Voice

A small, slightly husky voice shaped by cold mornings and calling across busy rooms. His consonants are crisp when reciting something memorized; when excited, he runs out of breath and swallows the ends of words. The name William Hirst comes out with a blunt, careful emphasis, as if he is trying the sound of an adult's full name.

He speaks in short, carefully chosen phrases when adults are present, but runs words together when excited. He sometimes repeats a phrase he has heard from Oswin, testing how it sounds in his own mouth.

Speech patterns

Answers a question with a smaller question when he thinks the answer could get someone in trouble.
Calls Oswin by name rather than using an honorific, especially when he wants to test whether Oswin is listening.
Uses precise words he has overheard from adults, then looks pleased if someone notices.
When frightened, repeats the last safe thing someone told him.

How to play them

Speak to William at his eye level without crowding him. Offer a small, concrete choice rather than demanding a confession. He warms to people who remember details he has shared, but becomes guarded if they use his family as leverage.

Goal

Keep his family together and discover why adults become careful with their words whenever Oswin is mentioned.

Motivation

To be treated as someone worth telling the truth to, and to make sure no smaller child is left alone in danger.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A small, watchful boy with a soot-dark thatch of hair, a narrow chin, and a solemn face that can break into a startlingly broad grin. He walks with his toes turned slightly inward, quickening into a sideways scuttle whenever he thinks someone is watching. His wool coat is too large and its left cuff is polished smooth from being worried between thumb and forefinger. He leaves the impression of a child who is listening to a conversation happening one room away.

Clothing

An oversized brown wool coat with a smooth, rubbed left cuff, a patched linen shirt, short trousers, and boots with soft soles. A length of blue thread is tied around one boot as a private marker.

Body language

His shoulders hunch when adults address him directly, but he becomes suddenly loose and quick when moving through a crowd. He hooks one finger inside his left cuff and rubs the worn fabric when uncertain. When he is trying to look brave, he plants his feet too far apart and lifts his chin a little too high.

Personality

12 traits and drives

William wants to be included in adult affairs but is quick to retreat when attention turns serious. He is mischievous with children and solemn with strangers; when relaxed, he chatters and invents elaborate explanations for ordinary things. When frightened, he becomes practical and watchful rather than tearful, then shakes afterward once he is safe.

Alignment
Neutral Good, still learning what goodness costs

Quirks

Taps doorframes twice with two knuckles before entering, even when the door is already open.
Names stray dogs by the sound their paws make on the ground, but never tells anyone the names.
Turns a piece of bread so its crust points north before eating it.
Counts stair steps under his breath, then deliberately miscounts the last one to see whether anyone corrects him.

Habits

Studies an unfamiliar room from the threshold before choosing where to sit.
Stays close to whoever seems least comfortable, then pretends the choice was accidental.
When adults argue, watches their hands rather than their faces.
If someone offers him food, saves a small portion in his pocket for later.

His mother disappearing while working and nobody telling him where she went.

Combat

AC 10 · HP 2 · 25 ft.

Avoids a fight. He ducks behind furniture, runs for a trusted adult, or throws a small object to interrupt pursuit. If cornered, he cries loudly and tries to make the situation public. His combat statistics are intentionally fragile and should not be treated as those of an adventurer.

Common
A child, not a trained combatant. His statistics are a lightweight 5e-style custom profile, not a claim of an official level-zero ruleset.
Knows the lanes, culverts, and back yards around the Hirst home well enough to find a hiding place quickly.
When frightened, grips the nearest adult's sleeve with surprising strength.

Actions

Desperate Toss. William throws a pebble, wooden spool, or other small object at a creature within 10 feet. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw or take 1 bludgeoning damage. He uses this only to distract or escape.
Slip Through. William darts up to his speed. Until the start of his next turn, opportunity attacks against him have disadvantage if he ends his movement behind cover or among larger creatures.

Reactions

Slip the Grasp. When a creature within 5 feet grabs for him, William twists away and can move up to 5 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. He cannot use this if he is restrained or has nowhere to move.

Services they sell

Can carry a short message to a nearby home or shop when it is safe.
Can point out familiar lanes, back yards, and hiding places in the neighborhood.

Rewards they can give

A child's hand-drawn map of lanes and passages near the river road
A warning about the landlord's agent's questions
A small, sincere act of trust if the party treats him as a person rather than a source of information

Background

William Hirst is the young son of Oswin Hirst's connection, raised in a cramped house near the old river road. His family call him Blackby; strangers sometimes use Black William, usually after noticing his ink-dark hair and the way he watches them. When he was five, a winter flood trapped him in a loft with a frightened neighbor's infant while the adults tried to reach them. William kept the baby warm and quiet by telling it the same nonsense story for hours. Since then, he has been both more protective of small things and less willing to believe that grown-ups will arrive in time. Oswin has visited often enough to become a familiar, complicated presence: William likes his attention, but has begun to suspect that adults speak around him when Oswin is involved. His mother, whose name he keeps out of strangers' mouths, is working double shifts at a riverside bakehouse and is behind on rent. A landlord's agent has begun asking pointed questions about the family's connection to Oswin.

Role in the story

A vulnerable witness to the strain surrounding Oswin Hirst, and a reminder that adult choices reach children long before adults explain them. William can reveal fragments of the household's troubles, but should not be used as a disposable danger or a combat challenge.

“His family call him Blackby; strangers sometimes use Black William, usually after noticing his ink-dark hair and the way he watches them.”
