At the table

Voice

A road-worn voice with a dry rasp and the breath control of someone used to calling across a moving wagon or a busy yard. His ordinary speech is direct and well-paced; when he is excited by gossip, he clips words together and forgets to pause. Anger makes him more forceful and plainspoken, not softer.

His voice has a dry rasp from years of road dust, shouted guard calls, and speaking over wagon noise. He shapes words cleanly but lets the ends of casual phrases wear away. He speaks quickly when trading stories, slowly when checking a suspicious account, and with blunt, unvarnished force when someone threatens his family.

Speech patterns

Asks a practical question that sounds casual but reveals what the other person knows.
Uses a small, easy smile to invite confidences, then repeats a speaker's own phrasing when testing their story.
Calls his work 'a place at the door' rather than claiming importance.
When discussing the pilgrimage, speaks plainly and dwells on the people he met rather than the relic.

How to play them

Begin with courtesy and an unthreatening smile. Ask about practical matters, listen for inconsistencies, and offer help that makes the other person feel indebted without making the price explicit. He responds warmly to sincere respect for working people. Threats against his family end the charm at once.

Goal

Make his family's place in the castle secure through service and useful judgment, without letting the Regent's household turn his son into a political pawn.

Motivation

Gratitude for the security his family gained struggles with the desire to prove that he deserves his position independently of the Regent's favor.

Appearance

Tall and lean, with sharp cheekbones, a narrow jaw, and a weathered complexion that looks wind-polished rather than aged. He stands as if a wagon floor might begin to sway beneath him: weight centered, knees loose, one foot angled toward the nearest exit. His dark hair is kept close at the temples and tied back at the nape. The red-and-tan uniform of the Cloak of Quadra Virex is immaculate, its sun emblem polished bright. Unexpectedly, a tiny wooden bird, crudely carved and rubbed smooth by years of handling, is tucked into his breast pocket; it looks like a child's keepsake, not a soldier's charm. He moves with measured economy, turning his whole body to watch someone rather than merely flicking his eyes. He leaves the impression of a man who has already noticed the door, the lie, and who is listening.

Clothing

Immaculate red-and-tan Cloak livery with a polished sun emblem, sturdy underlayers, a well-maintained belt, and clean, practical boots. A small carved wooden bird rides in his breast pocket.

Body language

When waiting, Yago puts his weight on the balls of his feet and angles one boot toward an exit. He stands very straight in uniform, but his shoulders loosen around working people. His smile arrives quickly and fades before his eyes catch up.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Yago is attentive and generous with people who remind him of the roads and fields he came from, yet guarded around those who can decide his family's future. He likes gossip because it lets him predict danger, but also because he enjoys knowing what powerful people would rather conceal. In a relaxed mood he is quick to laugh and tell a story against himself; under pressure he becomes brisk, watchful, and exacting. He is grateful for his position and quietly hungry to make it permanent.

Alignment
Protective of the people who raised him up; pragmatic about the rules that keep them there.

Quirks

Rubs the carved bird's beak with his thumb whenever someone gives him a half-truth.
Counts wagon wheels, cart wheels, or spinning mill wheels without realizing he is doing it.
Keeps his boots polished even after a muddy patrol, but refuses to polish the worn buckle on his belt.
When asked for a secret, offers a harmless true one first to see whether the listener can keep it.
Claims the brief potion-grown beard made him look distinguished, and becomes absurdly specific about its shape.

Habits

Counts exits and watches hands before he settles into a room.
Performs public duties with crisp zeal, then relaxes only when he is among people he considers family.
When someone boasts, he asks a mild question that invites them to keep talking.
After a tense exchange, he checks the clasp of his sword belt even when it is already secure.

Traits · 4

Notices small changes in tone and posture, but sometimes mistakes suspicion for insight.
Protects ordinary workers from needless humiliation, while carefully observing anyone with courtly influence.
Enjoys being liked, yet keeps private score of every favor.
Can be openly self-mocking about his past, but bristles when someone else uses it to diminish him.

Flaws · 3

He mistakes being observant for being entitled to other people's private business.
His ambition makes him too ready to treat an overheard confidence as an opportunity.
He is insecure about his borrowed status and can become defensive when reminded of his common birth.

Fears · 3

That his family's place at court will vanish as quickly as it was granted.
That Teko will be made to pay for an adult's political choices.
That the card player he cheated suffered more than Yago has allowed himself to imagine.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs his family's position to become secure rather than dependent on a single favor.
Wants Teko to keep his friendship with Nakarnia without becoming a court instrument.
Needs to find and repay the card player he cheated.
Wants someone to recognize his judgment and skill without treating his past as a charity case.

Combat

HP 38 · Normal human-like walking pace; uses the GM's usual movement rules

Yago protects the person or doorway he has been assigned to guard. He avoids chasing a nimble opponent into unknown ground, uses commands to keep allies coordinated, and targets a weapon arm or footing when he can. If the fight turns against his household, he buys time to get them out rather than pursuing a personal victory. Numerical guidance in his actions is custom and should be adapted to the table's Generic Fantasy procedures.

Custom Generic Fantasy feature. Uncanny Listener. When Yago has a moment to observe a conversation or a room, the GM may give him one useful, nonmagical inference about who is concealing something or which detail does not fit.
Custom Generic Fantasy feature. Borrowed Station. People who know of the Saint Regent's favor may hesitate before openly challenging Yago, but this offers no protection against those who reject the Regent's authority.
Custom Generic Fantasy feature. Wagon-Born Balance. Yago keeps his footing on swaying, uneven, or crowded ground.

Actions

Service Sword. Melee attack with his service sword. Custom Generic Fantasy guideline: on a successful attack, deal damage; use the GM's normal attack procedure.
Pressing Blow. Yago drives in with a shoulder or pommel. Custom Generic Fantasy guideline: on a successful attack, deal damage and force a human-sized target to give ground or lose their footing if the GM judges the terrain suitable.
Hold the Line. Yago calls a short command and points out an opening. One nearby ally who can hear him gains a favorable circumstance on their next attempt to hold a position or strike a foe, at the GM's discretion. Custom feature, not a canonical Generic Fantasy rule.

Reactions

Interpose. When an ally or protected person is threatened nearby, Yago can move to place himself between them and the attacker, if the GM's normal movement procedure allows it.
Guard the Passage. When a foe tries to slip past his post, Yago attempts to block the route rather than chase. Resolve using the table's usual opposed or contested procedure, if any.

Services they sell

Escorting visitors through guarded parts of the castle when authorized.
Quietly checking whether a rumor about the household has substance.
Teaching a novice how to keep watch without advertising their attention.

Rewards they can give

A credible introduction to the Saint Regent's household, if Yago believes the party will not endanger his family.
A warning about which guards are genuinely alert and which merely perform the part.
Information overheard in the castle, traded for discretion or a favor.

Background

Yago Floshern was born on a wagon and grew up with his mother and brother moving between farm work, market roads, and temporary rooms. Their life was unsettled but not miserable; he had a handful of close childhood friends and learned early to read a stranger's mood before asking for a place by the fire. He worked as a peasant, and later served the itinerant musician Graysus May, who taught him how to listen for the change in a room before a quarrel began. A pilgrimage to the holiest relic of his people changed his idea of devotion: the journey was cold, difficult, and ordinary, and he returned believing that faith mattered most in what one did for the living. Years later, a strong potion gave him a thick, bushy beard for several hours. He still insists the beard suited him. His rise began when his son, Teko, became a friend to Nakarnia, son of the Saint Regent. The Regent's favor brought the Flosherns into the castle's orbit and earned Yago a place as a guard in the Cloak of Quadra Virex. He is grateful, but he knows the appointment rests on borrowed goodwill. He once cheated a card player at a pub and has been looking for the man ever since, partly to repay him and partly because he cannot bear to leave that old debt unresolved. Now a senior guard, Yago is trusted to notice what others miss, while rivals quietly wait for him to overstep.

Role in the story

A capable, perceptive household guard who can become a useful source of access and rumors, or an obstacle if the party threatens the family whose security defines his loyalty.

From their background
Faction
Cloak of Quadra Virex, the Saint Regent's household guard. His allegiance is chiefly to the family whose favor secured his place.

Known connections

Teko Floshern, his son, whose friendship with Nakarnia helped bring the family to the castle. Yago is proud of him and worries that the friendship may become a political liability.
Nakarnia, son of the Saint Regent, who treats Teko as a friend and regards Yago with a mixture of affection and amused respect.
The Saint Regent, whose favor gave the Flosherns security and a place in the castle. Yago's loyalty is personal, not blind.
Graysus May, an itinerant musician and former employer who taught Yago to listen closely. Yago still wonders whether May knew how much he was learning.
The unnamed card player Yago cheated years ago. Yago has searched taverns and road camps for him without success.
