; the sleeves bear mismatched repairs. A seed pouch and curved scimitar hang at her belt. She keeps the fox mask carefully oiled, while the rest of her kit is patched and plainly used.
Body language
Wensai keeps her weight forward and her knees loose, ready to sidestep rather than stand her ground. Her attention moves in small, efficient sweeps from hands to exits to the ground. When she is trying not to argue, she rubs the fold of a paper charm with her thumb. A rare laugh shows a broad, slightly uneven front-tooth gap; she eats quickly unless she is sharing food, when she slows down and watches everyone get a portion.

Personality
13 traits and drivesWensai is observant and generous with practical care, yet guarded about promises; she can tend a stranger’s fever all night and still refuse to explain why she stayed. In calm moments she is dryly funny and curious about small crafts. When frightened, she becomes procedural, checking supplies and exits instead of admitting fear. When angry, she grows direct and physically still, with none of the softness she shows to the injured.

Combat
AC 14 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Wensai avoids a fair fight. She opens with Entangle when several foes cluster, then uses Produce Flame or her scimitar against whoever threatens a wounded ally. She uses healing magic to keep someone standing, not to prolong a hopeless fight, and retreats into difficult ground if outnumbered. She will risk herself to pull a trapped creature or civilian clear, but does not chase fleeing enemies into unknown terrain.

Background
Wensai grew up in a family of itinerant dyers who traveled between the orchard hamlets around the woodland known locally as Pollenwake, a name earned from the golden haze that drifts there each spring. Her mother, Imani, taught her to judge a plant by its scent before trusting its color; her father, Oru, repaired wagons and believed every trouble could be solved with a longer axle. Wensai learned both patience and the limits of patience. As a child, she helped gather medicinal leaves for a small druid circle, but thought of herself as a craftswoman, not a guardian. At seventeen, a careless charcoal burn and a dry summer wind drove a fire into the eastern orchard. Wensai had been carrying water for the dyers and saw a young fox caught in a bramble pen. She ran back for it instead of warning the nearest household first. The fox lived; a storehouse and several trees did not. A beekeeper named Qadira lost her livelihood and never forgave Wensai for choosing the animal over the people. The druid who had taught Wensai to recognize smoke, old Hadeo, did not absolve her. He made her spend the following season helping replant the ruined orchard and listening to the families who had suffered. That experience changed her from a curious gatherer into a wary caretaker. Hadeo gave her the repaired fox mask, not as a badge of office but as a reminder that good intentions do not make a choice harmless. Wensai now patrols the woodland edges, treating sick animals and people, and looking into a new blight that is killing young trees near the old charcoal pits. She still sends dried remedies to her parents, though she has not visited them in months. Qadira’s hives are failing again, and Wensai suspects the blight is connected, but fears that another rushed intervention will make matters worse.
Role in the story
A young druid whose knowledge of the woodland can guide the party toward the blight’s source. Her strained relationship with Qadira and hidden evidence involving her family create a personal conflict that can become a side quest, an uneasy alliance, or a test of whether the party can investigate carefully rather than reach for an easy destructive solution.
“Wensai learned both patience and the limits of patience.”
- Faction
- A novice member of Hadeo’s small, informal druid circle, which has no formal title and meets wherever the woodland needs tending.
