At the table

Voice

A dry, lightly rasped voice with the breath control of someone used to walking and working outdoors. Her consonants are neat from years around court, but her phrasing is homely and direct. Her voice firms and gains a brisk, practical rhythm when events turn dangerous; anger does not make her quieter.

Her voice carries a faint rasp from dry air, smoke, and years of working outdoors, with careful consonants learned from court life. Her pace is measured when relaxed, as if she is checking each thought for safe footing. During an emergency, her words become clipped and workmanlike, shaped by the memory of raids and battlefield stories from her father.

Speech patterns

Begins difficult conversations with a sincere question, often taking an answer at face value.
Uses concrete images from gardening, weather, and mapmaking to explain what she means.
When stressed, drops hedging phrases and gives direct instructions.
Often remembers a person by a small kindness they showed her, even when others remember their rank or reputation.

How to play them

Meet Berrian with plain speech and a little patience. She responds warmly to sincere interest and is quick to offer practical help, but can be manipulated by a plausible story. Earn her trust through consistent actions rather than grand promises. If Gayle or her household is threatened, her open manner gives way to direct questions and decisive protection.

Goal

Keep Gayle safe and help him decide for himself what being chosen as a Qhacret means, while building a life at Quadra Virex that is not merely borrowed from royal favor.

Motivation

Berrian wants to make her family's safety something they can maintain through mutual care, rather than a favor granted by the court.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Berrian is a tall, bony elf whose cautious grace makes even crossing a room look like a test of its ground. Her pale skin has a cool, almost translucent cast, and a permanent web of red veins across the whites of her blue eyes gives her a haunted, sleepless expression. Pale silver-gold hair is pulled into a practical braid, with loose wisps catching at her temples. Her court clothes are modest but finely made, in muted blues and grays, and move softly around her narrow frame. Within a minute, people notice her hands: long-fingered and nicked with tiny, healed pricks from years of plant work and craft, their nails kept short and stained faintly green at the edges. When she smiles, she shows a small, unexpectedly prominent canine tooth, and her jaw shifts slightly to one side as she chews. She leaves the impression of someone gentle who has learned to watch every step.

Clothing

Well-made but unshowy court dresses and long coats in muted blue and gray, practical boots, and a braided cord belt carrying small gardening tools.

Body language

She places each foot carefully, as though feeling for a hidden loose stone. When listening, she tilts her head and keeps her hands folded around one thumb. Under stress, her shoulders settle and her chin lifts; her gaze becomes direct despite its weary, bloodshot appearance.

Personality

17 traits and drives

Berrian is open-hearted enough to trust a stranger's story and cautious enough to check the path beneath her feet. At ease, she is gentle, loyal, and curious, though easily led by a confident speaker. Under pressure, her practical judgment comes forward: she becomes brisk, makes decisions quickly, and will not be talked out of a choice she believes protects someone. She wants to see the best in people, but remembers the cost of surviving when her friends did not.

Alignment
Compassionate and peace-seeking, but pragmatic when someone is in danger; not a formal rules alignment.

Quirks

Tests unfamiliar floors with the side of her boot before fully committing her weight.
Turns seed pods or buttons over in her fingers while listening, then leaves them in orderly little rows.
When asked for directions, draws the route in the air with one finger before describing it.
Keeps tiny, unlabeled paper scraps from memorable places folded into her sewing tin.
Counts the first three steps after waking, a habit left from her weeks in the ruined maze.

Habits

In calm company, asks questions readily and assumes an answer is sincere until evidence forces her to reconsider.
When frightened, checks exits, ground conditions, and the nearest person who needs help before she speaks.
In a crisis, stops apologizing, gives short practical instructions, and commits firmly once she has chosen a course.
After a frightening event, tends plants or repairs a small object until her hands stop trembling.

Combat

HP 42 · 30 feet per round, custom baseline for this NPC

Berrian avoids a stand-up fight. She uses Root Snare to stop pursuit, puts cover or allies between herself and danger, and spends her healing on the person most likely to fall. If forced into close combat, she uses her staff to make space, then retreats. These are custom NPC mechanics.

Custom Generic Fantasy rules. Berrian uses a d20 for uncertain checks. Roll d20 + the relevant attribute modifier; 10 is a routine challenge, 15 difficult, and 20 exceptional. These are campaign-specific rules, not claims about a canonical Generic Fantasy ruleset.
Elf. Custom setting trait. Berrian can see clearly in dim natural light and has keen hearing; this grants no combat bonus unless the GM sets a relevant check.
Druid. Custom setting trait. Berrian knows plant lore, animal behavior, and practical field remedies. Her nature magic is described as custom, not as a canonical spell list.
Battle-tested. When protecting someone nearby, Berrian may use her reaction to impose a -2 penalty on one attack roll against that person. Once used, this protection cannot be used again until she has rested.

Actions

Ashwood Staff. Custom attack: to hit at close range, dealing damage. Berrian would rather use this to drive an attacker back than pursue them.
Root Snare. Custom nature magic: Choose one visible creature within 12 paces. Vines or roots hinder it until the end of its next turn; it must pass a Force check or its speed becomes 0 for that turn. This is a custom effect, not a canonical spell.
Green Mend. Custom nature magic: A creature Berrian touches regains hit points. It can be used twice between full rests. It does not restore a creature from death.

Reactions

Step Between. Custom defense: When an ally within 2 paces is attacked, Berrian may impose a -2 penalty on the attack roll. She must be able to see the attacker and cannot use this reaction if incapacitated.

Background

Berrian was born on a battlefield, though her earliest memories are of her father's mansion and the friends who filled its neglected halls. Her father raised her alone, giving her modest comfort and a mostly happy childhood while rarely explaining the war that shaped his caution. As a girl she became lost for several weeks in a ruined maze. She found her way home by tracking water, moss, and the angle of the sun; afterward she studied local maps obsessively, determined never to depend on luck alone. Later she apprenticed first to Braendyn Hazel, a gentle, aspiring hatter, and then learned practical metalwork from Janna Deane, an obscure weaponsmith. Neither apprenticeship made her a fighter, but both taught her patience with materials and the value of careful hands. A journey with friends toward an elusive marble library in the Fabled Slopes ended in loss before they ever found it. She still carries the names of the friends who did not return, and the memory of raids on her town and a faction skirmish in which friends were killed or injured. She survived both, and still wakes from dreams of hurried footsteps and smoke. At a winter festival she watched a huge dragon puppet pass through the streets, a bright, ridiculous spectacle that remains one of her happiest memories. She once attended a local noble's royal dance held in honor of a deceased noble, and on another journey she obtained an autograph from a notorious crime boss, a keepsake she now regrets accepting. An encounter with a gryphon in an apple orchard coincided with her son Gayle being chosen as a Qhacret, a setting-specific honor whose meaning she does not fully understand. Berrian and her family now reside in Quadra Virex because Gayle is a friend of Nakarnia, the Saint Regent's son. Her current problem is balancing her gratitude for that protection against her fear that the household's friendship has made her family a political target.

Role in the story

A gentle court resident whose practical knowledge, trusting nature, and painful history can draw the party into the politics around Gayle and Nakarnia. She can be a guide and healer, but her hidden connection to a crime boss may complicate the group's plans.

“Her father raised her alone, giving her modest comfort and a mostly happy childhood while rarely explaining the war that shaped his caution.”
From their background

Her father raised her alone in the family mansion and remains her most trusted source of unvarnished counsel.
