Corrin Pike
Corrin Pike
At the table
Voice
A dry, rasped voice with a little whistle at the end of certain words, as if air keeps slipping through a gap in a sail. It carries easily over rain and water, the product of years calling instructions across a pier. When he is tired, each phrase ends in a gravelly catch.
He speaks in short, workmanlike phrases shaped by years of calling over wind and surf. His vocabulary is rich in knots, tides, and practical measurements; when speaking of grief, he becomes halting and reaches for a task to finish the sentence.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Corrin with practical respect and he will be fair, if unsentimental. Offer help without demanding his story and he may eventually share it. Press him about the lighthouse rocks and he will shut down or become sharply defensive. He responds to sincere concern for Kesta more readily than to appeals about his own wellbeing.
Goal
Repay Harbourmaster Terek without being drawn into a dangerous crossing, then find the courage to tell Kesta what he remembers about the night Bram vanished.
Motivation
To remain useful without having to risk another loss, and to settle the debt that binds him to Harbourmaster Terek.
Appearance
Corrin sits hunched beneath the pier lantern, seeming at first to be another bundled coil of net and oilskin. His face is wind-creased and browned, his beard cut short with a knife, and his shoulders roll with the careful, tide-timed motion of someone who has spent decades balancing on wet planks. He smells strongly of tarred hemp, old fish, and the sharp soap he uses in a losing attempt to scrub the harbor from his hands. The surprising detail is a tiny, meticulously maintained brass music box tucked inside his coat; he winds it before dawn, though he claims not to care for music.
Clothing
A patched, tar-dark oilskin coat over a thick wool shirt, patched trousers, a knitted cap, and boots with soles repeatedly nailed back into place. A narrow leather pouch at his chest holds waxed thread and a tiny brass music box.
Body language
He keeps his chin tucked against the rain and his elbows close, hands moving constantly through cord even while he talks. When uneasy, he rubs a thumb over the brass music box through his coat. Near the lighthouse, his feet turn toward shore before he notices.

Combat
AC 10 · HP 4 · 30 ft.Corrin avoids a fair fight. He backs toward a boat or a crowded pier, uses his net to restrain the nearest threat, and shouts for witnesses. If trapped, he strikes with his marlinspike and aims to escape rather than kill. He will not pursue anyone toward the lighthouse rocks.

Background
Corrin learned net-mending from his mother on the long pier at Greyhook, a harbor whose name began as a shortened local phrase nobody remembers now. He married young, raised a daughter, and spent most of his life keeping boats working rather than making his own fortune. Twenty years ago, during a storm, his son Bram was lost near the lighthouse rocks. Corrin had urged him to take a boat out to help a stranded crew; the sea returned the boat but not the boy. Since then Corrin has refused to go near those rocks, though he never tells the story unless the weather turns. His daughter Kesta, now a harbor pilot, believes he is punishing himself and visits less often than either of them admits they want. Corrin owes Harbourmaster Terek a favor because Terek quietly hid the fact that Corrin once rowed contraband medicine past the harbor toll during a fever outbreak. Now Terek is pressing him to ferry a sealed parcel after dark, and Corrin suspects the favor is being used to draw him back toward the lighthouse shoals.
Role in the story
A grounded harbor contact who can provide passage, repair gear, and local knowledge. His debt to the harbourmaster can pull the party into a smuggling or rescue problem, while the truth about Bram and the lighthouse offers a personal mystery.
“He married young, raised a daughter, and spent most of his life keeping boats working rather than making his own fortune.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. He works under the harbor's ordinary rules and owes Harbourmaster Terek a personal favor.
