Sereth Kaivon
Sereth Kaivon
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, faint rasp from years of dust, travel, and speaking outdoors, with rounded Nokh'Vin consonants that make his name sound deliberate rather than grand. He breathes evenly between phrases, a habit learned from physical discipline and from letting witnesses finish. Under strain, his words become more clipped and practical, not louder.
He speaks in carefully paced clauses, shaped by a childhood spent hearing competing histories and an adult life spent making room for testimony. His vocabulary is plain, but he distinguishes sharply between hearing, believing, and agreeing. When recalling the Exodus, his phrasing becomes more personal and less formal.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer practical help before asking for trust. Give people time to tell their version without interruption, then make the costs of their preferred solution explicit. He responds well to admissions of harm and poorly to claims that good intentions excuse it. If a character is being threatened, he prioritizes their immediate safety over completing a discussion.
Goal
Find a way for communities to preserve fair hearings and restorative justice without making either dependent on his presence or reputation.
Motivation
To make accountability survivable: a process that can admit wrongdoing without demanding that the wounded forgive, or that a community destroy itself to prove its purity.
Appearance
Sereth has the still, attentive bearing of someone who learned to survive by noticing what a room would rather conceal. His skin resembles a deep-blue night sky, crossed by a faint aura like distant blue haze; pinprick flecks brighten briefly along his forearms when he remembers a painful event. Fine pale lines at his wrists and ankles are not scars but weather-polished bands where years of work restraints rubbed his skin smooth. He moves with economical, heel-light steps, turning his whole body toward whoever speaks rather than merely swiveling his head. A surprising detail for a stern prophet and disciplined monk: he keeps a little clay bird tucked into his belt, chipped at the beak and painted with a ridiculous yellow eye.
Clothing
Layered, practical robes in dust-brown and faded indigo, patched at the elbows and hem. A broad sash carries a few carefully wrapped tools. He wears soft footwraps suited to stone and sand, and no visible badge of office.
Body language
He stands with his palms visible and shoulders relaxed, but keeps his feet set as if ready to place himself between a blow and someone else. When listening, he tilts his head slightly and rests one thumb against the worn clay bird at his belt. He does not pace; when troubled, he slowly turns the bird until its chipped beak faces outward.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesSereth is patient with frightened people and exacting with the comfortable. He can listen without flinching to an ugly confession, yet becomes stubborn when someone uses urgency to silence the accused. In private he is wry and fond of childish jokes; in public he is measured, sometimes so careful that others mistake him for cold. He wants people to choose freely, but his conviction that every choice must be examined can feel like another restraint.
- Alignment
- Principled and compassionate, but increasingly distrustful of institutions that claim to act for the common good.

Background
Sereth Kaivon was born into slavery after the destruction of his people's kingdom. Night elders taught him the story of the King of Measure; Mandate overseers gave him a rival account, calling that same past the Failed Crown. He learned early that a law could sound orderly while serving whoever held the whip. His turning came when he witnessed a lawful execution carried out under an ordinance that had been rewritten overnight to make the condemned person's plea inadmissible. Rather than receive a command or vision in flame, he experienced Resonant Silence: a terrible, patient awareness of consequences before action. He began gathering enslaved people not with promises of conquest, but with procedures: every accused person would be heard, punishment must repair what it could, and no leader would stand above consequence. During the Exodus of Restraint, paths opened, food appeared, and guards sometimes looked away. Sereth insisted these were incidental; what mattered was that people built a life in which slavery was no longer necessary. Prosperity made his careful rules unpopular. The community amended them for speed, then for elders, then for leaders. Sereth objected, was accused of obstructing destiny, and was executed publicly under the very law he had helped establish. The execution was lawful, witnessed, and unjust. A small number of survivors hid him through an obscure restorative rite, a custom continuation of the tale rather than a canonical fact of the setting. He returned decades later with his body alive and his former community gone. He now travels between settlements, teaching restraint while trying to discover whether his survival means anything beyond the world's refusal to let his work rest.
Role in the story
A returning prophet whose presence tests whether a community can practice justice without turning him into either a saint or a scapegoat. He can serve as a mediator, a difficult ally, or the center of a conflict over who gets heard.
“Night elders taught him the story of the King of Measure; Mandate overseers gave him a rival account, calling that same past the Failed Crown.”
- Faction
- Formerly a leader of the enslaved remnants during the Exodus of Restraint. Now unaffiliated, though people who preserve his teachings sometimes call themselves his witnesses.
