Isak Reiter
Isak Reiter
At the table
Voice
A dry, slightly rasped speaking voice with a trace of sawdust roughness, as if he has spent years calling over machinery. His consonants land cleanly; his breath catches faintly after long climbs. When he is excited by a difficult trail, his sentences quicken and become more detailed, not louder.
His words are clipped and practical, shaped by years of giving instructions over saw noise and wind. He uses Bavarian turns of phrase with locals and carefully plain German with strangers. He names tools, terrain, and distances precisely, but often leaves motives unspoken.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He offers practical help first and asks what the other party can do for him in return. He respects competence, not titles. If confronted with evidence about the false tracks, he will trade information or assistance for help finding the culprit; threats make him calculate exits and leverage rather than confess.
Goal
Find who is faking his wolf tracks before the frightened settlements organize a forest purge that could expose the wolf-skin and destroy his hunting ground.
Motivation
Isak wants a life in which nobody can price his labor cheaply or make him answer for another person's decisions. Hunting gives him control, danger, and the satisfaction of a task completed on his terms.
Appearance
Isak is a tall, long-limbed Bavarian man whose stillness makes him seem to take up more space than his frame should allow. His wavy blond hair is flattened beneath a green felt hunting hat, then springs loose in damp curls. Grey eyes travel first to doors, windows, and the dark gaps beneath furniture; only then do they settle on a face. He moves with a logger's careful economy, placing each boot as if the ground might be trapped. His wolf-skin hangs from his shoulders like a heavy, tawny pelt, its coarse outer guard hairs rough against the smoother russet underfur. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny pressed-flower book tucked in his coat and handles it with the same solemn care as his rifle.
Clothing
A practical Bavarian hunting dress: dark green wool jacket, knee-length brown trousers, thick stockings, hobnailed boots, and a felt hat with a worn feather. His cuffs are stained with pitch and oil. A weatherproofed wolf-skin is folded across his back, secured with leather straps and hidden hooks.
Body language
He stands a little too close when testing someone, as if measuring whether they will yield ground. His eyes sweep the room's edges instead of meeting a speaker's gaze. When pleased by a good mechanism, he crouches to inspect it and forgets the person waiting beside him.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesMethodical and observant, Isak can be patient with a difficult mechanism but impatient with a person who lies badly. He enjoys the pursuit and can become openly playful when a quarry proves clever, yet dislikes needless mess and keeps careful promises about payment. In public he is guarded and matter-of-fact; alone in the woods he is more animated, speaking to traps and animals as though they were coworkers. He is capable of tenderness toward the memory of his family but responds to living affection by changing the subject.
- Alignment
- Self-serving and cruel, but governed by a private code of method and payment rather than loyalty to law.

Exact movement depends on the table's Other rules.Isak prefers to choose the ground, set a snare, and fire before his quarry knows he is present. He uses trees and uneven ground to break sight lines, then shifts only if cornered or if speed will end the fight. He does not fight to protect a companion unless their survival serves a concrete purpose. If badly hurt or trapped, he retreats toward dense timber rather than making a last stand.

Background
Isak grew up in a timber camp where his father taught him to judge a tree by its creak and his mother taught him to keep accounts of every favor owed. He became a logger, good with axes, pulleys, and the stubborn mechanisms of a sawmill. The work paid poorly, and when a foreman blamed Isak for a fatal rigging failure, Isak discovered that being feared could earn more than being dependable. He began taking night work as a hunter, first tracking wolves and poachers, then accepting discreet contracts against people who had vanished into the woods. The turning point came when he found a wolf-skin in a hollow beneath a felled beech, still warm though the beast it belonged to was long dead. He wore it in desperation to escape a winter pursuit and woke the next morning with blood on his teeth and no memory of the night. Rather than destroy it, he learned to use it. Now he hunts for the settlements around the tract locals call the Nettles, named for the weed that returns wherever anyone clears ground. He still sends part of his pay to his mother, Hedi, who believes he is a conventional gamekeeper. He avoids his former foreman, Jost, who knows the rigging accident was no accident and has begun asking questions. Isak's current trouble is a run of livestock killings that he did not commit: someone is imitating his wolf tracks, and the villagers are preparing to burn the forest edge.
Role in the story
A dangerous hunter who may be an uneasy ally, a paid pursuer, or the apparent culprit behind a wave of attacks. His knowledge of the forest is valuable, but his appetite for the hunt makes trusting him risky.
“He became a logger, good with axes, pulleys, and the stubborn mechanisms of a sawmill.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. He takes occasional contracts from farms and timber settlements near the Nettles, but keeps his own counsel.
