Ulmira Ka Dyem
At the table
Voice
Her voice has a clear, dry edge, with a small breath-catching pause before she answers. Years of speaking over archery practice and across windy woodland have made her consonants crisp and her vowels unhurried. When tired, a faint rasp appears from tunnel dust and too many nights without proper sleep; when amused, she releases a short breath through her nose before the joke.
Her speech is precise and well schooled, shaped by academy lectures and the measured courtesy of a noble household. Field lessons have given her a habit of naming practical details first: distance, wind, tracks, exits. She uses clipped phrases while working, but tells stories in winding, vivid sentences once she trusts the listener. Her humor arrives dry and sideways.
Speech patterns
How to play them
She is wary of authority and warm toward people who share information without demanding trust first. She will trade useful knowledge, scouting, or a safe route for help investigating the academy tunnels. If treated as a rescued possession or ordered to abandon her brother, she becomes cool and formally uncooperative. Earn her confidence by keeping a promise, especially a small one.
Goal
Find her brother Khosh, learn why the academy imprisoned her, and expose the truth without letting the academy decide who deserves to know it.
Motivation
Love for her brother, anger at the academy's evasions, and a stubborn belief that the truth belongs to the people endangered by it.
Appearance
Elya looks every inch a high-born student until she moves. Her costly fitted leather armor is supple, dark green, and stitched with tiny gold leaf patterns; tunnel dust has worked into its seams, and one shoulder bears a fresh scrape from her escape. She stands poised and straight, but walks with the cautious, heel-light placement of someone who learned to listen for hollow ground. Her face is fine-boned and composed, her pale olive skin warm against a mass of dark hair pinned with a carved wooden clasp. Before answering, she draws a quick breath through her nose and looks first at exits, then at hands, then at faces. Unexpectedly, she keeps a tiny pressed-flower bookmark tucked into the armor over her heart, its petals carefully mended with thread.
Clothing
Expensive forest-green studded leather, tailored close at the waist and shoulders, with discreet gold embroidery, reinforced bracers, a travel-stained dark cloak, and polished riding boots now dusted with tunnel grit. Her academy pin has been turned inward.
Body language
She holds herself with academy-trained dignity, but her gaze keeps making small, deliberate sweeps toward doors, windows, and floor joints. While listening, she rolls her thumb over the bowstring's serving. When she has decided to act, she stops moving altogether for a beat, takes that sharp nasal intake, and then goes.

Background
Elya came from Ka Dyem, a woodland estate whose old nobility still measures duty in seasons of tending rather than acreage. Her elder brother, Khosh, left home to study wardcraft at the academy called the Burdock Hall, named for the stubborn burrs that infest its grounds. He sent regular letters until one arrived with a line of ink scratched out so hard it tore the paper. Then he vanished. The academy claimed he had taken a private appointment; Elya found no record of it and enrolled as a student to search for herself. Her turning point came during her first term, when a controlled spell demonstration ruptured a buried passage beneath the academy. A student was pinned under stone while instructors argued over whether the tunnel was safe. Elya ignored their orders, crawled in, and dragged the student out. She learned that caution can preserve a life, but deference can waste one. Years later, following a fragment of Khosh's handwriting into the same tunnels, she was captured by academy wizards and held in a warded cell. The party freed her before her captors could move her. She now owes them gratitude, but not obedience. Her closest living tie is to her tutor, Brzhan, an unsentimental ranger who taught her to read bent grass and distrust a perfectly tidy trail. She still writes to her mother, though each letter leaves out the danger. The academy wants her returned quietly, her brother's trail is growing cold, and the tunnels have begun to produce fresh footprints that do not match any student or guard.
Role in the story
A rescued ally, an investigator with her own agenda, and a living connection to the academy's hidden tunnels. She can guide the party through the grounds, but her search for Khosh may draw them into a conflict she has not fully explained.
