Mikkel
Mikkel
At the table
Voice
His voice has the dry, slightly rough edge of someone used to calling over wind and listening for answers across a forest. Pain makes the consonants snag against his changing teeth. When rattled, his breath catches low in his chest and a rough growl blends into the next word; afterward he looks confused by the sound he made.
Mikkel speaks in clipped, practical phrases shaped by years of calling to a horse and communicating across wind and trees. He pauses to work his sore jaw, and some words catch against his lengthening canines. Most of the time he sounds like a tired young hunter trying to make sense of a bad situation; when distressed, low growling overtones slip into his speech.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach slowly, keep weapons lowered, and offer familiar details rather than demanding his name or memories. Mentioning Yippie, hunting, or the smell of his old cloak may reach him more effectively than invoking family duty. Do not crowd him in bright sunlight. If he snaps, give him room and speak plainly; he is frightened by his own outbursts.
Goal
Survive captivity, recover his sense of self, and find a way back to Heimskr and Yippie before the transformation advances.
Motivation
To hold on to the fragments of his former life while deciding whether the trolls are captors, kin, or both.
Appearance
Mikkel's once familiar face looks subtly misarranged, as if his features are still negotiating where they belong. He stands a little taller than his old 5 feet 10 inches, with a long, tightening frame and shoulders that hitch when his joints ache. His brown hair is darkening toward the color of wet earth, clumped at the ends from the deep woods. His green eyes water and pinch nearly shut in sunlight. The most startling change is his mouth: his canine teeth have lengthened into narrow points, and his jaw works painfully before he speaks or eats. He holds himself with a hunter's wary balance, but every few moments his posture falters as a deep ache passes through him. Unexpectedly, he carries a small bundle of dried meadow flowers tucked into his cloak, carefully kept despite his troll-like surroundings.
Clothing
A weather-beaten ranger cloak still recognizable as his own, now stretched tight across his lengthening shoulders. Beneath it he wears ill-fitting, roughly assembled garments modeled after troll clothing: coarse hides, knotted cords, and layers that smell of damp leaves and smoke. His old boots are split at the seams.
Body language
His gaze keeps measuring exits and cover, but his hands sometimes lose their practiced steadiness when a wave of pain crosses his face. He tests his teeth with his tongue, rubs his jaw, and winces at sunlight. When rattled, his shoulders jerk up and his breath catches in a rough, throaty rumble; if his temper breaks, he steps forward too quickly, then seems startled by his own movement.

Personality
13 traits and drivesBefore he vanished, Mikkel was reserved but witty, preferring a sharp aside to a long explanation. That wit still appears around people who make him feel safe, while fear makes him literal, guarded, and easily overwhelmed. He wants to trust anyone offering help, yet instinctively watches their hands and exits. When calm, he is patient and observant; when hurting, sun-struck, or startled, a new volatile temper can seize him before he understands what he is doing.
- Alignment
- Neutral good, though his confusion and captivity make his choices unpredictable

Combat
AC 13 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Mikkel prefers distance, cover, and escape routes. He uses his longbow if he believes someone is a threat, aiming to drive them back rather than pursue them. Pain, bright sunlight, and sudden loud noises disrupt his focus. If cornered, he lashes out with his bow or knife, then tries to flee. He is not a troll combatant and has no supernatural durability.

Background
Mikkel is Heimskr's fourth son, a reserved young man whose dry wit emerged most readily when he was alone with someone he trusted. He was a skilled archer and rider, and often rode his fjord horse, Yippie, into the woods to track prey and look for signs of trolls. During a private hunt, a harsh spring storm broke over the forest with no warning. Trolls took him in secret while the rain drowned out any cry for help. He retains his ranger cloak and bow, but his body is changing: he is growing taller, his hair is darkening, and his teeth and jaw hurt. The sun makes him wince, and his voice slips into a low growl between words. At the lake, trolls perform a strange ritual in song; Mikkel sometimes finds himself drawn to its rhythm without knowing why. He has not acquired a taste for troll food. He does not ask about the family ring, and when questioned about his identity he cannot summon the name Mikkel. Under pressure he says he is Dovre, a name attached to him by his captors or by his own frightened mind. His connection to Jekt is a dangerous thread in the kidnapping: Jekt knows more about the trolls' movements than Mikkel can presently explain. His family searches, Yippie remains a living link to his old life, and Mikkel's body continues changing while he is held deep in the woods.
Role in the story
A missing heir and endangered captive whose rescue is complicated by a transformation that is still at an early, possibly reversible stage. Mikkel can provide clues about the trolls and Jekt, but first the party must earn his trust and help him reconnect with his own identity.
