At the table
Voice
A dry, breathy intake precedes his first word, followed by a rough-edged, ordinary speaking voice. Years of carrying loads have made him speak in short phrases that leave room for a reply. When annoyed, he speaks faster and more plainly, not more softly.
His German-accented English is workmanlike, with clipped endings and a slight catch before names he does not know. He clears his throat when he has to ask for something, a habit from years of speaking around other people's labor and tempers.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer him a concrete task and a clear place to sleep. He responds poorly to vague assurances or public accusations. If challenged about being an invader, he will ask what work would make him welcome, then watch closely to see whether the offer is sincere.
Goal
Win a recognized place at the Lodge without having to beg for it.
Motivation
To turn temporary shelter into a place he has earned, while avoiding another promise he might fail to keep.
Appearance
In human mien Klaus looks like a lean young man who has slept in his clothes and eaten when offered. In fae mien, branching antlers rise from his brow and rabbit ears stand in place of human ears; the antlers are blunt-tipped and nick the lintels of low rooms. His coat is shiny at the elbows, his boots hold dried mud in the seams, and he moves with a sudden, springing start after standing too still. He takes up less room than his antlers suggest, then forgets they are there and knocks against doorframes. Unexpected for a freeloader: he keeps his bedding and borrowed corner exact, with every item squared to the wall.
Clothing
A patched wool coat, plain work shirt, mended trousers, and mud-dark boots. He wears a short scarf he can pull over his human ears, though it does little to conceal his fae mien.
Body language
Keeps his shoulders tucked and his hands visible. His ears turn toward quiet sounds before his face does. When uneasy, he measures doorways with a glance and shifts his antlers clear of nearby people.

Combat
HP 0Avoids a fair fight. He looks for cover and an exit, uses his antlers only when cornered, and flees if an ally falls or the odds turn against him. He will not knowingly strike a helpless foe.

Background
Klaus grew up in Bavaria, where he learned to mend harness, haul sacks, and let older people finish speaking before he asked for anything. His first clear change came during a winter night spent sheltering in a disused roadside shed: a fox got in, and he found himself listening to its movement before he could see it. In his fae mien, antlers and long rabbit ears had appeared by morning. He left home after a quarrel with his family over a promise he had made to keep a younger cousin out of trouble; the cousin was hurt anyway, and Klaus could not bear the look his family gave him. He reached the Lodge by following rumors of shelter and a freehold. Its residents now regard him as an invader hiding among them, not a welcomed guest. He has stayed by doing small chores, sleeping where he is permitted, and never asking who owns the next meal. He wants to earn a place without admitting how badly he needs one.
Role in the story
A suspiciously convenient lodger whose small acts of service may earn him a place, or make his presence a test of the freehold's hospitality and security.
“In his fae mien, antlers and long rabbit ears had appeared by morning.”
- Faction
- Seelie. He is an uninvited lodger at the Lodge freehold, not a recognized member.
