Mok Gatik
Mok Gatik
At the table
Voice
Mok's voice is dry and slightly rasped from dust and years of calling over wind, with a clipped rhythm learned from giving directions while people and animals keep moving. He places emphasis on distances and landmarks, and his breath catches faintly after long stretches of talking in the heat.
He speaks in short, useful phrases shaped by calling directions over wind and pack noise. He often names a landmark before giving an opinion, as if anchoring words to terrain. When embarrassed, he starts explaining logistics; when angry, his sentences become blunt and concrete rather than loud.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with practical help rather than explanations: offer water, a route, or a warning. Mok is more candid with people who protect the vulnerable and do not press him in front of the raiders. Give him a credible way to help the merchants escape and he will risk revealing what he knows.
Goal
Get the captured merchants out of the raiders' reach, then return to Keshka and tell the truth about why he stayed away.
Motivation
To make his coerced choice mean something by keeping the raiders away from the busiest routes and getting the merchants out alive.
Appearance
Mok looks like someone shaped by long days under hard sun and wind: his tawny-brown skin is dry at the knuckles and finely creased at the corners of his eyes, with a pale band across his forehead where a travel wrap usually sits. His gaze keeps sliding past faces to doorways, windows, and the ground near people's feet. He stands with his weight ready to move, but walks with a careful, almost soundless heel-to-toe step that seems oddly gentle for a route runner. What people do not expect of a young caravan scout is the small, carefully tended patch of blue mountain flowers he keeps pressed between waxed cloth in his shirt.
Clothing
A dust-colored wrap with a high collar, patched trousers, soft-soled boots, and a weathered sling bag. He ties a narrow strip of blue cloth around his wrist to remember which way the wind was blowing when he left home.
Body language
Mok angles himself so he can see the nearest exit without appearing to watch it. When deciding whether to trust someone, he studies their boots and hands before their face. His shoulders loosen around children and pack animals, but he keeps one thumb hooked beneath his travel strap when challenged.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 8 · 30 ft.Mok is a level 0 noncombatant, not a trained adventurer. He avoids a fair fight, uses his crossbow only to buy time, and retreats toward cover or a narrow passage. If someone is trapped, he may take a reckless risk to draw attention away from them. His listed attacks use simple 5e-style conventions as a practical game aid, not a claim that he has a class or special training.

Background
Mok grew up running messages between Keshka Gatik's family and the scattered trading camps of the basin. He was quick with directions and slow to admit when a route frightened him. During his last circuit, a flash flood swept away a pack animal and left Mok trapped with two merchants on a shelf of rock. A raider band found them first. Its leader offered water and a way out, then demanded that Mok guide them through the basin routes in return. Mok agreed, telling himself he could lead them away from the busiest roads. Since then, he has quietly misdirected the raiders whenever he can, but their leader has begun to suspect him. Mok vanished before the circuit returned home, and Keshka is now searching for him. He wants to get the merchants he endangered safely to a settlement before he risks going back to his family.
Role in the story
A missing cousin whose apparent betrayal complicates the search. Mok can reveal the raiders' movements and help the party reach the merchants, but saving him may require earning his trust before Keshka's fears harden into anger.
