Appearance
Tomás Arriola is a weathered human sea captain with warm olive skin, a broad nose, sharp dark eyes, and black hair tied at the nape with several deliberate streaks of silver. He stands as though the deck is always moving beneath him, knees loose, weight settled over the balls of his feet, one hand often resting lightly against a mast, rail, or wheel. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice the scent of salt, lamp oil, bitter orange peel, and cedar clinging to his coat. He knows about the cedar and orange, but insists the lamp oil is someone else's problem. His face is clean-shaven except for a narrow grey mustache, and his smile is unexpectedly soft for a man with a reputation for boarding enemy ships in storms. The contradictory impression is striking: everything about him suggests violence held in reserve, yet he handles small objects with the careful delicacy of a jeweler. He moves with the economical balance of a dancer, but when grief or anger catches him unprepared, his left shoulder dips as if bracing against an invisible wave.
“His voice is low, warm, and weathered, with a coastal Spanish cadence and occasional Quechua terms of affection. He speaks clearly in a storm and softly in a crowded room, forcing people to listen rather than overpowering them.”

Distinguishing Features
Faded tattoos on both forearms combine anchors, curling waves, and angular family-script characters.
His coat smells of salt, cedar, lamp oil, and bitter orange peel.
A small silver bead is braided into his hair behind the right ear, a mourning custom from his mother's coastal village.
He keeps his left shoulder slightly lowered when distracted, as if unconsciously leaning into a storm.
His hands are unusually gentle and precise despite their rope-burned knuckles.
Voice
“A deep, steady baritone softened by years of giving orders through rain and wind. When angry, he becomes quieter and more precise. When grieving, he speaks with the careful gentleness of someone handling glass.”
Clothing
He wears a deep crimson naval captain's coat with worn gold trim, open at the chest over a cream linen shirt. Beneath it is a dark haori-inspired jacket patterned with faded blue waves and bearing his family's crest, a white heron above a broken compass. Weathered leather boots reach to mid-calf. A red sash holds both weapons, and a braided cord around his wrist carries three small brass rings taken from ships he failed to save.
Body Language
When waiting, Tomás places most of his weight on his right leg and keeps his left foot angled toward the nearest stable surface. He touches the wheel, a railing, or the pommel of his katana whenever a conversation turns uncertain. He leans toward people when they speak, but never turns his back fully toward an open sea.
