Species

Appearance
Mara Vey is a broad-shouldered woman with the weathered strength of someone who has hauled bodies through floodwater and carried children out of burning reed houses. Her skin is warm brown, marked by pale branching scars along her left collarbone, like roots seen beneath winter soil. Her hands are square and heavily callused, yet she moves with startling gentleness around the dead. She stands perfectly still when listening to a ghost, then turns with sudden economical speed when danger appears. The unexpected softness in her appearance is a small, neat mouth that often threatens a smile, even while her gray eyes measure every exit.
“Her voice is low, rough-edged, and deliberate, with the patient cadence of someone speaking across water. She rarely raises it.”

Distinguishing Features
Pale root-shaped scars cross her left collarbone and glow faintly when a nearby spirit lies.
Her left thumb is permanently stained black from weirwood sap.
A small silver bell is sewn beneath her coat and rings only when a dead person nearby has not yet accepted their death.
She has a chipped front tooth that gives her rare smiles a disarming crookedness.
Her shadow sometimes contains the silhouette of a child holding her hand.
Voice
“A contralto worn smooth by rain, grief, and years of giving orders in a whisper”
Clothing
A dark green waxed coat hangs over layered charcoal wool and a sleeveless leather cuirass stitched with pale root patterns. Her boots are wrapped in reed cord for traction. A red thread is sewn inside her left cuff for every person she has failed to save. Around her neck hangs a brass funerary key, blackened by age and polished only on the teeth.
Body Language
Mara keeps her shoulders square and her hands visible, a deliberate habit learned from negotiating with frightened spirits. She tilts her head toward empty corners when ghosts speak. In moments of tenderness, she touches someone's sleeve with two fingers, as if confirming that they are still warm.
