Odile Varn
Odile Varn
At the table
Voice
A low, weather-rough voice with a little rasp from salt air and a firm, clipped rhythm learned from giving instructions over wind and surf. She does not soften her tone when angry; she becomes more exact, as if reading a harbour notice aloud.
She speaks in low, dry phrases shaped by salt air and years of calling instructions over wind. Her consonants are crisp from habitually naming coordinates and dock numbers; each sentence seems to end with an invisible full stop. Her voice has a faint rasp after long days outside, and she will raise it only to be heard over surf or panic.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Odile responds best to clear facts, useful work, and honest statements of risk. She will test visitors with practical questions before sharing what she knows. Mentioning Edda or the beacon makes her guarded, but showing evidence of danger to the harbour will earn her cooperation.
Goal
Find the missing lighthouse keeper before the next full storm, and learn whether Edda left willingly or was driven away.
Motivation
Keep the harbour's people alive without letting guilt make every decision for them.
Appearance
Odile Varn is tall enough to look over most men at the bar, with a weather-cut face and a jaw that shifts slightly to one side when she chews. Her broad, blunt teeth show whenever she bites through a strip of dried fish, giving her stern expression an unexpectedly wolfish edge. She moves with the careful, rolling balance of someone who has spent decades on wet decks, placing each boot as if the floor might tilt. Rain beads on her oilskin, and she leaves behind the smell of lamp oil, salt, and old rope. Unexpected for a harbourmaster, she keeps a tiny, painstakingly tended pot of mint behind the tavern's rain barrel, pinching off leaves to give to anyone with a cough.
Clothing
A long, dark green oilskin coat patched at the elbows and salt-stiff at the hem, a heavy wool skirt over tucked trousers, tarred boots, and a knitted grey scarf. Her pockets hold chalk, a folding knife, and scraps of twine.
Body language
She plants one hand flat on the bar when weighing a claim and rubs her thumb over the edge of a brass tide token when unsettled. Her gaze checks windows, doors, and the weather beyond them in that order. When someone mentions the lighthouse, she stops whatever she is doing for a single beat before resuming.

Personality
12 traits and drivesOdile is stern about safety and surprisingly patient with frightened people, yet impatient with anyone who treats a warning as a suggestion. In ordinary business she is brisk and exact; after a close call she becomes almost tender, checking everyone's hands for cold or injury. When she is angry she grows more direct and starts naming consequences. She wants people to trust her judgment, but resents being treated as if she is merely a clerk behind a bar.

AC 11 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Odile is a level 0, non-spellcasting commoner rather than a trained adventurer. She tries to de-escalate, block access to the docks, and call for help. If cornered, she uses the bar, crates, and narrow passages for cover, striking only to make space for escape. She will not abandon a helpless person.

Background
Odile Varn was born in the harbour village of Shalehook, where her mother smoked herring and her father kept the old beacon. At nineteen, she took a berth on a mail cutter and learned to read weather by the set of a gull's wings and the taste of rain. During the Black Squall, a sudden storm drove three fishing boats onto the outer teeth of the reef. Odile had to choose between guiding the cutter back for her younger brother or holding the beacon's emergency shutter open for the trapped boats. She held the light. Her brother survived the wreck, but another boat did not, and the decision made her a harbourmaster who treats every arrival as a responsibility rather than a line in a book. She has counted landing fees behind the bar of the Gull-and-Sedge for fourteen years, sharing its cramped back room with the innkeeper, Sada. She still sends money to her brother, who now repairs nets upriver and has not forgiven her for the storm. The current keeper of the lighthouse, Edda, has been missing for nine nights. Odile has found a fresh wick, cut to the beacon's old emergency length, on the harbour steps, but has told no one because she suspects someone in the village helped Edda disappear.
